Audience 8.8 - A good, strong, very clear recording with accompanying audience members who are REALLY getting into it. I found it fun, not annoying at all, because mostly they are quiet while the music plays. The music is great too, and strong performances by everyone. Audience 8.7 - This recording has an overall decent quality to it but somewhere in the mid frequency band there is a small amount of clutter that seems to be more noticeable when heavy bass is played. Otherwise the audio can be remarkably clear, but I don’t think this slight flaw (probably in the mic that was used) ruins the recording; it’s not “glaring”, just there. Re-mastering the audio helped to notch out the offending frequency making it a lot better, so go for it, it’s pretty good. Audience 8.7 - A New York venue hosts a venerable New York artist and the result is a wild evening by all accounts. Audience 8.8 - Some people list this as a soundboard, and if you heard the music right off you might think that too, but the audience applause gives it away as an audience tape, albeit a damn fine one. Plenty of atmosphere, and pretty solid dynamics (lush and deep bass, clear guitar, present vocals). Great version of Astronomy Domine (still performed live during the early part of 1970). Audience 8.7 - Here is a good argument for why we should be open minded towards audience tapes. You NEED some atmosphere! I want to re-experience the show, that means I want to hear it as it happened, not sterilized and filtered. I like board tapes too, but we need a balance. This recording allows me to participate with the audience and be there with them in the moment, and hear the band from out front of the stage. It’s clean, and I hear all the instruments well placed, and reasonably dynamic with just the right amount of headroom so we don’t go pegging the meters. I really like this tape, you will too. Audience 8.8 - Aside from a rough beginning, this tape comes pretty darn close to the excellence of the Toronto ’75 show. It’s got good presence and clarity, with an ample amount of kick where it needs it. I also find the performance very strong, Keith is firing on all eight and the band is really in sync with each other. A keeper! Studio quality 8.8 - A somewhat dated sound here, but clear and clean and straightforward. CCR were very song based as a band but man, they can also free-form jam with the best of them. Audience 8.8 - What this tape shows is that Vanilla Fudge were loud as hell on stage. That Hammond organ, it filled every square molecule of space with massive sound. No other bands at the time were using an organ quite like this! But, it’s fun to hear, if a little dated perhaps. A loud tape that barely stays together at full volume but miraculously manages to capture the event in good form. Vanilla Fudge .... Audience 8.4 Sourced from three different tape recordings, all audience, to make a complete show. Not that bad, but you aren’t listening to this for the high fidelity anyway. This was a celebration, a monumental event, as were pretty much all Stones shows from 1972 on. So, yeah, rowdy crowd, noise, all that and more. But, you know, I listen to these and I still enjoy them a lot. It’s the event that I hear, I really don’t care if I don’t get every detailed note I mean it’s the sloppy Stones isn’t it? Audience 9.1 - Excellent stuff, because you get a clean, well balanced capture with all the best elements of a live atmosphere. Two songs ran into some problems, like a muffled sound, where maybe the taper had to hide the mic, but it recovers. Very enjoyable! Audience 8.8 - A very nice effort, sounds like the taper had pretty good gear. I hear a little bit of distortion in a very specific place in the middle band, not anything to ruin the experience but it is present and sounds like someone made an effort to clean it up in remastering. This is a worthwhile listen. (Can't Seem To) Get A Line On You [4:24] The Sotheby’s Reel are Glyn John’s working tapes when he was the Stones' studio producer during Let it Bleed through the Sticky Fingers sessions, the Stones classic rock period. The tape reel was auctioned some years ago at the famous Sotheby's London auction house and featured some different versions of great songs. Something to point out; "Gimme Shelter" recorded here on 15th March 1969 and featuring Nicky Hopkins on piano, a version of "You Got The Silver" sung by Jagger from 16th February and an early take of “Sister Morphine” almost without piano. But remarkable is also "Loving Cup" that starts with a striking different piano intro and lasts more than 6:30 minutes. Minimal are the differences in the mix for songs like "You Gotta Move", "Dead Flowers" and "Sister Morphine" second version that all resemble the finished "Sticky Fingers" release. On the other side of the coin we have to put the many opening riffs of both "Brown Sugar" and "Bitch" that are tirelessly repeated by an engineer that rolls back and forth the tape looking for a better echo effect, it seems. When the Stones recorded "Brown Sugar" in Muscle Shoals Studios it is said that they tried the song the whole night to get it right, we can feel how they felt while listening to all these false starts. Anyway when the tracks are completed like version number 11 of "Brown Sugar", here comes an early take with Stu on piano and no sax or takes 19 and 20 of "Bitch" where you can hear Jagger ad-libbing over Keith Richards' guitar solo. Last track offered is a primitive version of "Shine A Light" called "(Can’t Seem To) Get A Line On You" that stems from Leon Russell’s session at Olympic Studios in early October 1969 with Jagger on vocals (different words) but this take was officially released in January 1994 on a Leon Russell CD. -
Audience 8.7 - Easily one of the best recordings of the 1970 Euro tour. Mick and Keith really project, the sound is forceful, and even though you do get the rest of the band (and yes, Mick Taylor for sure), they are playing second fiddle to the Glimmer Twins.
