Audience 8.5 - A really fine document of a superb time for the band…young, hungry, full of spit and vinegar and quite frankly at the top of their game. The playing is transcendental, a band completely in sync with each other. The tape is noise free, and while most of the time it sounds a touch on the dull side, it does brighten up and you know it’s probably because the taper got bold and moved closer to the stage. I would not expect there to be many high-end live tapes floating around due to the fact that most people probably did not know who this guy was. Audience 8.6 - I don’t quite know what to make of this tape – it is very clear but with some kind of slight crispness in the middle to high band that suggests the microphone being used was not up to the task. That being said, it’s still a pretty good recording, and with a class mic it would have been a 9.0 or better. Well worth getting, that is my final assessment. Audience 7.8 - Recorded on what sounds like a realistic cassette deck, it’s limited in dynamic range and clarity. It is not, however, a pile of muck and murk, you can hear pretty much every instrument, and guitar cuts through during solos but rhythm-wise it’s behind the sound a bit. Vocals are clear, I get drums pretty well, so it’s not a waste of time and it’s a great tour with 25 or 6 to 4 being their latest blockbuster smash hit. I would get this if you appreciated the band during their initial rise to stardom, as the joy in their playing does come through on this tape. Audience 8.6 - This is an untouched, raw transfer straight from the reels, and as such it will sound like it could be MUCH better sonically with some professional sound re-mastering. Many people will no doubt want to hear it as it was recorded, and it is good, it’s really pretty good, but what I would prefer is a sonic facelift because I think this one really deserves it. It’s still a great show.
