Audience 8.4 - A smooth recording, pretty stable, but does lack some punch therefore it is recommended to “season to taste”, but thankfully the pallet is there to lay on your coloring. Some minor tape hiss pervades but is kind of background, my hunch is that this tape went through some mastering process to add boost and it helps a lot. It’s a good tape and a great show! Audience 9.0 - An interesting recording, it’s not a board as far as I can tell, but the vocals are panned over to one side (and they sound like they are right next to you, literally!) but the rest of the music is not hard panned. FM Broadcast 9.3 and Audience 7.8 - The FM tape is very good but the Tokyo show is suffering from what seems to be too low recording levels meaning once you turn the volume up the tape hiss comes along with it. When you do turn it up, you at least hear the band playing and pretty much get a good idea of everything but there is some hiss to deal with. Audience 9.1 - This recording is very very clean, and there is a ton of headroom where literally you can turn the volume all the way up and still get a very clean sound. There almost needs to be more mid punch, and at times, probably in sections that have been patched with a different source, there is a noticeable increase in volume/mid band. Audience 9.6 - Hallelujah! This is just sublime, you get not only a band that sounds completely in lock step with each other (and I mean where even the improvs sound fluid and effortless), but also Frank being on top of his game. His tone, his attack, his feedback, his sound on the tape it’s just a really exceptional capture and performance to elevate this tape to MUST HAVE status. The 88 tour had its share of sleepers, but this is not one of those, by all standards this has to be considered one of the best nights. Audience 8.5 - Despite being a clean recording (probably from a master), this is captured from possibly middle of venue meaning it does sound a little distant (vocals are the giveaway). At times, it sounds like the tapers try to adjust their position and the sound gets fuller, although the music is still kind of blended together and you don’t get distinct guitar notes, even though you get the overall impact of guitar – now solos are a different thing, because those seem to soar above it all and are actually much clearer and more present in the mix. Audience 8.6 - A lively and loud tape, with great atmosphere, in that you get the hall acoustics without unnecessary boominess or echo, just the right amount to give you that sense of being there. That makes for a unique listening experience because this show does not sound like the next show or the one before, the playing and arrangements are going to be different but so is the venue and acoustics. As long as the recording is good, and this one is pretty darn good, you will enjoy the show. Audience 8.4 - The Roundhouse in London was not the ideal place to make a stealth recording, and this one barely wins the struggle between room and distance to present a surprising, clear picture of a very early Dire Straits show. Songs “Me And My Friends” and “Real Girl” would be dropped from the set soon after this show, so having a tape like this should be considered important to the collector. Studio Quality 8.8 - Some tape hiss present, but the quality is there, makes for an interesting listen to hear a pre-final production version of these songs. When the gloss is removed it sounds like it could have been recorded in the mid ‘70’s. Audience 9.4 - This to me is what keeps me in the game. When I thought I had every 79 show (my favorite period) and this comes along…and….it…smokes…everything! Maybe not a perfect score in the audio dept. which by the way it is excellent (a little pegging of the meters when the band is in full on rage but it’s minor, a minor issue) but it delivers in just about every possible way. Frank’s playing is off the charts and his tone is evil. He sounds relaxed, and satisfied – all is going well. Maybe he forgot about this gig a day or two later, but I can’t get the CD out of my player (and not because it is stuck!). This just rules. Period. Audience 9.0 - I like the sound of this recording, it’s got a very nice and smooth bass which is pretty articulate, and the instruments in general are in perfect harmony with each other, you would be hard pressed to get a better mix even through the board. Soundboard 8.8 - The mix gets a little cluttered up at times, guitars being rather hot in this mix but I guess that is what you would prefer.
