• Delaware 1985 Soundboard 9.3 Nice to hear this period of Trower with a good, punchy board tape that does present a minimal amount of hiss (evident between songs) but other than that not much to complain about. W. Hollywood 1990 Soundboard 9.2 Technically speaking this would rate much higher as it is what one would call a “pristine” board tape. Yes it sounds crystal clear and Robin is literally singing in your ear (a bit much perhaps), but the rating reflects what I personally consider to be a downside of board tapes…the lack of atmosphere and reliance on perfect mix. This was probably mixed for the benefit of what was coming from the stage and not for the sake of the recording being made. It’s a reference tape is what it is. Contrast this to the next show in the set and you’ll begin to understand why I always say a great audience tape beats a board tape. Karlsruhe 2009 Audience 9.5 This show gets a stellar rating because while it is not technically a superior recording (mainly due to the very slight amount of overdrive) it represents most of what I love about great audience recordings. This recording captures the lightning into a bottle so to speak. The fact that there is just a slight bit of overdriven energy (for lack of a more technical term) or lets call it “saturation” for the sake of the audiophiles out there – either way the point is that this recording will get more repeat plays than the board tapes in this set. • Milwaukee 1980 FM Broadcast 8.7 - This was broadcast, the question is, was it recorded professionally and did it sound like this when it was aired?  Probably it did not sound like this – because this is below the threshold for what is acceptable for a legitimately broadcast live performance which means it is probably an off-air tape that has suffered from degradation. That being said, it’s been re-mastered and it sounds decent enough to be included in a set which features all soundboards so that says something for it. Vancouver 1981 FM Broadcast 8.8 - This is another one of those not quite living up to radio broadcast expectations probably due to a capture off the air onto cassette tape, regardless it still sounds fine just a bit dated. A re-mastering helped considerably and that is why the show is included in this set. Dortmund 1982 Soundboard 9.1 - Sounds like a large, open air stadium and that atmosphere is preserved onto the tape. A really decent one for the collectors out there. Daytona 1984 Soundboard 9.2 - Wow, the 80’s, and the unique obsession with that (now very dated) certain drum sound that can take any song and make it “new wave” ha ha!  Thankfully it’s not the case on every song otherwise I would have said skip this show, but it’s a good, well recorded one so enjoy it. Raleigh 1985 Soundboard 9.4 - Good hard panning of the guitars so that you can distinctly hear each of them as autonomous instruments. A hard rocking sound was mixed on this evening. • Audience 8.6 – 8.8  - All of the recordings here are good to very good audience recordings made on obviously portable tape recorders with limited capacity to hold the bandwidth needed for a loud, intense rock group. That being said, the tapes have gone through processing that allows more music information to come through, less tape hiss and background gunk, so you get to actually hear and decipher well what can only be described as groundbreaking experimental rock/jazz/prog by the band that wrote the book on it. Amazing power and finesse on display, and to reiterate my point on sound quality – this collection of live KC is still fundamentally indispensable to any self-proclaimed prog rock aficionado. • Various Sources 9.0 - I give this a high rating for many reasons, as it can be easily assumed that the sound quality will vary being a compilation. The producers were smart to put it together this way, I found it to play much like a legitimate record company release. The worst of the recordings is in itself not even that bad, in the context you are hearing it in, it takes on new significance. I myself did not realize how few times some of these songs were played live, so having a collection like this makes sense. I enjoyed it immensely. So will you. • Four Discs of music that will melt your brain. All are either Very Good or Excellent quality, so it’s not a jarring experience to sit through all four discs, they have a certain continuity to them. I think this is a great time period of music and these guys were just on another level.  It’s a fun thing to ponder, whether there are any bands that can do this sort of thing today – and the answer is “I really don’t think so”. • Audience 9.0/8.5/8.7 - All four discs are very good source tapes with the first two discs being the strongest with a sound quality that sits nicely on the ears, very comfortable, albeit slightly further back in the hall than the other two discs. I think the other shows maybe feature a louder, more up front guitar sound, but at the same time are also a bit more crowded in that frequency although at no time is there distortion present. Disc 3 suffers from a little bit of the typical big sound onto little cassette recorder where it’s just not as clear as you wish but at least you can hear what is going on, and it is not what I would call muddy sounding. Disc 4 is decent in the fact that you have a clear guitar, tone is audible which is crucial when you are listening to Leslie West. All instruments audible and distinct but not rising much above a middle to upper 8 rating. All in all, I am pleased at the overall sound quality in this set seeing as how there are not many really high quality audios of this band. CD 3 - Audience  7.2  (a big step up from previous disc, levels a little low but not so much, kind of thin, gets crowded when the band is loud.) CD 4/5 - Audience  7.7  (good stereo separation, everything is clear, a decent recording!) • Audience -  all shows  Berlin Aud 7.2 A reasonably clear tape, Jimi vocals come through and guitar is right up front too. Drums a little buried but you get enough to know what’s going on. Enjoyable! Cologne Aud 7.0 Mono recording without much separation of instruments, guitar being the clearest here. Hamburg Aud 6.6 Very loud and distorted recording.  Nuremberg Aud 6.7 Thin, with tape noise present, no dynamics, only Jimi's guitar is heard but it is heard clearly ringing out like he was the only one mic’d up!
  • A superbly put together set! Looks positively spectacular. The recordings are all generally pretty decent. CD 1 Audience 7.7 - CD 2 Audience 8.7 - CD 3 Soundboard 9.0 - CD 4 Audience 8.4 - CD 5 Audience 8.4 (these last two discs you MUST turn the volume up loud because the levels are low but the fidelity is decent. The louder the better, and it does NOT distort because there is a ton of headroom here to play with).
  • This set collects not so widely available shows of varying quality but certainly ones that fill in missing parts to a collection. CD 1 - Audience 7.4 - Actually not that bad at all, and probably one of the better ones of this set. CD 2 - Audience 7.7 - Fine recording that kind of stays in a rather crisp mode, but if I were to remaster it or want to add bass this recording is a PERFECT one because highs are so good on this, and accurate to a fault really. A decent recording that needs low end but VERY enjoyable! CD 3 - Audience 7.0 - Might be the worst of this set, but Randy is clear here on this tape, followed by Ozzy, so the priorities are at least straight! CD 4 - Audience 7.5 - Right down the middle, as far as sound-field, but it is not that hard to go ahead and appreciate this for what it is. Mediocre and at times gets really good and clear especially during softer sections of songs. CD 5 - Audience 7.3 - I would rate this higher for the fact that levels are good, and everything can be heard, but the fault is that everything is mid to upper band and gets too harsh for me. I think a good EQ would do wonders, because at least the mids and highs are there in which to round out more and even reduce in favor of low mid and low frequencies.
  • All Pro Studio 9.7 - All tracks were professionally recorded by Pete Townshend in his home studio in Old Church Street, Chelsea, and Twickenham.
  • CD 1 – Aud 8.5 / CD 2- Aud 8.8 / CD 3 – Aud 8.9 / CD 4 – Aud 8.7 / CD 5 – Aud 8.5
  • This entire set is meant to fill in a collector’s gaps. CD 1 - Audience 8.0 - Thin and distant but you do get to hear everything happening, not muddy, and not echoey, so this has bright spots CD 2 - Audience 7.6 / CD 3 -Soundboard 9.5 / CD 4 - Audience 7.5 / CD 5 - Soundboard 8.8
  • Volume 2: CD 1 - Soundboard 9.5 CD 2 - Soundboard 9.5 CD 3 - Soundboard 9.2 CD 4 - Audience 9.2 CD 5 - Audience 9.2
  • CD 1 - Soundboard 8.3  /  CD 2 - Soundboard 8.8  /  CD 3 - Soundboard 8.8 What a difference from 1966 to 1975! I rather like the 70’s Guess Who more, but fascinating to hear their formative sound and style.

  • Metropolitan Opera House NY 1970 Audience 8.4 - A decent tape considering we have very few US 1970 tour audience tapes that sound great. A little sweetening with EQ and you’ve just raised the sound rating another half a point…technology has changed the way collectors think about these old audience source tapes. Newcastle 1971 Audience 8.7 - A surprising new find!  Buried for decades and now dusted off, restored and presented for your approval. It’s not bad!  I can hear it all, with some cool atmosphere. I rather like it! San Francisco 1971 Audience 8.8 - This tape has some depth to it, where you get definition in the bass and not just “low end” which I appreciate. Roger rises above in the sound mix but on this tape nobody is drowned out, it’s evenly mixed and that makes it enjoyable. Some background noise which sounds like it is coming from the house PA but not during the band performing…all in all this is a real good one. • Soundboard 9.4 & Audience 8.6 - the first few discs are excellent soundboard which is cool because they are very early performances and there’s a lot to dive into there. The next couple of discs are good audience tapes, the first being a bit towards the back of a medium sized club, but it’s not bad. Overall it’s an interesting collection, really allows you to contemplate the artists changes over time, with band members, and compositions. Good stuff! • Audience 9.5 - Yes, this is all audience recordings but the quality is impeccable. The guitar is simply SUPREMELY badass, if you are on the fence about Prince, do yourself a favor and dive into this one because no matter what your bias might be about the man, you can’t deny the power and finesse that this music demonstrates. • Tilburg 2008 Audience 9.3 Taper right in the sweet spot with good gear means you will absolutely love this recording. Bold and striking, the guitar is distinct, vocals perfect, and everything else forming a backdrop without being lost. Wowsers! Tilburg 2009 Audience 9.5 This ladies and gentlemen is the proper way in which to capture a live recording. Now, the fact that it is a progressive rock band with multiple sonic textures and loads of dynamics means you have to work a little harder to make sure you a. set up in a good spot, b. use professional gear and c. know how to use the gear.  This, if done correctly, is the result. A SPECTACULAR RECORDING which is a must have even if you don’t know who Mars Volta is, and if that is the case, why not start here?  Stunning. • Audience 9.5 - What makes this one so special is that it is a COMPLETE document of the entire processes that unfold while a performance is orchestrated. That means you will hear the entire soundcheck (a concert in itself), the show in its entirety, and the Aftershow. All of this occurs over two days, and let me tell you when I say it is immersive, I mean in the literal sense you are completely immersed from start to finish. Even the sonic quality is excellent although I understand this is entirely subjective. For me, I loved it. I loved being in the crowd and even the screams and oohs and aaahs added a real sense of realism and were not obnoxious at all. The mix and balance of the sound is so good, I love the drums, guitars are really present and vocals are in a good spot. • SDBRD 9.4 /Audience 8.1/Audience 8.8/Audience 8.3 - A comprehensive collection but not everything is represented here, but I would say the more complete recordings are…and so, well, what you get is a pretty mixed bag. The good stuff is very good, and the not so good stuff is…not so good. What does it mean? Should I get this 4 disc set?  Yes you should if you care anything at all about this seminal band. There just isn’t a whole lot of live “bootleg” recordings because they predate the era of the taper – not to say there aren’t tapes from 1967-1968 because there are, but not nearly as plentiful or as good as tapes that were made subsequently. That being said, I still found myself listening to everything in this set because you can’t argue the fact that hearing Jeff Beck or Jimmy Page before they were rock gods is immensely interesting. • Audience 8.7 - Both tapes sound as if they were recorded by the same person they are very similar although the slight nod goes to London for being just a touch brighter. That being said, both tapes do an admirable job (for 1971 standards) of capturing the epic ferocity of this amazing rock band in their prime, or just before they got universal “commercial” success. It’s hard to imagine what it must have been like being there in person, the volume, the intensity, I would have been drained after the first song! • First Show Audience 8.5 - A jagged recording that reflects the kind of music this man played every night. It’s not super clear nor is it muddy, and it’s not dynamic nor is it monophonic. It’s a tape that seems like it has promise, if it was re-mastered I think it could be vastly improved but I like it because it’s so raw and honest…like a bar fight ha ha! The second show is also an audience recording although it is much better coming in at an 8.8 on the ratings scale. Clear, and some better dynamics going on. A good one, and a good show. • Heyoka - The Spirit of Revelation 2-LP. Gatefold cover colored vinyl limited edition double album filled with incredible late 70s progressive hard rock from this unheralded Texas group. Mention the name Heyoka to any self respecting rock music aficionado in the state of Texas and chances are they remember this legendary 70s hard rock band. Without a doubt this band was one of the greatest unsigned bands ever to originate from Texas. Opening for every major touring act that passed through San Antonio, including Rush’s first tour of America, this band even had a song featured on MTV in the early 80’s, before it got unceremoniously banned. They featured two guitarists, a singer that played flute, keyboards, and a crack rhythm section. The music is reminiscent of Jethro Tull and Kansas, but retaining a unique quality all its own that will take the listener on a musical journey evoking Native American imagery under the mystical guide of Black Elk. All tracks recorded between the years 1977 and 1986, almost all previously unissued.  For those into classic era Rush, Kansas, Jethro Tull, Thin Lizzy and the like. An absolute must-have release! This double album collection features bonus tracks not found on the CD version! Also comes with a 12 x 24 color poster!
