Audience 8.8 - This old tape is fascinating, and frustrating. The “DJ” is a guy who seems to work for a local radio station who somehow got to broadcast this show – but my spidey sense says it’s not actually what went down. This is a ruse to get the tape machine into the venue, I am willing to bet money on it. So, he’s in the venue but to keep up appearances he does station ID’s periodically (almost every song) and because of his cheap recorder, the station id he does just sounds like a loud sonic swoosh (thankfully they are real short). Zep are in good form but fight constantly against poor PA which makes for a very interesting evening and a unique tape. One thing I want to point out is that because of the weird PA problems, it seems Page is getting much more feedback than normal and it causes him to sound much more psychedelic and I actually enjoyed that very much. Audience 8.7 - This is a really nice and rare treat. I have been collecting every known Toronto show by Rush and this fills a nice place in the 70’s portion…and wow man I gotta say the quality is surprising since most of the other 70’s tapes are really not that great. I am not saying this is sparkling minty fresh, but it’s much more clear and present than the others and that is good for us because this is the earliest known AFTK performance and features tracks yet to be released. Audience 9.2 - I love how this sounds! Geddy is so clear, the sound is very comfortable to my ears and I just love how the drums and bass are distinct – especially the bass because my gosh Geddy is such a badass and so on point here. This is kind of a historic gig in as way most would not even notice. 30 years prior to this date was the last time Rush played the Allentown Fair, and they played a few songs not yet released…welp, fast forward 30 years and they do the same thing here! How cool is that? One other personal detail that struck me was how the performance took me back to around 1979, I felt the performance and atmosphere, along with how the tape itself was recorded, all for some reason made me, at times, think this sounded like the late 70's. Pro 9.9 - this is unbelievably solid. Everything is in the pocket, which is awfully hard to do with a metal band. Every instrument, and the crowd mixed in to provide atmosphere. This had to be a broadcast, but it’s not from a broadcast it has to be a pre-broadcast master. I mean, it’s almost perfect. Audience 8.6 - This very decent old tape, previously ignored by collectors, takes a minute or two to get going so don’t be disappointed just hang in there. Once it settles in, it’s a very good tape that suffers maybe from some tape noise but really what I am going to tell you is that I would listen to this again because the performance here is among the very best, most ferocious I have honestly ever heard and I have heard MANY Rush recordings. Audience 8.7 - A rattling, rambunctious recording that you will LOVE because it’s the sonic equivalent of the Stones’ personalities. Sure, yeah, this recording is imperfect but it does NOT suffer from muddiness, rather the opposite, it’s very “sharp” and sometimes cymbal crashes irritate (not always), and yet I listened all the way through and had a great time with this show. The quality is not really an issue. This is a just a classic Stones gig and the fact we have the opening acts, man, that is amazing! Audience 9.1 - A very bright and energetic recording that does NOT suffer at all from anything getting in between the band and the microphone because there’s nothing between the band and the recorder it seems. This is direct from PA to your ears…and it’s great! Audience 9.2 - Someone did a really good job handling this stealth recording because it’s quite good and has enough atmosphere to allow you to imagine being there. I like “time capsule” recordings like this. The band sounds inspired on this evening. Audience 8.8 - Very clear and leaning towards the mid and upper frequency bands but not in any kind of detrimental way. Supposedly the original source used is a very rare Japanese bootleg LP and that, with a little work done, presents a fine document we can all enjoy. The Reseda 87 material is soundboard with Mick Jagger fronting, and even though the original source features much more material, that is not technically the “live” gig but rather some studio rehearsals which are not present here. Pro 9.7 - One has to wonder with all the various BBC recordings in the Bowie catalog, what do I get from having one more? Audience 8.5-8.7 - So why the dual rating? Because it is the limitation of the recording equipment that prevents this from earning the solid 8,7 which is a great rating for a long forgotten Ziggy show. So my take on this is that during loud sections, the guitar takes a back seat in the mix while Ziggy is very prominent – which is kind of cool – but during mellower songs (of which there are a few) the mix is much better all around. All in all, this is a pretty good old tape and I don’t think it will disappoint you. Radio Broadcast 8.7 - This is one of the toughest tapes to review because I don’t know what it is, literally I don’t know how they captured this to tape. To my ears it sounds like it was broadcast over the air and someone placed a microphone in front of their stereo speaker and recorded it. Either that or maybe it was broadcast over AM, I just can’t tell you but for sure it’s not as good as a radio broadcast should be, not is it as bad as an amateur audience recording, this one hovers somewhere in between but I still thought it was decent. Someone definitely re-mastered this, and I am 100% sure it was a major benefit. Audience 8.7 - This is a fun recording to listen to, sure it’s a bit ramshackle being as if you’ve been tossed into the mosh pit (in 1973 I guess the entire venue resembled a mosh pit full of people too stoned to mosh!), but it’s actually not bad. I imagine by this time the band must realize that glitter and costumes aren’t enough to carry the show when your competition is Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, and other bands of that stature. Even if Bowie had anticipated all that by the time of this performance (undoubtedly he did), still the Ziggy Stardust premise seemed to be working well with the audiences as this tape can attest. Audience 8.8 - A reasonably clear and even somewhat dynamic old tape, that sounds to me like someone did some work on it and thankfully so. I personally think this is incredibly progressive music, and of course they sound great especially here in front of a London audience.
