Audience 9.5 - Hard to really improve upon this one - it's lovely in all regards. Great, clean highs and round lows with a great mid range. It's highlighted by a respectful crowd that rarely intrudes while the band is performing but very enthusiastic between songs. Wish I was there. This recording allows me to be there and hear what I missed. Audience 8.8 - This is NOT the Monsters of Rock show, it’s actually the last DLR (classic era) show and it’s pretty good! It’s not super close up or terribly far from stage, seems to be in a nice spot and everything is clear with decent dynamics. Now, it’s a recording from a rowdy crowd but even with that I felt they did not ruin this or intrude unnecessarily – in fact it seemed they wanted to listen to the band and not hold conversations or stupid hooting and whistling during songs. Stockholm 1983 Audience 8.9 - This tape starts off kind of average and slowly but surely keeps getting better until what we have is a very good tape of a really good show. As most already know, any good tape of this line up is VERY welcome as it showcases what I consider a great band – I did not say a great Black Sabbath because you can’t get away from Ian’s obvious vocal inflections that inevitably recall his old band. That being said if you listen to this without that bias you realize how good this BAND was in 1983. Paris 1983 Soundboard 9.1 - A most welcomed thing amongst Black Sabbath collectors without question is this board tape with the Ian Gillan line up. I love the material they recorded on Born Again, this is almost the logical progression from Technical Ecstasy, to me anyway. The music is more ideally suited to Ian Gillan’s vocals than it would have been to Ronnie James Dio and I think that is obvious. Black Sabbath Quebec City 1983 Audience 8.9 - I like this tape because you really get to hear and appreciate what the bass is all about in Sabbath and it is here in excellent detail. Everyone shines, it’s great to have this abundance of riches because this short-lived period of Black Sabbath is certainly one of the most unique sounding. Soundboard 9.2 - I think this right here is as good as it will get to a complete Tommy Bolin Purple gig in soundboard quality and, here’s the important thing, reasonably cohesive playing. To be honest, after listening to this, it’s kind of apparent that Deep Purple was probably not the best vehicle for Tommy’s talents. Not that he can’t play, but that Deep Purple’s music was too one dimensional. That being said it is still pretty good despite the erratic mix – sometimes guitar is up front and sometimes it is buried. I need atmosphere, I want to feel the space around me, the venue itself is a part of the event. Audience tapes of high quality can sometimes deliver more atmosphere than the best soundboard, and sometimes it’s necessary if you want to relive an event to have that atmosphere included in the recording. Disc 1 Denver 1976 Soundboard 9.5 - A very bright and clear board tape with emphasis in the mix for maximum vocal clarity, but I like the way the drums sound and the horns are very clear too. Overall this is a “funk” mix. My only criticism might be the sizzle of the cymbals but they aren’t crowding the mix which might have been a deal-breaker for me. This is good funked up stuff! Disc 2 Oakland 1977 Soundboard/open mic audience 9.3 - I have to say my ears do not lie and there definitely is a professional quality to this recording but I could swear they have ambient mic’s to add atmosphere or perhaps to fill gaps? When the music is playing it’s most def soundboard, that is all I know. Audience 8.9 - Two different evenings in Boston, each three years apart. For one thing, it's a well balanced capture all the way around (both gigs). Hearing the differences between stadium acts performing in '74 and then in '77 reveals subtle changes in music and delivery. I like being able to notice things like that and sets like this really allow the listener to immerse themselves in their own analytics as they listen. The sound is very good especially because a well done remastering job refreshed the tapes. I love this, this is a treat for people who wished they got to hear the opening acts too but tapers seldom saved tape for them. Audience 8.8 - Another amazing historical document that gives us the entire picture of what it was like to attend a rock concert in Boston in the early 70's. It's one evening out of 365 other evenings in the calendar year but it is a year that I did not get to experience anything like this, being that I was still in elementary school. It's a glaring example of what I was missing! Taper was not only prescient in capturing all the acts but he manages to do so with minimal problems and in very decent quality. Original tape transfers received recent treatment and have never sounded better, it makes me wonder why this material never got picked up by any of the boot labels in Japan or Europe for production. Disc 1 Pittsburgh 1974 Audience 8.5 A rather middle of the road tape that does not offend the ears, but does not offer great separation of instruments. It’s not that it is real muddy either, it’s just that Sabbath were very loud, and unless you were seated ideally for taping, and, if your taping gear was high quality, you “might” get a very good recording of this band. That being said, I have heard much worse, and this is a new tape to circulation. Some good jams, Ozzy is very excited this night. Disc 2 Niagara Falls 1978 Audience 8.7 A bit better than the previous disc in this set, it offers better separation of instruments and more dynamics. In parts, it’s actually even better than the 8.7 rating. A rare tape, it offers something to collectors and features complete versions of the Technical Ecstasy songs which is a big plus. Disc 3 Live Rehearsals and Unknown Live 1979-80 Soundboard 9.8 Two very cool pieces that may have fallen through the cracks for most collectors but thankfully included in this Lost Recordings set. Both are worth repeated listening. Audience 8.4 - Buried in a closet for decades this important document has finally surfaced. It’s, to my ears, slightly better than the next oldest live document which I believe is the Music Machine gig. The tape itself is not as bad as you’d imagine and that could be due to the diligent re-mastering that was done. The sound is not as murky and indecipherable as a lot of the other 1980 tapes. This can be appreciated, I mean, this is May of 1980 the band had yet to break open and even though they had a hardcore following, was not known outside of UK in any substantive sense. If you were a fan of Iron Maiden in these times, it’s akin to investing money in Google stock when it was first offered. Why would you? …maybe because you liked what they were doing and had a hunch. Various Sources 8.5/10 - So this is, as the title suggests, a collection of recordings made during this tour but the kicker is that the songs are all ones that were one-off’s (with a couple of exceptions). I found that even the worst track (the final track in the set) was not as bad as they made it seem in the liner notes. Still, when compared to some of the truly outstanding ones in the set, yes maybe it really paled in comparison but there’s only two “marginal” tracks here and they aren’t totally abhorrent. This was a very interesting listen for me personally. It’s extremely insistent and powerful sounding with guitars really up front and vocals thankfully pretty nicely mixed in as well. Audience 9.2 - I love how this sounds! Geddy is so clear, the sound is very comfortable to my ears and I just love how the drums and bass are distinct – especially the bass because my gosh Geddy is such a badass and so on point here. This is kind of a historic gig in as way most would not even notice. 30 years prior to this date was the last time Rush played the Allentown Fair, and they played a few songs not yet released…welp, fast forward 30 years and they do the same thing here! How cool is that? One other personal detail that struck me was how the performance took me back to around 1979, I felt the performance and atmosphere, along with how the tape itself was recorded, all for some reason made me, at times, think this sounded like the late 70's. I have been collecting every known Toronto show by Rush and this fills a nice place in the 70’s portion…and wow man I gotta say the quality is surprising since most of the other 70’s tapes are really not that great. I am not saying this is sparkling minty fresh, but it’s much more clear and present than the others and that is good for us because this is the earliest known AFTK performance and features tracks yet to be released. Audience 8.8 - A very clean, clear tape which to my ears only needs one thing – more “fatness” – but I found myself getting used to the more midrangey sound as I listened and then I realized it’s a very good recording that requires you to stick with it until it kind of normalizes. I mean, there’s bass here, and it’s actually somewhat detailed…that is what this tape offers more than anything is that each instrument is pretty distinct in this mix. The set features outstanding quality audience recordings made between 1972 and 1975 at the Seattle Coliseum. The quality encompasses not just the audio fidelity but the completeness and smoothness. All in all this is surely one of the best collections of live Elton John I've ever heard. The price has risen slightly to accommodate the upgrades that have been applied to not only this but the entire line of canisters. I think you will totally be blown away when you see the difference, and the previous ones were pretty impressive so this is going to really be something special.
