Soundboard 8.7 - Signs of age on the old tape, it’s not from a master source but you know, it’s early Metallica in soundboard quality! You don’t have to be a metalhead to be able to appreciate what this band did, and listening to a decently mixed board allows you to hear more of the musicality and musicianship. -
Soundboard 9.1 - This is a strong, powerful sounding board with a pretty decent sound mix, although not super clear, but not a muddy mess…somewhere in between the two but leans toward being mostly clear. Soundboard 8.7 - This is the kind of soundboard that was probably meant just for soundman audio reference. It’s fine though, and generally speaking, way better than any audience tape because Metallica, especially in 1986 (I know because I saw them in ’86 and it was the loudest concert I’d ever heard) was so loud there wasn’t any way to get a good capture unless you had excellent gear with mic level adjustment. Audience 8.3 - Interesting recording, it is actually very clean, master quality source, but just fails to contain the massive Metallica sound by a mere inches, and I mean by how close to the mains this seems to be. Collectors who do not have this will LOVE it though, it really gives you a real sense of the loudness and intensity of the band. -

Studio tapes 9.0 - Great to hear this raw, early pre LP stuff because quite frankly it’s fantastic. It’s a different take because there is a real sense of urgency with this recording, like the band know it’s critical to make it happen or they remain bums on the streets of San Francisco. We all know what happened next. Studio Rehearsals 8.8 - Thankfully recorded on something other than a cheap boombox so the quality is there as far as being able to hear everything clear. Vocals are the only thing that does not ring out clearly, but other than that this is gold. This early Metallica is a far cry from what would be in just a few short years. Killing Time Released in '94 via a collaboration between KNAC and Ron McGovney, a number of these demos were debuted during the CLASSIC and ORIGINAL Mandatory Metallica show on 105.5 KNAC. They did a whole week with Ron McGovney in the studio and some of these gems were played on the air. Pat O'Connor, one of the DJ's from the Mandatory show, had his hand in putting out numerous Silver Bootleg CD's and promptly released Sucking My Love between '94 and '95 and then released Things That Should Not Be in late '95. Audience 8.5 - Certainly a mainstay title in the huge catalog of live Metallica boots. Why? Because it is the classic line-up and it sounds reasonably good, even though the twin guitar attack is not clearly defined. Audience 9.1 - A well placed microphone and excellent gear make for a really really nice recording. Revered Italian Rock group of the 1970’s back again and sounding fresh, but some nice old school analog sounds still permeate this performance.
