Audience 8.5 - Maybe a little low end muddiness with a real strong bass presence but I don’t think it kills this recording at all. If the guitars and vocals did not come through I would have said otherwise. The playing is exceptional; this recording should be enjoyed by all. -

Audience 8.8 - This is a strange recording because at first it may seem as though it is a board tape because there’s virtually no audience noise at all. Closer examination reveals that it is more likely an open mic placed right up on the stage or close to the mains. It is a little hot, meaning the levels are near max, but thankfully it only comes to the bleeding edge and does not fall off the cliff. A pretty darn exciting tape! -
Audience 7.8 - Tape is a little over saturated but all the music comes through and well separated so that you get every piano key, every guitar note, every bass note, etc. and it’s great. -

Audience 8.4 - The same taping crew that did the Ozzy Osbourne, and it sounds very similar but maybe a touch clearer. It’s a pretty good effort, especially when you consider the year, and what I mean is that the tape recording equipment used during most of the 80’s did not usually produce anything to write home about. Brand New - Def Leppard played a "Slang tour" show in Johannesburg, South Africa on 5th December 1996. 13 songs from the show were recorded for broadcast. The band played in front of 37,500 ecstatic and very loud fans. This was the first of three stadium shows played on the mini tour of the country. -

Audience 5.7 - Muffled and bass heavy but blistering show wish it was better sound. Vocals kind of clear, can hear guitar and he’s shredding like hell. -
Audience 7.9 - It’s hard give this a below 8 rating because of technical limitations of the recorder (a touch of high end distortion) because it is a very exciting and highly amped show captured quite well for the primitive hear that must have been used. I can hear everything and guitar is loud and up front. The distortion present is not a killer, it’s there but it is as unobtrusive as distortion can be. A fun recording, puts you right there. -
Audience 6.8 - Audio is Not very good but man, what a bummer because this is one of the absolute best performances I think I have ever heard. Totally intense and really good improv jams that do not bore you to tears. Wish it was better – but on the plus side you get a rather clear Richie on guitar. Quieter passages are rather decent. The main problem here is that everything is squeezed into a narrow bandwidth. Must have for hardcore fans for the ferociousness of the performance. -
Soundboard 9.2 - I think this right here is as good as it will get to a complete Tommy Bolin Purple gig in soundboard quality and, here’s the important thing, reasonably cohesive playing. To be honest, after listening to this, it’s kind of apparent that Deep Purple was probably not the best vehicle for Tommy’s talents. Not that he can’t play, but that Deep Purple’s music was too one dimensional. That being said it is still pretty good despite the erratic mix – sometimes guitar is up front and sometimes it is buried. Soundboard 9.5 - So I haven’t kept up with this band since Steve Morse joined. I’ve always loved them, but they just fell off my radar. It was with great pleasure that I reacquainted myself with them as I reviewed this show. It’s multi-layered, multi-dimensional music with some resemblance to the old band if Ritchie traded places with his Southern fried twin brother! I mean, it works, don’t get me wrong – but it can fool you because it’s not Ritchie’s band by any stretch. I like this one maybe a little better to be honest. This is a “deeper” Deep Purple actually, and the orchestra behind them makes it that much more interesting, if sometimes a little bit “cabaret” but it still rocks when it has to and the guitar work by Morse is impeccable.
