Santa Monica 1974 Audience 8.7 - A tape that takes a song to balance out and adjust but once it gets going is quite good. Some signs of age, but it has held up reasonably well and makes a nice addition to any collection. Be aware there is a tape situation during Dancing With The Moonlit Knight where the sound phases back and forth across the speakers, sounding as if the show was in quadraphonic, and the tape machine struggled but it lasts only a couple of minutes. Not a complete show, we only have 47 minutes but it’s better to have this than nothing at all. Quebec City 1974 Audience 8.9 - A very clear and strong tape that does take a minute to settle in, with tapers carrying on occasionally but eventually chilling out…they don’t annoy too much thank goodness! The performance here is stellar, the audience very responsive. A memorable evening. Fillmore East 1970 Soundboard 8.8 - Clear although not bristling with perfection is a very good early period SMB recording Honolulu 1970 Soundboard 8.8 - A tape that needs one song to dial in the live mix but then gets much better. Still, it’s very good but not sparkling and bright…just good enough to rank pretty high in the category of the formative Steve Miller anthology of concert tapes. San Rafael 1970 Soundboard 9.1 - This is a really nice recording that exemplifies why it is so cool to hear tapes of an artists’ earlier career works before they made it to the big time. This certainly shows the vulnerability and the possibility at the same time. An artist who is still not 100% convincing but clearly has the tool set necessary to advance…and advance he did! Stockholm 1972 SDBRD 9.1 - Some minor tape hiss present but otherwise it’s quite good for its age. It was recorded well, I mean, the sound to me is very organic and that suits this style of music. Princeton 1973 SDBRD 9.3 - First thing you’ll notice is the lively, massive drums, and a good, round, full bass followed by sharp and clear guitar tone. A very very nice board tape! Nottingham 1975 SDBRD 8.7 - A somewhat subdued sound (tape age?) but pretty clear and could maybe just use a little EQ to bring out the frequencies…and also a little volume boost but other than that it’s a good tape that could be great. There’s a lot of communication with the crowd, more so than usual. Atlanta 1977 Audience 8.6 - At times the tape shines (quieter sections) but for the louder parts (most of the concert) the bass overtakes guitar, and the bass is not boomy so it is not an annoying thing it’s more of a live mix thing. Clarity is very good but not great, frequencies are all intact here, the sound can breathe a little, it’s not a bad tape and it is not a great tape…and I think the consensus is that you would benefit from having it in the collection. Louisville 1977 Audience 8.7 - The sound here borders on distortion but manages to stay within a sane level of tolerance due to exceptional re-mastering (which is so difficult, to keep highs and mids but lose clipping, it’s a task I would not want myself). If taper was able to manage his levels, this would have been one of the best audience tapes of all time…you can hear the quality, but yeah, some problems there with the upper level distortion keep it as a very good tape as opposed to extremely great. Still, I have to say this is well worth having. Milwaukee 1977 Audience 8.2 - This is the kind of tape that is hard to get through without needing some major adjusting. I can tell you only that even after careful re-mastering, it is still an average tape with some decent moments but mostly difficult on the ears. It’s saving grace? It’s a brand new discovery, and is only popping up for the first time since it was first recorded. I enjoyed the quieter parts (such as Wish You Were Here, and the acoustic portions of the Pigs suites). Soundboard 8.9 - Kinda cool when you get these board tapes that pan a guitar, and then one other lead instrument to the other side, which in this case is keyboards. I think this allows for an examination of the instrument in question, so you might find yourself listening once and concentrating on guitar, then another time you’ll give drums and keys more attention…and that is why this show might have you coming back several times for more. Audience 8.7 - This is a “realistic” sounding tape, by that I don’t mean it sounds like it was recorded on a Realistic tape machine, rather it sounds like what your ears may have heard had you been at the show sitting towards the back of the hall. Is that bad? Not necessarily, because the tape sounds pleasing to the ears. Good, round, atmospheric…only flaw is the detail is missing. I can’t make out individual band members except the main gultars, bass, drums, and vocals. Other instruments come and go during the show as they get a spotlight on them, but I rate this show as very good because it’s so relaxing and pleasant overall and deserves a real deep dive into its contents. Soundboard 9.6 - Fantastic sound and even better performance here. Black Sabbath Los Angeles 1980 Audience 8.9 - This is a much welcomed recording of perhaps the best post Ozzy era of Black Sabbath. 1980 was an interesting year, Ozzy making classic “solo” albums with his new band and Sabbath beginning a new era with a new singer in Ronnie James Dio and neither the worse for it. This is a great show, in great quality. Black Sabbath Vienna 1980 Audience 8.3 -Unfortunately this recording suffers from many ailments, mainly in the range and dynamics, but what it does offer is a previously uncirculated (and complete) show from Sabbath in Europe during the very crucial 1980 tour with Dio as new front man. This is what I get from this show- Dio is very committed to bringing the audience in to the spectacle…the performance is killer in every respect. The sound quality is not trash, but I want Dio more clear than this because he is really on his game this night. I think this tape belongs in this set because it doesn’t have to be the centerpiece of the set, it offers the collector a new tape of a complete show from 1980 and that is enough for me. Audience 8.7 - A good recording with what seems to be a little middle band compression but not too much. So, it’s smooth low end and louder upper middle and highs but softer middle band, that is not necessarily bad, it’s just lacking in that punch factor. It is though, as stated, a pretty decent recording. Oh, and the last song of the evening is “Don’t Fear The Reaper” so VERY cool to hear another live version of that. You know why BOC fans love the live recordings? Because with 5 guitar players at any given time, you just want to hear what they do with these amazing songs on stage. Mahavishnu Orchestra Central Park 1972 Audience 8.6 - A somewhat percussive recording that has loads of middle band punch making for a sound that contains fierce kinetic energy. The performance is astounding, the recording adds an element of immediacy, with the drums especially sounding like they are placed right next to you. Very cool. Mahavishnu Orchestra Munchen 1972 Professional TV audio 9.3 - This is a nice one, and it is not suffering from TV compression although the “atmosphere” here is somewhat muted as if it was in a studio setting and not live in front of an audience.
