LA 1977 Soundboard 9.4 - THIS is what PUNK should sound like live…loud, brash, and totally in your face – that is exactly what this board tape delivers and I LOVE IT! Get it and you’ll see why. CBGB’s 1977 Audience 9.2 - A pretty clean recording, which is surprising to me as this is a punk band in a small club at full volume (presumably). So, either taper is affiliated with the club and set up somewhere with some good equipment or it’s a fan who just knew what he was doing and nailed it. I am going with the former. Audience 8.6 - A very early tape featuring the bands original guitarist. For those who have not heard anything like this before, well, it does not sound like the Police as we know them, it’s still good, but different. To my ears, the guitarist does not have the polish we have come to expect from this band, but he’s got quite a lot of spit! -
Soundboard 9.3 - There are quite a few board tapes from this period, so which ones do you get? After listening to this one, I really think it’s one of the ones to get. Great sound, but a really strong performance (when did they not?) too.

I also found myself really enjoying the songs, since I was only very familiar with their evergreen hit “Green Grass and High Tides”. I saw these guys in 1980 and they were great but I was so young I just can’t remember the songs. Released by the reformed band in 2013 in a very limited run on CD-R, this is actually that same title re-worked. The audio is the same but the package is expanded, the original was a very simple, black and white 4 panel sheet with nothing printed inside and the disc placed in without any protection. It was a CD-R burn in fact, and basically my understanding was it wasn't even sold but handed out to people, family, friends, fans, etc. Not even sure how many they made, probably less than 1,000 for sure. They are all gone now, but this re-worked version supersedes that with the upgraded packaging.- 99th Floor Part 2

Audience 8.3 - Don’t let the rating fool you, this is an exciting tape! What lowers the rating is just a non-biased appraisal of the sonic limitations of the tape which is mainly the upper end distortion due to volume. It’s a small club and a loud band, and probably a consumer grade cassette recorder…but, it’s actually not that bad and delivers a real exciting vibe. I can tell you this for sure – you will be sucked into this recording and will completely get it, it’s a charming document of a long forgotten time and place. Soundboard 9.3 - This is, for me, a real revelation. I never knew anything of this band outside of their lone smash hit “My Sharona”, which incidentally happens to hearken me back to a very specific time and place of my youth when this song blasted from every radio every 10 minutes. Listening to this show, I am stunned at how excellent the band is, and how good ALL of the songs are. How they remained pigeonholed and forgotten as another 1 hit wonder it just amazes me because they should have been more than that. Audience 8.4 - A decent old (and by old I mean it sounds…old) tape that doesn’t have extreme highs or lows but is pretty consistent and clear enough to hear everything. The highlight to any Kinks tape of this vintage is the set list, they had some of their best songs ever and were playing all of them. Audience 8.5/8.4 - Both of these recordings are very good in not only the general fidelity but they also seem to be low gen. They are both clear and not muddy, although one is slightly clearer in the middle frequency. It seems as though these shows have been worked on with some audio tools, but with a light touch, it is greatly appreciated by these ears! Both shows are very worthwhile, and being the period before the more extravagant sets, kind of easier to sit through. There is some minor variance in the first disc being that is taken from four different sources, but consistently good. The exact date of the last disc (the rehearsals) is unknown but believed to be ’93 although people say it can be as early as 1989 also. I’ll let the experts decide but I have gone with the general wisdom of it being from ’93. Audience 8.7 - This is a decent tape that delivers some sense of the venue and the power of the band in a live setting, it's not "relaxed" sounding but definitely hard rock music at volume...but that being said there is some slight harmonic distortion somewhere in the upper mid band range, and if you had to choose where your live recording suffered, it would be here because it doesn't do as much damage to the sound taken as a whole as you might suppose. It's still a really good recording...with limitations. Soundboard 9.3 - A decent but kind of middle rangey sound, but in this case I like it because it gives the Kinks a more punkish sound. This material is also kind of punkish so the delivery and the sound of the recording itself convinces you that this band wanted to impart the punk attitude. Some of the songs are definitely not punkish but we know it’s not all encompassing, just generally I think The Kinks liked the punk ethos. I mean, they play a song called “Prince Of The Punks” so what does that tell you? Audience 9.5 - Technically speaking, you could argue with my rating, but a rating must not only represent sonic clarity but also overall enjoyability of a show/recording. This one rates as high as I can allow for both excellence and all the other aspects of what makes a tape really great. -
Audience 9.3 - Hard to dispute the excellence of this recording. The only downside is that not only does it capture the happenings on stage extremely well, it also captures the audience close to the mic…but, that seems to add excitement so we let it slide. -
