• Studio 9.8 - As expected, near perfect quality. The mix is a bit different to the album we all know and love, but not enough to change the total badassery of the tones, complexity, inventiveness, and composition. Just a great artifact to get a slightly altered perspective. Megadeth Peace Sells...But Who's Mixing? Alternate mixes 1. Wake Up Dead 2. The Conjuring 3. Peace Sells 4. Devil's Island 5. • Audience 8.7 - I can imagine the difficulty in trying to capture something like this with all of the challenges not least of which is sheer volume and venues not ideal for the kind of acoustics metal presents. Does that mean this recording is bad? No, it's obviously done on gear that can handle the job, but to my ears it's something that you will need at least two songs to adjust, but once you do, it becomes the kind of tape that finds you sort of hanging on to see what happens next. It just feels like it will keep improving and maybe it does, or maybe you just find that you kind of dig it. MEGADETH TOKYO 1988 1ST NIGHT Live at Nakano Sunplaza Tokyo, Japan 12th July 1988 01. • Audience 8.8 - I give this recording high marks for being one of the good ones, and you know how important any live recording with Randy Rhoades is so instantly when you hear this, and your ears go "wow, cool", well that means we have something special. Now, it does take a song or so to get balanced, maybe that is the taper and maybe that is the house, either way it is typical of an old audience tape to start a little rough but settle in as it goes. I am not saying this is super-duper, but when you have at least a very listenable tape, where you can clearly hear Randy and Ozzy, maybe a tiny bit of overload here but it doesn't matter - my ears don't lie and I felt this one delivered the goods. • Audience 8.7 - This could also get a few tenths of a point up for the careful re-mastering that recently was applied to the old tape. It definitely needed a refresh, and it got one and it is way the better for it. The highlight for me is that Randy's guitar is the clearest instrument, followed by Ozzy and the others all decently placed in the soundfield with the only knock being the overall clarity and dynamics. That being said, this is a great recording for the time period, knowing how precious few great sounding Blizzard tour tapes there are. I have to rank this in the top 5 I think, because the guitar is so good (you get the tone, and a great sense of the spirit of the room and the band). • SDBRD 9.5 - both of these gigs are spectacular, for me they represent an all too brief high water mark for the band where things are unbelievably tight and incomprehensibly cosmic. • Professionally recorded, vinyl source 9.4 - Exceptional. If you are listening for the musicianship than you will love it. This was ripped from a vinyl source and consequently some artifacts are present although minimized. I am inclined to believe some of this is a live in studio recording (listen to "I'm On Fire For You Baby" and tell me that is from the same concert). • RCMH - Audience 8.9 - A nice atmosphere, even though it is a large hall there is a charming warmth here. Natalie's vocals carry very well, she is prominent in the mix. There is some background audience chatter occasionally that adds an element of immediacy without being a distraction. I don't usually condone chatter near the taper but the taper has done a great job with this "immersive" situation and I rather like it. Pier 84 - Audience 9.1/SDBRD 9.3 - Very similar to the RCMH show but more clarity in the high end, and slightly better separation of instruments. This is a VERY good recording that will provide many enjoyable moments for the listener. Then after the 1st song it switches to soundboard source (radio broadcast I believe) and it is good, solid, punchy, but not quite as atmospheric as the previous source which was really quite good too. 10,000 Maniacs New York Maniacs 88-89 Disc 1 Radio City Music Hall New York City, NY. 06-29-1989 1. • Audience 9.4 - A smooth and comfortable sound, obviously taper running great mics and in a relatively decent position. The mix favors vocals and there's a great kick drum presence that propels the music. Guitars seem to hover overhead, not bombastic but rather more subdued but not absent by any means. Audience members are occasionally heard nearby, and that reminds you that you are hearing a stealth recording albeit one done with semi-pro gear. • Audience 8.8 - A show new to circulation, it presents a severely under represented period of the band. Not too many tapes have surfaced (and no known videos) so whatever we can get, we appreciate. Here, taper did an admiral job even though he's clearly immersed in a boisterous audience. There is plenty of audience present, but thankfully what you get most of is a relatively clear and atmospheric ELO on a great night. There is a touch of overcrowding within the mid-range frequency, but nothing that distorts so there's zero muddiness and maybe less low end that you might prefer. Overall I have to say it fits nicely into my ELO collection right next to the one or two other 1981 shows (like I said, few and far between).

  • Ohio - Soundboard 9.8 - Excellent live sound, vibrant and alive! Sounds like yesterday. Davis - Audience 8.8 - Mid size hall acoustics but a good, clear tape that probably sounds a lot like what the show actually sounded like. Taper occasionally stops machine just before some songs end (possibly trying to save tape) but the overall job done here is admirable for its stability. The liveness of the tape gives an excitement factor to the show, that counts for something too when rating a tape. New York - Soundboard 9.7 - Professionally recorded and it is obvious this could have been meant for a release or at the very least a broadcast, since most Bottom Line shows were broadcast I would say this sounds like a pre-broadcast reel. Amazing!

  • Audience 8.8 - Both shows here have the same dynamic - Massive volume! Now, here's the rub: the recordings are blast furnaces of rock and roll but NOT distorted beyond just the tiniest amount of crunch on the fringe of the upper-middle band. That means you get raw power as opposed to earschplittenloudenboomer,if you catch my drift. It's just a well recorded RAWK show at high volume and intensity...as it should be.

Yes, you will get knocked around down in the pit with the fans, yes you will hear the sounds of incredibly excited fans, and yes, the will feel absolutely like you are right there. The thing is, when you realize someone went through a bit of trouble to do this it just makes such a difference as you listen and understand this is a live, frenzied atmosphere with a very loud rock and roll band right in front of you. • Audience 9.5 - a legendary recording that has been carefully treated by sensitive ears not wanting to revise history but to bring out every possible nuance, and succeeding. One to have for sure. The second show is also great, ranking a solid 9.2 but also well worth diving into.

  • Soundboard 9.7 - Amazing! Progressive rock played at a super high level infusing all kinds of rhythms and styles. A great sound mix, you hear every instrument well-balanced but some juicy, punchy bass at the low end really sets this one on a great path to your eardrums.

  • Audience 8.7 - Sounds like 1977, very dated but it's a very clear tape. Doesn't stray too much into the low end of the sound pool, but neither is it a "thin to win" tape. It's a mid range sound, a good one, but kind of narrow in some regards, almost like a REALLY good AM radio sound. I like it nonetheless.

  • Radio Broadcast 9.3 - A little dated sounding maybe but that is to be expected. The technical audio quality is great, and should please even the most discerning of tastes.

  • Audience 8.5 - A slighly better than average tape with a lot of live atmosphere, and I don't know how large this hall was but it doesn't feel very large in the recording. Everything is very clear and good separation of instruments too, it can use just a touch more dynamic but otherwise it's strong. He's playing for his people, so you know you are gonna get his best stuff, and this is top shelf (with the crowd understandably right there for every call and response. Great crowd.

  • Audience 8.7 - Better than average, the tape has dynamics to it and even if vocals sound somewhat distant, the bass and guitar have a nice attack with the low end having that chest pounding quality which adds a lot to the electrifying atmospherics. Rory is particularly savage, playing what is probably a really wild crowd since it is where he is from. The performance is worth the entrance fee, the sound quality is good enough to warrant extended engagement. Full disclosure: There is some tape hiss present although it only becomes obvious when the band is not playing.

  • Audience 9.5 - Recently re-mastered and never sounding better, this old tape is full of life. The sound is bold, and really the only things keeping it from being even higher on the ratings scale is just some minor dtuff. I sometimes hear tape slippage or squeal but it's barely noticeable and infrequent, and there are some other small issues that occasionally pop up but since the sound is so great you just don't even notice any flaws. I think this one belongs in your must have list.

  • Audience 8.8 - A good early period show when he was probably in the UK for the first go-round. He made the most of it, with some BBC appearances and a huge gig at Reading which went off well. The recording here is very good, a little hissy and maybe not as clear as we would prefer but it has balls, and everyone is pretty distinct in the mix. The bass and drums are devastating, and Pat is ferocious! The BBC material is excellent.
