Soundboard 9.2 - This is the only known board tape from 1975. It’s very good, I find no real problems other than occasional drop outs, and it’s maybe a little distracting here and there but I don’t think it kills the fun. Audience 9.0/8.5/8.7 - All four discs are very good source tapes with the first two discs being the strongest with a sound quality that sits nicely on the ears, very comfortable, albeit slightly further back in the hall than the other two discs. I think the other shows maybe feature a louder, more up front guitar sound, but at the same time are also a bit more crowded in that frequency although at no time is there distortion present. Disc 3 suffers from a little bit of the typical big sound onto little cassette recorder where it’s just not as clear as you wish but at least you can hear what is going on, and it is not what I would call muddy sounding. Disc 4 is decent in the fact that you have a clear guitar, tone is audible which is crucial when you are listening to Leslie West. All instruments audible and distinct but not rising much above a middle to upper 8 rating. All in all, I am pleased at the overall sound quality in this set seeing as how there are not many really high quality audios of this band. Soundboard 9.7 - This is the one to get if you want to hear this band at arguably the peak of their powers. Sounding like a flashier, somewhat more progressive version of Iron Maiden to these ears, but whoa nelly there is a whole lot of premium quality musicianship happening and it is happening in fantastic quality. Most recording of busy, progressive metal groups simply have a hard time mixing the different instruments in such a way as to deliver the punch without over-killing it and destroying the integrity of the sound. This recording is brilliant because it doesn’t do that, and I honestly have never heard live early Queensyche in this manner before and it is a thrill, it’s a MUST have if you have even a passing interest. Audience 8.7 - Even though this recording does not feature a full and rounded spectrum of lows to high, it is very clear and resides mostly in the middle range EQ-wise. So, it’s most welcome to lovers of VDGG because there’s just not a whole lot of high quality recordings out there. This one is one of those that grows on you and sounds better and better the more you listen…get it! Soundboard 9.3 - A decent but kind of middle rangey sound, but in this case I like it because it gives the Kinks a more punkish sound. This material is also kind of punkish so the delivery and the sound of the recording itself convinces you that this band wanted to impart the punk attitude. Some of the songs are definitely not punkish but we know it’s not all encompassing, just generally I think The Kinks liked the punk ethos. I mean, they play a song called “Prince Of The Punks” so what does that tell you? An absolute beast of a canister! Loaded down with 14 discs, it's quite the experience as you follow the Who on tour in the States in 1980. For the most part, all of the recordings reside in the mid to upper 8's on the 1-10 scale, with a couple coming in at over 9.0 (Essen, for instance). I found it to be very satisfying as all of the songs I enjoy hearing them play are represented, without the overindulgence into Tommy...finally! Audience 8.6-8.8 - A tape that begins inauspiciously as a pretty good but distant tape. Slowly, it begins to blossom into something much more intriguing. Taper smuggled very good equipment into the venue, that much is obvious, and he worked at getting into a better position during the show until what you end up with is a very tasty audience recording. Audience 8.8 - Every now and then a tape surfaces that really gets you excited as a collector. This one is just such a tape, because for one thing not only is the quality very good, but it’s super nice on the ears. What I mean is, the timbre of the recording is very comfortable, so it’s easy to listen to the entire show there is no fatigue on the ears at all. The icing on the cake is having both opening acts in the same kind of quality, in complete form. So, what more could you ask for? Soundboard 8.8 - A less than perfect board tape as far as the overall timbre, and the mix itself. I found this tape to resemble maybe a really good AM broadcast, but perhaps that is too harsh! It’s not bad, I just personally found it to be lacking some “punch”, although it is clear, it’s a board tape so there will be a built in appreciation for the “closeness” of the sounds. Audience 9.2 - Amazing atmosphere that the band completely catches and performs up to. The crowd is very responsive but does not intrude on the recording – even during clap-alongs which I normally hate but here is actually enhances the song! Fantastic all the way around, and there’s plenty of headroom left in the recording so if you increase frequency (if you have an EQ) or volume you won’t destroy the integrity of the sound. Stuttgart 1970 Audience 9.1 - A sometimes startling tape in that in certain sections of the performance you could swear the effects are swirling right over your head. A nice trip through the most important years for Chicago. All of the audio quality is either very good or excellent, with a mix of audience and soundboard sources. Includes a wonderful soundboard recording of Terry Kath's last show. A fitting way to end a great set. Nice touch to include a video CD with some real nice old footage. Los Angeles 1975 - Soundboard 9.5 Offenburg 1977 Audience 8.9 - A very strong tape for sure. Clear, and pretty dynamic with great bass, and deep drums with guitars very tuneful and nicely placed in the overall mix. Lovely. Buffalo 1977 Audience 8.6 - The recording here is pretty clear, it definitely does lean towards the upper mid and highs but there thankfully is enough bottom to keep it from being irritating. Your ears do adjust quickly, and at some point you begin to notice it is actually very decent…think of it as maybe a superb AM radio broadcast (it isn’t, but it sounds like it could have been). Boston 1978 Audience 8.8 - It is apparent that very good gear recorded this show, the sound is warm and rounded, not a jagged, raucous tape like a lot of the amateur recordings can turn out to be. The live mix sound is good too, and the live mix is spot on. I think this tape offers a lot and you’ll probably give it multiple spins…especially after you hear Schenker just RIPPING on guitar. In this presentation it certainly allows you to understand the contributions of Ace! The bonus material is all outstanding. This is worth picking up despite the strange board tape because it is extremely early Kiss and these kinds of tapes are very scarce. -

New Haven 1975 Audience 9.0 - Nice one here, a lovely guitar tone that rings out clear and true, so close you can put yourself in tapers seats! Only heard one small drop out, there’s another somewhere else but I don’t recall. Only lasted a few seconds. Either way, this is truly an electrifying tape and I have to say I think it can be considered a must have. Tulsa 1975 Audience 8.6 -A recently re-mastered version has appeared, and thankfully so because this tape suffered serious hiss and muddiness before. Now, there’s some hiss remaining but not near as much, and layer after layer of muck has been removed revealing a fine tape, and a blistering performance. Detroit 1976 Audience 9.1 - Electric atmosphere, almost palpable as you settle into a great show by a guitar master. Band is hot, audience is responding…a great night for rock and roll! Audience 8.2 - Not the best tape by any stretch but it’s also a scarcity…very few World Invasion Tour tapes survive and this one does have a couple of things going for it –first, it is NOT muddy! It’s not distinctive, but that is not the same as muddiness. It’s a “clear” tape that is just not from close up, and is not done on professional gear. I started listening to this thinking “oh man” but believe it or not you will find a reason to continue on through the whole show, especially when Dave rants about his little problem in Cincinnati the night before. Audience 8.2 - What was once completely unlistenable has now revealed itself to be a tape that contains music and audible sounds…and sound that can be deciphered easily…although clearly not in any kind of high fidelity. Still what you get from this tape is a VERY obvious indication that Bowie knew where music was headed, and in real time is literally creating a new genre and the audience is in pure ecstasy. FM Broadcast 9.2 - A great recording that captures the atmosphere and the thrilling musicianship brightly, if maybe a touch too boldly on the meters…no worries, there’s nothing to interfere with your listening pleasure. The band…did not know much about them but they sure have the chops. I get a little bit of a sort of Whitesnake influence, but not any of the trademark cheesiness. Jake E. Lee is very acrobatic without unnecessary shredding, I would not call his playing shred at all in fact. It’s actually quite tasteful and great use of effects…thrilling at times, and very few dive bombs and when he does it’s in and out, they don’t overstay their welcome. I could say that for the songs too, they all have good balance and set up all the solos nicely. They even cover Purple Haze…umm…maybe they should have left that one alone. But everything else is tops.
