New York 1973 SDBRD 9.2 - Excellent professionally recorded show. It’s easy to hear how it was that his star took off and exploded just a few short years later. New Orleans 1973 Audience 8.8 - A strong, clear, atmospheric recording (easy to put yourself in the taper’s seats). I always thought some bands sound better if they aren’t captured through the board…Frampton has such good stage presence and there’s always such a good audience report…audience tapes of excellent quality are the best listening experience imho. Metropolitan Opera House NY 1970 Audience 8.4 - A decent tape considering we have very few US 1970 tour audience tapes that sound great. A little sweetening with EQ and you’ve just raised the sound rating another half a point…technology has changed the way collectors think about these old audience source tapes. Newcastle 1971 Audience 8.7 - A surprising new find! Buried for decades and now dusted off, restored and presented for your approval. It’s not bad! I can hear it all, with some cool atmosphere. I rather like it! San Francisco 1971 Audience 8.8 - This tape has some depth to it, where you get definition in the bass and not just “low end” which I appreciate. Roger rises above in the sound mix but on this tape nobody is drowned out, it’s evenly mixed and that makes it enjoyable. Some background noise which sounds like it is coming from the house PA but not during the band performing…all in all this is a real good one. Audience 8.8 - Well here it is folks, the BEST early vintage ZZ Top recording to ever surface. We already gave up a long time ago that the band would dig into their archives for us, but now it’s been completely left up to the fans to provide the early documents…and for better or worse they have (mostly worse). After all this time a tape has surfaced that presents a powerful early testament to the rocking blues power of ZZ Top before they “made it” to the FM bigtime. The hits were already in the repertoire, but only hinting at the massive success to come. This is the REAL DEAL – a clear, loud, balsy tape from very early in the bands career. Audience 8.8 - Man, why do we have to wait over 35 years for a new Rush tape to surface? Come on guys! Let’s get them out before we’re all dead! Ha ha! So, this is just fantastic! For one thing, it’s early Rush, just prior to the start of 2112, and there’s just not a lot out there that is listenable. This is listenable, and it ain’t perfect but it is perfect at the same time – how to explain that seemingly contradictory statement? Collectors will understand me…it lacks some of the niceties we’ve grown accustomed to nowadays but it also delivers things we do not frequently hear on Rush audience tapes and that is a very defined, well rounded and clearly heard bass sound. Geddy is in fine form, the band means business! Get this if you know what is good for you. Aud 8.4 - Oh how I love this show! Why? It’s reasonably clear with only a bit of upper level distortion – but man, this just blows EVERYTHING away! The set list for one, it’s got some little gems on it, and the playing – YUP – he’s killin’ it. What else? Oh, a very intimate feel, just has a sort of immediate impact kind of sound. Mitch and Noel are spot on, Jimi feeds off of their energy as well as the audience. A MUST! -
Aud 8.3 - Now Hendrix collectors all know that good quality 68 tour recordings are in short supply, so when they pop up, well it’s a no-brainer…so we have two no-brainers here for you. Both are very decent, and the Vancouver in particular is very cool in both sound and performance. -
Audience 9.7 - One of those recordings that validate my argument that some audience tapes are superior to soundboards. Lush and warm, with great atmosphere and precision detail. Wowsers! -
Soundboard 8.9 - Hard to find anything to complain about when it comes to listening to vintage Kiss board tapes, that is, if you are like me and grew up with Kiss. Believe it or not, Kiss displayed very competent musicianship back in these days. -
SDBRD 9.9 - The only thing that gets this to a 10 is a better kick drum sound (extreme nitpicking here). -
Audience 8.7 - A nicely atmospheric recording without reverb which is nice. Sound mix is good, you hear everyone in pretty good detail. Sounds like it might be maybe 1/3 of the way back in the hall but it’s done with good equipment seems like. Overall a good recording here. Audience 8.7 and 8.8 - Both of these recordings are quite good, and most welcomed. Each feature Bob Welch, although the ’72 also has Danny Kirwan still on board (but not for much longer). You can tell he is drunk, but even with all the stuff happening on stage (some clearly audible), the band still manage to put on a good show. Audience 8.7 - It’s getting harder and harder to find recordings such as this. For one thing, it’s something that I never heard before, either it has been hidden in someone’s shoebox or just got overlooked but either way it’s a GREAT find and sounds real good, with plenty of atmospherics without being washed out or boomy. Audience 9.2 - A recording that does more than merely capture a live concert on tape, it captures the dynamics and palpable vibe of the event. This is lovely stuff, with the band delivering stunning readings of majestic progressive rock numbers like Sound Chaser and Close To The Edge. To be honest, sometimes the overly jazzy keyboards of Moraz do conflict with the style and sound of the band but mostly he is able to provide the correct sounds during the key parts. Audience 8.8 - Easily one of the best audience recordings of the tour. Very close to the main P.A. system on Tony’s side of the stage, this puts Ozzy a little in the background but not so much he cannot be heard reasonably well. It’s just, well, it’s the sheer POWER on display by the band that makes this one so special and that the recording manages to deliver that without glaring problems (and in 1973, wow!) is a miracle. Soundboard 9.2 - Strong and clear as a board should be, but probably not mixed for a live album release, more for front of house sound which explains the interesting way the two guitars are panned…I rather like it. This allows you to really get the musicality of the performance and that is where this tape literally takes off. The playing is top shelf and worthy of paying serious attention to. On a side note, every now and then there will be a tape problem that resolves itself right away and I think this is present on the master. It is not a deal breaker at all, it happens few and far between. In excellent, mind-bending sonic POWER – the kick drum literally will kick your skull in – the crowd extending their pleasure with every note. For those only familiar with their two radio staples, you will most certainly want to re-examine this band’s output after hearing this. I know I did! Pro Radio Broadcast 9.8 - When hearing a recording of a great band in this fidelity, it reveals much more about the artist than what you might learn just listening to their hits on the radio. For instance, thier music is much more layered and nuanced once you hear this show, even live the band is so tight, so professional, that stuff is going on you don’t even get from the album tracks.
