Audience 8.8 - Very exciting club shows recorded in a way that makes you wonder if the band themselves did not have it done. It is very clear, the only knock I give it is maybe the passage of time took away some of the brilliance, and/or it’s not a first gen tape…but it’s really good! Chicago 1979 Soundboard 8.8 - A little bit on the “ragged” side mix-wise, with strong kick drums and guitar, vocals next. Sound quality is decent due to it being a soundboard but some instruments are placed well behind such as keyboards. It is a high energy sound, a real sonic blast to be sure. Denver 1979 Soundboard 9.3 - A refreshing and bright board tape, mixed well and everything is heard pretty clearly. Keyboards still mixed lower down the chain of command but now I think I understand this idea – while the band is playing it’s simply keyboard accompaniment, and when it’s keyboards time, he’s brought up louder. Works for me. Long Island 1979 Audience 8.7 - A pretty decent tape for this hall, the bass sounds very nice, full and round, guitars are a little back, vocals are present and up front more or less. So, all in all unless you have to have Ritchie blasting full on into your eardrums, which he is during his solo bits, this one will sit nicely in the collection and I even think it will find a repeated listen or two. Pro Broadcast 9.3 - A long improvisational track which really is, in my opinion, way ahead of everyone else in terms of trying new things and being completely off the cuff with sounds and textures. It’s not like traditional space rock, in fact it is not even rock, although the band are players and can make noise when they want to make noise. The fidelity is solid, I can hear everything very clearly and ambience is abundant. Audience 8.2 - Well, it isn’t a recording that will win any grammies but damn if it isn’t RAW just like the band and their music. This recording actually suits this band – it’s a little rough, but it’s brutal and in your face. The vocals fight for bandwidth against angry and loud guitars, driving bass, and furious non-stop drums. It’s actually kind of a fun listen despite its limitations. Oh, and some good news – it is not a muddy mess at all, it’s just a loud band in a small club sounding for all the world like the debut of punk rock. Audience 8.8 - Surprisingly good and clear! I get fine separation of instruments as well, hearing back up vocals, all guitars and drums in a good position and bass is there, not super defined and not boomy but there. Well done taper! Radio Broadcast 9.3 - Some tape hiss but otherwise a beautiful full sounding set here. This music is glorious, it’s maybe not everyone’s cup of tea but it’s very heartfelt and genuine, delicate, contemplative, uplifting. Highly recommended! Audience 8.8 - This may not be a tape with good song separation or detail but it occupies a sonic range that is very comfortable on the ears. Usually when attending a very loud, bombastic heavy rock or metal concert you aren’t going to distinguish much anyway, you will basically hear a roaring sound…but this tape delivers a little more than just that. This is a good document and taper used good gear, sat in a good spot, and recorded everything. I would call this recording completely immersive, with a warm, inviting sound. Pro TV Studio 8.7 - A good live recording with atmosphere, it sounds slightly dated but has the ability to transport you to the time and place…I think that when a recording can do that, it overcomes some of the limitations that may be present. Soundboard 9.3 - This is, for me, a real revelation. I never knew anything of this band outside of their lone smash hit “My Sharona”, which incidentally happens to hearken me back to a very specific time and place of my youth when this song blasted from every radio every 10 minutes. Listening to this show, I am stunned at how excellent the band is, and how good ALL of the songs are. How they remained pigeonholed and forgotten as another 1 hit wonder it just amazes me because they should have been more than that. Audience 8.3 - Limitations with the microphone is probably what prevents this recording from blossoming as it sometimes seems like it wants to do. You can hear it, for instance, during some of the passages, but I think the overloading of the bass crowds out the guitar a bit too much (although you can hear guitar, just not in a clear and detailed manner). Drums and keyboards dominate with a very insistent, pulsing bass undercurrent throughout. Does that count this out? Not at all, due to the disparity of live BJH recordings, I think this one is worth exploring. The compositions and playing make up for the limitations on the tape. Audience 8.4 - Not a high fidelity recording, sounding almost like an AM radio broadcast, but it gets a good sound review because it’s got clear guitar and bass (some tape hiss) and vocals are very clear. When a new tape pops up from such an early vintage you always immediately suspect it will be muddy crap so it’s a pleasant surprise to hear that it is decent. I like this show too, it’s a regular tour stop but the band is out to prove a point – and that point is that Led Zeppelin is not the only great English heavy rock band touring the States.
