• Audience 8.7 to 9.0 (range) - All pretty darn good. Classic early Kiss, and very interesting at times especially when they do the groove rock numbers. Wish they did that more.
  • Soundboard 8.6 - Very clear, with occasional wow and flutter but the atmosphere is intact and the history is undeniable. A certain must for any Kiss fan!
  • A mix of various sources but I find overall quality to be very good to excellent. In fact, it's strange but there are better sounding tapes from '75 than there are for the following year. You'd think audio quality would get better each subsequent year...alas one only need to listen to most of the 1980's audience tapes to know that is simply not the case. • Soundboard 8.9 - Hard to find anything to complain about when it comes to listening to vintage Kiss board tapes, that is, if you are like me and grew up with Kiss.  Believe it or not, Kiss displayed very competent musicianship back in these days.
  • KISS - "New York Academy Of Music - First Demo Tape 1973" Academy Of Music, New York Ciy, NY December 31st, 1973 KISS - 1st demo tape Electric Lady Studios, New York City, NY March 13th, 1973 Produced and engineered by Dave Wittman supervised by Eddie Kramer 01 Deuce 02 Strutter 03 Cold Gin 04 Watchin' You 05 Black Diamond Academy Of Music, New York Ciy, NY December 31st, 1973 06 Deuce 07 Cold Gin 08 Nothin' To Lose 09 Firehouse 10 Let Me Know 11 100,000 Years (rare live version) 12 Black Diamond 13 Goin' Blind (Howard Stern show) 14 Love Theme From KISS (1995 NYC KISS Konvention tour) 15 Mr. Speed (1995 NYC KISS Konvention tour) 16 Dirty Livin' (extended version 1979) Notes: On March 13, 1973, KISS recorded a low-budget five-song demo tape with producer Eddie Kramer. In October of 1973, Bill Aucoin, who had witnessed several KISS concerts during the summer months, approached the group to become their personal manager. KISS hired Aucoin, and subsequently inked a recording contract with Casablanca Records on November 1, 1973. KISS was the first act signed to Neil Bogart's new label. KISS began recording tracks for their debut LP at Bell Sound Studios in New York City during Autumn of '73. On December 31st, KISS performed at the Academy of Music in New York City, opening for Blue Öyster Cult and Iggy Pop, with the hyped New Years Eve gig billed as the band's official industry premiere. This has gone down in KISStory as the first time Gene would accidentally ignite his hair while breathing fire at the end of "Firehouse!" "Dirty Livin'" extended version wasn't very widely known at the time of release, possibly because it was only released in countries like Italy, Germany, France and Mexico. Soundboard 8.6 The board mix favors only one half of the band to the near exclusion of the others but does level out some as it progresses. In this presentation it certainly allows you to understand the contributions of Ace!  The bonus material is all outstanding. This is worth picking up despite the strange board tape because it is extremely early Kiss and these kinds of tapes are very scarce.

  • Audience 7.0 - Decent Audience, a little thin maybe but I rate it 7.0 as it is clear and not distorted and there's some headroom for EQ and boost. It sounds un-mastered to me, but low generation or master tape sourced.
  • Audience 9.3 - Super tight, clean recording from real close. Obviously a taper who knew what to do, and did it. Excellent! • Brand New - Sealed  Sound quality on all releases on this label is excellent.
  • Audience 8.9 - The great thing about this band is that most times a relatively normal tape machine can capture them cleanly and a really good machine captures them gloriously. This is a very good tape, almost approaching a dirty glory. King Crimson Arts Centre Milwaukee, Wisconsin USA September 28, 1973 Disc 1 01. Larks' Tongues in Aspic, Part One 02. Bob’s MC 03. • Audience 8.2 - What does this tape offer?  Unequaled tension, suspense, musicianship, mood, and satisfaction. Is it the best quality?  No, but you can clearly hear every instrument, and I will take an 8.2 Crimson over 98% of anyone else in a heartbeat. This music is just brilliant and intense.
  • Audience 8.6 – 8.8  - All of the recordings here are good to very good audience recordings made on obviously portable tape recorders with limited capacity to hold the bandwidth needed for a loud, intense rock group. That being said, the tapes have gone through processing that allows more music information to come through, less tape hiss and background gunk, so you get to actually hear and decipher well what can only be described as groundbreaking experimental rock/jazz/prog by the band that wrote the book on it. Amazing power and finesse on display, and to reiterate my point on sound quality – this collection of live KC is still fundamentally indispensable to any self-proclaimed prog rock aficionado. • Audience 8.4 - This is a recording that is hard to figure out because on the one hand it could also be taped in a television studio which is my hunch. The tapers and those around them can be heard between songs but settle down once the music starts, it kind of adds a lot to the atmosphere. That being said, this is still pretty good, and what a gig, really, I mean amazing!
