Audience 9.4 - This recording consists of a matrix between both an audience recorded tape and a stand-alone video recorder audio, and together (when both are rolling and in-sync) they have a wonderful stereo pan effect and sweet, clean quality. Illinois 2002 - Audience 9.5 - Superb recording considering how hard it is to properly capture live heavy metal. Normally what you get, even if on good gear, is a well captured loud sound without much separation of instruments...but here you can really wrap your ears around it all pretty distinctly. Columbus 1990 - Audience 9.0 - This is a good recording with a little less fullness and bottom end definition compared to the Illinois set. Still, it's really well done and can benefit from your own "seasoning" so to speak. TROUBLE Penny Road Pub South Barrington, Illinois 2002-05-18 DISC 1 1. Introduction - R.I.P. 2. Montreal - Audience 8.7 - You can tell the tapers gear was of good quality, the capture is actually very clear but in capturing the actual sound at the show you gotta accept whatever is coming out of the PA system, and however the sound guy has mixed it. That being said, I can tolerate this one much more than 90% of all the other Metallica audience tapes which suffer greatly from sheer volume overload most of the time. Missouri - Soundboard 9.1 - Great drums sound believe it or not, and both guitars are distinguishable from one another which makes it very well worth hearing. These two guys can really play, maybe not quite Dave Mustaine level (ok so I am partial to Megadeth) but they can do what they do in very convincing fashion especially when you can actually hear it. Audience 8.8 - This is better than I give it credit for, mainly because it has all the elements needed to be very enjoyable - namely: clarity, separation of instruments, and atmosphere. Where it lacks the necessary qualifications to enter into 9.0 and above rating status is more in the dynamics range (is low end low, is high end high, are mids clear and punchy?) which here are expressed mostly with the lovely, brassy and defined bass sound. This is good! But perhaps we are spoiled now with all the audio riches we have at our disposal. This is a very good old tape, with a re-mastering I assume it would rise to the 9.0 level, but the bones are here. E.L.P Odeon Theatre Birmingham, UK 1972-11-24 Disc 1 01. ABADDONS BOLERO 02. Audience 8.7 - A large sound, complete with the bassy, big stadium boominess that telegraphs the volume and power of live Dio. Does that mean it is a muddy mess? No, it's not bad...it's just that your ears will hear this recording probably exactly how they would have heard it at the show. It's a well known fact that the sound at these big shows is one thing to your ear while there in the audience and another thing if you are listening to it over a radio broadcast. This is the sound coming from the P.A. - big, ballsy, LOUD, metal, and atmospheric, immersive, live. It's worth getting this, it has something to offer the listener. Audience 8.8 - This is a very good audience tape. It is very clear, with great separation of instruments. It is not terribly dynamic though, but it's also not sluggish there either - it sort of sits in the midrange of things but in a way that is not too bad on the ears. I enjoyed this performance, I liked the atmosphere of the gig, and the respectful audience. New York - Audience 8.8 - This is a good tape for the vintage, even if the tapers are sometimes talkative they are at least not shouters and nor are those around them. San Bernadino - Audience 9.2 - A surprisingly clear tape, you can tell right away it is a master tape source. The quality of this capture is appreciated very much, it really gives one a sense of what was beginning to happen in the States for Yes. I sometimes just can't believe there was a time when this kind of adventurous, demanding music was so well received and consumed by the American public. Newcastle Audience 8.7 - A fairly bombastic recording that insists you pay attention to it. Thundering, massive, and thankfully listenable. It's not winning any awards for clarity, but it makes up for a lot of that with a representative recording of what you probably heard from the front row at this show. That leads me to say that while you would think there should be distortion, you can't really tell, but yes there just a bit of saturation deep in the bowels somewhere but I don't find it disturbing because it's low enough that you don't focus too much there. London Audience 8.6 - Dropping down one notch here, but there actually might be more mid-upper mid clarity with this recording. I think overall, this recording is a little less forceful, and there is no distortion at all on this. My ears rate this slightly below the Newcastle not because it is inferior quality, but because it is not quite as ballsy, and the trade-off is you have to give up a but of the balls in order to achieve more clarity, but sometimes ballsy is not a bad thing if it isn't too muddy. Audience 8.8 - Very clear, and pretty bright, and that means the tape sacrifices the bottom end in favor of getting the clarity and separation of instruments - that might be considered the trade-off here. I would prefer more bass, but this is something one can add themselves, that is why I highly rate this recording. I think because it is so clear you can really season it to taste more so than if you had a cluttered, or muddy recording. Black Sabbath The Spectrum Philadelphia, PA 1981-12-04 Disc 1 101. E5150 102. Audience 9.3 - I love this recording, probably a lot more than a soundboard. This is the one your ears have been waiting for. Good separation between bass and guitar so that each is distinct, plenty of bottom end but it isn't at the expense of anything else in the mix - it's perfect. I love the bass definition too, and Ian sounds good. Sometimes I think this may be pro, but for the drums which, while excellent, have the slightest touch of sizzle on the cymbals (and by extension you get a touch of it every now and then on vocals) but it's minor and it probably would not be present on a pro recording. This is really just quibbling, trying to find flaws, the recording is BADASS! Black Sabbath Quebec City Coliseum Quebec, Canada 1983-10-20 Disc 1 101. Supertzar 102. Children Of The Grave 103. Audience 8.8 - A recording where the audience does get some attention but not in an obnoxious way, just in an enthusiastic way which sometimes adds to the excitement...but for some it might be a distraction. I didn't mind it, there really wasn't a particular audience member who yelled stupidly right into the mic. Thankfully the band is pretty reasonably clear, most of the time. Audience 8.6 - Starts off a bit dodgy but gets better. Vocals are up front in the mix but still "round" and by that I mean not clearly defined to where you can make out the words. Drums are probably the clearest instrument in this recording and they propel the music forward with gusto. Guitars are raucous and as dirty as you want them, and the overall recording is a bit dirty too coming from the crowd where you get a great sense of being there with them. This is a recording that is worth sticking with because by the third or fourth song in you can really start to appreciate it because it does seem as though everything gets just a little bit clearer and more distinct (you can really tell during Over The Top). Audience 9.2 - Crisp, and a little brassy, but exceptionally "live", the music MOVES in and through, a great tape! I felt the 70's vibes all over the place. SDBRD 9.5 - both of these gigs are spectacular, for me they represent an all too brief high water mark for the band where things are unbelievably tight and incomprehensibly cosmic. If more people knew of this music's existence, this band's old catalog would go platinum today. GONG Europe 1975 Disc 1 La Celle St. Cloud Festival France June 8, 1975 1. Master Builder 10:18 2. RCMH - Audience 8.9 - A nice atmosphere, even though it is a large hall there is a charming warmth here. Natalie's vocals carry very well, she is prominent in the mix. There is some background audience chatter occasionally that adds an element of immediacy without being a distraction. I don't usually condone chatter near the taper but the taper has done a great job with this "immersive" situation and I rather like it. Pier 84 - Audience 9.1/SDBRD 9.3 - Very similar to the RCMH show but more clarity in the high end, and slightly better separation of instruments. This is a VERY good recording that will provide many enjoyable moments for the listener. Then after the 1st song it switches to soundboard source (radio broadcast I believe) and it is good, solid, punchy, but not quite as atmospheric as the previous source which was really quite good too. 10,000 Maniacs New York Maniacs 88-89 Disc 1 Radio City Music Hall New York City, NY. 06-29-1989 1. Audience 9.4 - A smooth and comfortable sound, obviously taper running great mics and in a relatively decent position. The mix favors vocals and there's a great kick drum presence that propels the music. Guitars seem to hover overhead, not bombastic but rather more subdued but not absent by any means. Audience members are occasionally heard nearby, and that reminds you that you are hearing a stealth recording albeit one done with semi-pro gear. Audience 8.8 - A show new to circulation, it presents a severely under represented period of the band. Not too many tapes have surfaced (and no known videos) so whatever we can get, we appreciate. Here, taper did an admiral job even though he's clearly immersed in a boisterous audience. There is plenty of audience present, but thankfully what you get most of is a relatively clear and atmospheric ELO on a great night. There is a touch of overcrowding within the mid-range frequency, but nothing that distorts so there's zero muddiness and maybe less low end that you might prefer. Overall I have to say it fits nicely into my ELO collection right next to the one or two other 1981 shows (like I said, few and far between).Electric Light Orchestra Civic Center Hartford, Connecticut Time Tour 1981Disc 11. Audience 8.9 - what a show! Yes, you will get knocked around down in the pit with the fans, yes you will hear the sounds of incredibly excited fans, and yes, the will feel absolutely like you are right there. The thing is, when you realize someone went through a bit of trouble to do this it just makes such a difference as you listen and understand this is a live, frenzied atmosphere with a very loud rock and roll band right in front of you. Taper, my hat is tipped toward you my friend. Broadcast 9.3 - A little tiny bit of "old" tape syndrome is present at times, but because this is a well recorded show you hardly notice. There's an odd "click" present during quiet parts but that also disappears when the music is playing.
