Soundboard 9.3 - A very well traveled tape, seeing release as a video, as well as countless boot CD’s. The video was so-so, the audio has always been great. The show itself, not their best, and not their worst. Is it essential? It’s a great sounding ’76 board tape (the closing gig of the tour in Europe) so, my thought is that it should be somewhat necessary in the collection. Audience 9.4 - Beautiful and well balanced, this taper was well known to have produced consistently high quality work in the area taping a variety of concerts big and small. Band was opening for Badfinger, and this is the earlier of the two performances that day. This is one of the only extant live recordings of Big Star playing in the ‘70s that has not been officially released. In fact, during the introduction to the Buffalo show a point is made regarding the last performance there at the venue that it was not their best due to an illness with a band member and that this show would be no such thing. Audience 8.8 - I can’t believe it was 32 years ago I attended, and recorded, this concert. It was my birthday present, although this actually went down one day before my b-day. It’s weird because Joe also sang “Birthday” the classic Beatles song (and it wasn’t for me although I imagined that it was ha ha!). This recording is only now being made available, and it sounds great and just how I remember it, with Joe being very animated and playing lots of numbers not normally played, and telling funny stories. It was a great night, I had a blast. Audience 8.7 - Believe it or not, few excellent recordings exist of Motley Crue from these early days. This one is actually very decent, with a lot of festival atmosphere, and even though the recording is “distant” it is clear and you get a good round bass, clear and loud guitar, and vocals very clear. Virtually no muck in this tape, you can turn it up loud too because there’s good headroom. Audience 8.4 - A very rare treat, to hear a complete “Preservation” era show. There’s really not a lot of 1973 recording around. This one sounds just fine, while not venturing too far in either direction dynamically, and some lack of clarity down low in the spectrum…but the upper mids and highs seem fine. It’s a good recording that could use your own EQ flavoring to round it into shape. I am happy to have this as I have not heard many, if any, ’73 tapes as good as this. Audience 8.4 - This tape has been recently surfaced and is not bad at all, however it did receive a “refresh” in the form of a re-mastering which boosted the levels a bit after notching out some noisy mids. Audience 7.9/Soundboard 8.8 - A rough and tumble recording for a rough and tumble show. Quite frankly, it’s a perfect match, but obviously when the soundboard portions kick in it is a relief to the ears. The audience tape is one of the better sounding ones of the tour – we’ve all heard the dismal sounding ones and this is by far better. The video footage gives you more appreciation for the tapers efforts, because it just looks like it would have been a miracle to have produced anything remarkable in that venue. My hats off to the tapers! Audience 9.5 - This recording is special, each instrument occupies its own space and has great depth and tone, especially bass which is woody and precise. This recording showcases one really intrinsically valuable characteristic lacking in soundboards – and that is the sense of time and place, distance and depth. In order to get a good feel of a live concert, you sometimes need to have those elements and this tape has them all. Soundboard 9.3 - Fantastic! Now I was not familiar with this band, but I must say, it’s pretty good musically with emphasis on their white-hot lead guitarist. The songs aren’t anything super duper, and their singer isn’t sensational either, but in combination all this works together to become a little more than the individual parts. I like this guitar! I already made that point but it’s worth repeating. Audience 9.3 - Yes, it is that good – and there is, I believe, a soundboard which is the source for the pro shot video but the audience tape is used here because, quite frankly, it is better. You need the atmosphere, you need the sense of space, distance, and vibe that a well-done audience tape can produce. The dynamics are good, the sound is round and warm, lush if you will. My only complaint would be the lack of the crisp highs, but there are highs present just a little rounded off maybe. I am nitpicking! -
Soundboard 9.3 - Not the typical sounding board mix here, it’s got a much more live sounding guitar sound, like mic’d a little further away giving it some spacial quality, and vocals same way, like they are not fed direct into the board. It’s just sounds different than most, not in a bad way, just different. Audience 7.8 - A recent remastering job has brought out much more of the music in this tape. It once circulated for a while in unlistenable quality, which is why you are probably unfamiliar with it. Now, it was rescued from the original reel to reel it was recorded on and spruced up a bit. I can honestly say it is MUCH better! That is all relative of course to the actual sound of this tape – which is average even though it’s clearer than before by far. What is happening is the music is all blended together with only vocals riding over it, to where you get distinct definition on them but everything else is hard to decipher…I mean unless you aren’t counting stadium bass/drum sound. To be completely fair, I listened to most of this show and my ears did adjust, and I started to get more out of it. Audience 8.8 - You know right away that this is a decent recording but it takes a song to find the sweet spot. You keep hoping it opens up more, and it does, and then just sit back and enjoy…until the power failure (hence the title). Things are resolved quickly though and the fun begins again. Audience 8.7 - Recorded with reel to reel tape machine, this is actually very good although it begins with some fluctuations as the tapers settle in. They do an admirable job throughout as the tape stabilizes, they comment here and there but keep it to a minimum, as is the crowd noise. So, it’s a relaxing and enjoyable experience, the band sounding like they are not willing to sell out just yet as their set is not necessarily a top 40 showcase which is good actually. Some hits, but a lot of deep and meaningful music. There is too much ambience (a small club apparently) that gives you the impression they did not even need to run a board feed for this broadcast. Audience 8.8 - A fascinating recording, obviously with high quality microphones because there’s a detail here, especially with drums and bass (managing to realistically capture the depth of bass and the precision of drums). Guitar and to a lesser degree vocals get pushed slightly behind drums and bass, and the keyboards are a little bit behind those. Not to worry, even when the guitar work is almost tough to make out (taper must have been on one side of the stage) you have to remember Gilmour plays a lot of high notes which tend to carry across any hall so they are picked up here. My opinion is that because of the elegance of the way the bass and drums are recorded, when the guitar is really present it makes for something pretty amazing when it all comes together (and it does, just not all the time). Audience 8.4 - While not nearly as spectacular as the Uniondale ’77 (a pro-mixed board btw), this is still an important tape being that it is among the last of the Kath era shows. It’s also not bad at all – in a narrow bandwidth it manages to offer decent separation of instruments and nothing annoying in the frequencies. It’s a solid capture on limited equipment and for that I give the thumbs up to the tapers. Audience 9.6 - What makes this such an excellent recording imho is that the sound is not only really balanced, but mix-wise it is also superb. I mean, the punch of the bass, the crispness of the drums, the airiness of the keys, guitar right in the pocket…fuck what else do you want? It’s just excellence and your ears be the judge but mine are pretty spot on usually so…yeah, get this one. -

It’s got just enough in the middle and bottom to allow you to attenuate the recording to your liking and in that regard you will find yourself going with this one often. It’s not a one and done show at all. GREAT find and appreciated a little bit more being that it’s a Grace Under Pressure tour gig which for some reason there’s not a plethora of excellent recordings from this tour. -

Soundboard 9.5 - A very nice mix, as if done for a proposed live LP. Band is very tight. -
Aud 8.3 - A legendary gig, mainly because of the covers they play for the encore. The tape has a rough beginning but eventually evens out to reveal a surprisingly powerful capture. Most collectors consider this one a must have and from what I understand this source comes from a master tape.
