• Audience 8.8 - I am very thankful this recording exists, so few tapes from around this time that are clean and audible. Now, it gets off to a bumpy start but smoothes out and remains consistent for the duration. It’s taken from I would say the middle of the venue but does not suffer from typical distance recordings. The main P.A. system is strong, so you get a good signal here, all instruments present and accounted for. Vocals remain very much up front in the mix, guitars follow.  All in all this is really outstanding and the time period is optimal. • Audience 8.8 - This is a real surprise, for this early vintage you do not expect anything really good especially out of the Music Hall but I have news for you – this is a good, good tape. Of course it is going to have that almost cavernous kind of quality but  regardless it’s a really clear sound and one that shows off each member of the band and offers at the same time a feeling of time and place. • Audience 9.0 - An incredible document from The Netherlands that you can’t deny.  I am a huge fan of this band, and of Jerney Kaggman in particular (one look will indicate the simple reason why), but seriously if you have any interest at all in progressive rock and have not yet discovered this band, this is a great opportunity to take a chance I promise you won’t regret it. Sound quality here is very good, capturing the power and finesse of the band and with this fine lady singer it’s like you don’t even need a PA because her soaring, soulful voice pierces the veil of sound with ease. • Audience 9.3 - The second this begins you know it’s gonna be great, and it’s better than great. I’ve heard radio broadcasts that don’t sound as nice as this. I need atmosphere, I want to feel the space around me, the venue itself is a part of the event. Audience tapes of high quality can sometimes deliver more atmosphere than the best soundboard, and sometimes it’s necessary if you want to relive an event to have that atmosphere included in the recording. • Soundboard 9.9 - This nearly brought me to tears. I always knew this band could reach the highest level of quality, in performance, in tone, in showmanship, and here it is. Yeah, sure, I know what you are thinking: “it’s mid 80’s Aerosmith, it’s the doldrums of rock, it’s a washed up bunch of druggies” but I have to tell you that if this marks a “comeback” then it’s the most amazing comeback I have ever heard. I’ve heard tons of live Aerosmith and I take this show over ALL of them. Just listen to how everyone plays off each other, how well they know each other it's like the magic has returned and they know it. Aerosmith The Orpheum Theater Boston, MA. • Audience 8.7 - It’s difficult to express sometimes to people who maybe did not start collecting until the digital age what it is like for us old cats to be listening again to a recording we first heard on cassette…and could barely listen to they were so awful, muddy, gen’d down, etc. – and now they show up like maidens to the prom. This old recording sounds like years of mud and grime were wiped away, still not great but man what a difference! The bonus tracks from Anaheim got the same treatment but the original tape was recorded from further back so is not as good as the Detroit, but historically seems more important being that it is with Jeff Beck. I think this stuff here is like finding unpolished diamonds…maybe a little bit dirty but they are invaluable and hold beauty in and of themselves. Aerosmith Cobo Arena Detroit, MI. • Soundboard 9.0 - A surprisingly good recording considering that it attempts to capture something pretty untamed especially for the time. There are lots of unrehearsed punk moments here, but overall I remain quite impressed with this early Misfits music because it sounds like a genie being let out of the bottle. • Disc 1 Denver 1976 Soundboard 9.5 - A very bright and clear board tape with emphasis in the mix for maximum vocal clarity, but I like the way the drums sound and the horns are very clear too. Overall this is a “funk” mix. My only criticism might be the sizzle of the cymbals but they aren’t crowding the mix which might have been a deal-breaker for me. This is good funked up stuff! Disc 2 Oakland 1977 Soundboard/open mic audience 9.3 - I have to say my ears do not lie and there definitely is a professional quality to this recording but I could swear they have ambient mic’s to add atmosphere or perhaps to fill gaps?  When the music is playing it’s most def soundboard, that is all I know. • Audience 8.7 - OK, so I totally understand why someone might pass this up- but I think you would be missing something special. It’s an audience recording, very very deep into the crowd, it’s noisy, it’s not fantastic but it is great – now here’s the rub: If you are reading this review, this can be considered a spoiler alert. It took me a complete song before I realized the audience was not a part of the show. The people near the mic sound like they are a part of the stage show, or at least they did to me. I felt like I was in New Orleans but its New York City. I liked this performance, and I tolerate the recording, I came away after listening to this feeling I understood Prince just a little better. After this review I think it’s only fair to warn you – on a few songs the drummer’s high hat sounds like a missile shooting through your speakers – it’s unnerving and I don’t think there’s much you can do but wait for the next song. • Audience 8.7 - This is a marvel! I mean, who would of thought to bother recording the completely underground opening acts for Genesis!  Come to think of it, maybe even Genesis were still considered to be "underground" around this time! The point being that because someone went to the trouble to bring gear and set up to record you don't immediately expect that person to get ready in time to record each act in its entirety. They had to have planned it, to make sure they had enough blank tape, got situated in a good spot, got it rolling and balanced and then made sure to get the whole performance...MUCH respect to taper!  The sound quality is very good, it is clear the machine used is good gear but I am inclined to think either the house mix was not ideal or his position was not ideal but the recording itself you can tell is solid. The flaw?  I would call it mid-band crunch, or too much information crowding the middle band but not to the extent of distortion or overload, more that it ended up not having the clarity you want. The low end is round and tight, it's a comfortable sound but the overall mix is average. • Audience 8.8 - Truly a marvel, you get three blockbuster acts performing outdoors at a large German Rock Festival in 1974 and you are sitting there listening to something that was probably forgotten within days by everyone as they smoke, drank, and partied until the cows came home in preparation for the next festival that came to town. What I am really saying is that while the band members and audiences probably cannot recall what they did on September 27th, 1974, we can now relive that very day in the lives of all of those people because taper managed to capture everything while sitting in a decent spot and running decent gear. Why he/she did this I do not know but I certainly appreciate their efforts not taking it for granted one bit. The music here sounds good to my ears, very comfortable even if not very distinct in the mid band (where guitars reside) but more than made up for with a beautiful round bass sound and good vocals and highs. • Audience 8.9 - Two different evenings in Boston, each three years apart. For one thing, it's a well balanced capture all the way around (both gigs). Hearing the differences between stadium acts performing in '74 and then in '77 reveals subtle changes in music and delivery. I like being able to notice things like that and sets like this really allow the listener to immerse themselves in their own analytics as they listen. The sound is very good especially because a well done remastering job refreshed the tapes. • Audience 8.8 - Another amazing historical document that gives us the entire picture of what it was like to attend a rock concert in Boston in the early 70's. It's one evening out of 365 other evenings in the calendar year but it is a year that I did not get to experience anything like this, being that I was still in elementary school. It's a glaring example of what I was missing!  Taper was not only prescient in capturing all the acts but he manages to do so with minimal problems and in very decent quality. Original tape transfers received recent treatment and have never sounded better, it makes me wonder why this material never got picked up by any of the boot labels in Japan or Europe for production. • Audience 8.7 -  There is something very special in these amateur audio documents. While you could be overly critical of them for failing to live up to modern sonic standards, the truth is that not only is the audio acceptable as it is, but as a moment captured forever on tape that not only manages to document the entire evening (opening act included) but does so with few blemishes. It's decent quality too, although does not offer extremely dynamic low end or crisp high end, it's a recording that stays mainly in the middle with better definition on guitars which is fine. • Disc 1 Pittsburgh 1974 Audience 8.5 A rather middle of the road tape that does not offend the ears, but does not offer great separation of instruments. It’s not that it is real muddy either, it’s just that Sabbath were very loud, and unless you were seated ideally for taping, and, if your taping gear was high quality, you “might” get a very good recording of this band. That being said, I have heard much worse, and this is a new tape to circulation. Some good jams, Ozzy is very excited this night. Disc 2 Niagara Falls 1978 Audience 8.7 A bit better than the previous disc in this set, it offers better separation of instruments and more dynamics. In parts, it’s actually even better than the 8.7 rating. A rare tape, it offers something to collectors and features complete versions of the Technical Ecstasy songs which is a big plus. Disc 3 Live Rehearsals and Unknown Live 1979-80 Soundboard 9.8 Two very cool pieces that may have fallen through the cracks for most collectors but thankfully included in this Lost Recordings set. • Soundboard 9.6 - A great sound happening here, but what I really love most about it is the brassy, killer bass. Obviously it’s everything, it’s all great, but Prince, even being mainly onto a funky, keyboard, drum, bass approach on this tour (guitar is present in places just not emphasized) which might not be everyone’s cup of tea, still is able to engage this old rock and roller. • Studio Quality 9.7 - Another fantastic collection of stuff Prince did in his studio and on air with disc 2 being the unreleased Milk and Honey album with Tamar.. What struck me about this particular set is right off the bat, the first track on disc one just blew me away. It’s an extended remix of Computer Blue with the sickest guitar, a real grinding, psychedelic and metallic tone that he squeezes to maximum effect and doesn’t want it to end. Neither did I!! • Studio Quality 9.7 - A lot of collectors may think they are getting the same stuff over and over again in a different package but with the Prince studio collections you really are getting something different, but that might just mean alternate takes, mixes, or a different session with different players. Prince did like to experiment a lot and might want to try a song a hundred different ways before he was satisfied, similar maybe to Jimi Hendrix. I always find something to enjoy and always end up admiring Prince more and more after each listen…which is why I keep offering these titles because it lets me listen to even more Prince! • Soundboard 9.1/Audience 8.8 - An incomplete board tape that is completed by a very decent audience (thank goodness!) to present a great gig by a great band. • Audience 8.4 - Buried in a closet for decades this important document has finally surfaced. It’s, to my ears, slightly better than the next oldest live document which I believe is the Music Machine gig. The tape itself is not as bad as you’d imagine and that could be due to the diligent re-mastering that was done. The sound is not as murky and indecipherable as a lot of the other 1980 tapes. This can be appreciated, I mean, this is May of 1980 the band had yet to break open and even though they had a hardcore following, was not known outside of UK in any substantive sense. If you were a fan of Iron Maiden in these times, it’s akin to investing money in Google stock when it was first offered. Why would you?  …maybe because you liked what they were doing and had a hunch. • Audience 9.1 - This show is divided into two sets, with both sounding similar but the 1st set is just a touch rougher in the sense that I hear a tiny bit of channel overload (not distorted!) and less clarity (but not harmfully so) than the 2nd set. Overall, both are very well recorded and I would imagine set 2 was broadcast as this was typical around this time and other Rosyln, NY. “My Father’s Place” shows were indeed broadcast on local FM radio. So, while it seems Set 2 is the better audio (fractionally), I would say it was recorded for broadcast and this is the pre-broadcast tape recorded from the audience with open mics…yes? No? Maybe so?  I have no idea…it’s really good but not radio station broadcast good so maybe this show was never recorded for broadcast at all. • Studio Quality 9.4 - I admit I never was a fan, but being a music collector I ended up discovering a few things I’d missed and this is one. While I am still not the biggest Morrissey fan, I think he certainly fits with this style and let’s admit it these songs are all quite good. The Smiths Demos & Outtakes 01 -Reel Around The Fountain (July 1983, Troy Tate final mix) 02 -The Hand That Rocks The Cradle (October 1983, John Porter monitor mix) 03 -This Night Has Opened My Eyes (June 1984, unreleased studio recording) 04 -Rusholme Ruffians (July 1984, John Porter first take) 05 -I Misses You (December 1984, instrumental) 06 -There Is A Light That Never Goes Out (September 1985, early take) 07 -The Queen Is Dead (Fall 1985, original unedited version) 08 -Frankly, Mr Shankly (November 1985, Stephen Street "trumpets" recording) 09 -Ask (9 June 1986, probable first-ever take) 10 -Is It Really So Strange? • Audience 8.7 - Not too bad for 1972, this tape has some nice energy, and not to say it doesn’t have limitations, but it seems to deliver a lot more than the expectation. You have to accept that the hall is a touch echoey, or at least the guitar seems to bounce off the wall to give a very short reverb effect. It’s not a distraction at all, in fact it is exactly how it sounded at the show – the recording is very accurate.
