• Audience 8.7 - This is a very strong, clear tape that captures almost too much atmosphere (crowd) and leans towards the upper-mid band frequencies a little much. That being said, I still recommend this one because the sound is good enough to be very responsive to EQ, so if you season it to taste you will end up with a very nice experience. • Soundboard 8.7 - The only flaw with this tape is that it features a typical video compression type sound but the mastering job mitigated a lot of that so that the sound does breathe a bit more. It’s still very good, a little rough maybe but I take it and I am happy with it especially if nothing else because all instruments are present, the bass work is surprisingly defined in this mix…I can actually hear individual notes being played and my goodness Michael Anthony was a boss! • Soundboard 8.8 - A dated sounding board tape, yes it is good but I can see how there are limitations with board tapes just as there are with audience tapes. If I was a fan I would still love this show, I mean, it’s clear and clean and it’s finely performed so there’s no real downside here. • Soundboard 9.1 - I rate this as a soundboard because even though I am not 100% sure, the giveaway is the drums. • Audience 9.5 - A sparkling, vivid recollection of a moment in time when an evening of progressive rock music was being performed by masters of the craft, and it was sublime. • Grand Funk Railroad Hawaii 1971 - Soundboard 9.1 A scarcity of prime era  recordings mandate that anyone remotely interested in this band pursue any and all recordings that are A. Soundboard and/or B. decent audience for the simple reason that this band kicked ass. This is a true rarity – a soundboard and, yes, it kicks major ass. Grand Funk Railroad Boston 1971 Audience 8.7 - A very good tape surfaces and you can actually hear everything pretty clearly. This band played very loud (as did any self-respecting heavy rock band of the early 70’s) and consequently unless you smuggled in superior quality machinery you weren’t likely to be able to capture this sound with any clarity. This taper had better than average gear it seems, and even though it’s still somewhat distant from the stage, it is a tape that allows the listener to experience an entire show without struggling too hard to make out what is going on. • Audience 8.8 - A really good tape with a loud and phat bottom end that is probably not that unlike what the actual sound would have been at the show. • Audience 9.4 - If the house itself sounds great, and your taping with high quality equipment (most likely a small digital unit with a good, dynamic mic and level control), then your result will be something like this. A lot of detail comes through, as does, from time to time, a rowdy audience – that adds to the atmosphere and thankfully never wrecks the audio recording. • Audience 9.3 - A very good tape, with less of the perfect instrumental separation but more of the live power that can be delivered through good house P.A.’s, and as long as taper is not a complete moron and/or using radio shack circa 1985 gear, chances are you’ll end up with a nice recording…as this one is. • Audience 9.1 - Atmospheric, where even if it may be recorded from somewhere in the middle, the immersive experience has been well captured. Vocals sound lush and full, and percussion is crisp and well defined with a nice, rounded bottom end holding it all down. • Audience 8.7 - It’s not necessarily a keeper but it is still a very good sounding tape that has maybe a touch more “atmosphere” than your used to. I could hear everything fine, although it isn’t the best in terms of instrument separation – it’s part and parcel sometimes when listening to audience recordings. I still can recommend this one, because it’s good enough that you won’t abandon it and it will sit nicely in your collection. • Audience 8.6/Pro 9.1 - This recording was not done on great equipment but it’s not a load of crap. The high frequency range is well represented but at times when the horns hit higher notes it gets a little screechy. The atmosphere is a touch bouncy and live, mid and low frequencies are present but not powerful. Overall it’s not bad, but it isn’t going to set the world on fire. • Audience 8.8/Audience 8.7  - Both recordings here (from the same taper) occurred on two different gigs at the same venue in the same year.  Both are consistent, and good. The songs do duplicate but Rory has new material to offer at the second gig later in the year. Great set here!
