Disc 1 Pittsburgh 1974 Audience 8.5 A rather middle of the road tape that does not offend the ears, but does not offer great separation of instruments. It’s not that it is real muddy either, it’s just that Sabbath were very loud, and unless you were seated ideally for taping, and, if your taping gear was high quality, you “might” get a very good recording of this band. That being said, I have heard much worse, and this is a new tape to circulation. Some good jams, Ozzy is very excited this night. Disc 2 Niagara Falls 1978 Audience 8.7 A bit better than the previous disc in this set, it offers better separation of instruments and more dynamics. In parts, it’s actually even better than the 8.7 rating. A rare tape, it offers something to collectors and features complete versions of the Technical Ecstasy songs which is a big plus. Disc 3 Live Rehearsals and Unknown Live 1979-80 Soundboard 9.8 Two very cool pieces that may have fallen through the cracks for most collectors but thankfully included in this Lost Recordings set. Both are worth repeated listening. Soundboard 9.6 - A great sound happening here, but what I really love most about it is the brassy, killer bass. Obviously it’s everything, it’s all great, but Prince, even being mainly onto a funky, keyboard, drum, bass approach on this tour (guitar is present in places just not emphasized) which might not be everyone’s cup of tea, still is able to engage this old rock and roller. Studio Quality 9.7 - Another fantastic collection of stuff Prince did in his studio and on air with disc 2 being the unreleased Milk and Honey album with Tamar.. What struck me about this particular set is right off the bat, the first track on disc one just blew me away. It’s an extended remix of Computer Blue with the sickest guitar, a real grinding, psychedelic and metallic tone that he squeezes to maximum effect and doesn’t want it to end. Neither did I!! Studio Quality 9.7 - A lot of collectors may think they are getting the same stuff over and over again in a different package but with the Prince studio collections you really are getting something different, but that might just mean alternate takes, mixes, or a different session with different players. Prince did like to experiment a lot and might want to try a song a hundred different ways before he was satisfied, similar maybe to Jimi Hendrix. I always find something to enjoy and always end up admiring Prince more and more after each listen…which is why I keep offering these titles because it lets me listen to even more Prince! Audience 8.4 - Buried in a closet for decades this important document has finally surfaced. It’s, to my ears, slightly better than the next oldest live document which I believe is the Music Machine gig. The tape itself is not as bad as you’d imagine and that could be due to the diligent re-mastering that was done. The sound is not as murky and indecipherable as a lot of the other 1980 tapes. This can be appreciated, I mean, this is May of 1980 the band had yet to break open and even though they had a hardcore following, was not known outside of UK in any substantive sense. If you were a fan of Iron Maiden in these times, it’s akin to investing money in Google stock when it was first offered. Why would you? …maybe because you liked what they were doing and had a hunch. Audience 9.1 - This show is divided into two sets, with both sounding similar but the 1st set is just a touch rougher in the sense that I hear a tiny bit of channel overload (not distorted!) and less clarity (but not harmfully so) than the 2nd set. Overall, both are very well recorded and I would imagine set 2 was broadcast as this was typical around this time and other Rosyln, NY. “My Father’s Place” shows were indeed broadcast on local FM radio. So, while it seems Set 2 is the better audio (fractionally), I would say it was recorded for broadcast and this is the pre-broadcast tape recorded from the audience with open mics…yes? No? Maybe so? I have no idea…it’s really good but not radio station broadcast good so maybe this show was never recorded for broadcast at all. Audience 8.7 - Not too bad for 1972, this tape has some nice energy, and not to say it doesn’t have limitations, but it seems to deliver a lot more than the expectation. You have to accept that the hall is a touch echoey, or at least the guitar seems to bounce off the wall to give a very short reverb effect. It’s not a distraction at all, in fact it is exactly how it sounded at the show – the recording is very accurate. The tape itself that was made from the broadcast is a little aged it seems but holds up pretty well. It’s a solid old tape, just could use a little brightening up. Audience 8.2/Studio 9.5 - OK, what we have here is both a blessing and a curse. How to begin? It’s not the best sounding tape, but, it’s perhaps one of the most important and illuminating tapes to have surfaced in a long time. I’d been collecting Motley Crue for some time (because they have a special place in my early teenage years) and had always thought 1982 was the earliest known recordings. Should this even be in anyone’s collection? Considering the revelation it was to me, hearing them sound so confident and amazing as early as this, yes I think it belongs in every collection. It sounds pretty rough, but not rough enough to dismiss. A LOT of work went into the re-mastering to deliver something that started off unlistenable and now can be considered a “good” audience tape. Small club, loud AF band, sub-par taping gear. Why were tapers there recording at all? Who was Motley Crue in 1981? By the sound of it, they were already hot stuff on the scene. Audience 8.5 - I would designate this recording as a reference recording – what was going on in 1973? That’s what this tape is, an old newspaper featuring a back story on this local band. Very dated…sound quality is marginal but not in a miserable, muddy, dogshit kind of way. It’s listenable and fun, like I said it is a good reference and may guide you towards other NYD tapes out there. I know I was certainly intrigued enough to seek out other recordings. Audience 8.8 - Here we have two concerts in very good quality that show a band undeniably at the peak, a peak that seemed to stretch out for a VERY long time I might add, but a creative peak that gave audiences a lot to digest musically. The quality of this tape is pretty decent but I give it a knock in the rating (although 8.8 is still high) because I got too much emphasis on an upper mid frequency that didn’t rub me the right way and this is a subjective analysis. The tape allows plenty of information in that you get pretty much everything, it’s clear, and the content is worth the price of admission. I am making a subjective observation but I feel the taper had done an amazing job and it would have gotten a 9.4 if the mic he used delivered more dynamics and a wider sound-field. Picky picky picky! Audience 8.7 - A rare tape of the 1974 tour, you gotta grab these whenever they appear because unfortunately there are precious few. This one does not disappoint in the quality dept. despite being pretty friggin’ loud and close to taper…almost crosses over the line pegging the meters into distortion but it doesn’t…it would have been a total loss if it had. Audience 8.8 - This came as a total surprise as I never knew it existed…and man, I gotta tell ya this is f’kin AWESOME! This is a band that is crucial to the burgeoning British punk movement but they owe more to the MC5 than the Sex Pistols. This one off show features the band going under the moniker The Doomed because they have a certain Lemmy Kilmister on bass. What a high energy, totally wild and crazy fun gig too! Good sound quality, thankfully! Great setlist with a nice handful of covers that highlight their influences (they even do Silver Machine from Hawkwind!). Audience 8.7 - I had a hard time determining whether it was the recording or the PA that caused this tape to fall below the usually excellent quality recordings coming out of the Inglewood Forum around this same time. It’s not terrible; the main issue was an overcrowding of the middle bandwidth. So you get plenty of bottom end and soaring high end (where most guitar leads and vocals, and yes, cymbals are clear) but a lack of separation in that crucial middle. That leaves us with a tape clearly made on decent gear, somewhere in the middle of the venue it sounds like, and likely a master source (zero tape noise), but just not delivering the kind of clarity you would want when you are trying to hear the magical guitar interplay, especially Joe Walsh who just has his own musicality that perks your ears up. Still, a good tape that is worthy of exploration and much appreciated being from that wonderful line-up that featured perennial fave Joe Walsh. Audience 9.4 - A wonderful, warm, full bodied recording that beckons you in from the first note. Say what you will about Rod Stewart but his voice works with this stuff, and even here in 1982 as long as you can’t see him you can appreciate the rock and roll pedigree he brings to the stage. Yeah, I was rather turned off by his image for quite some time, but hearing him live you just find a way to look past that. Audience 9.7 - Contrary to what you initially would have thought about Prince audience recordings, that the people there to see him aren’t exactly the type you would think would be overly concerned about getting an excellent capture…sure I am profiling here but it’s true - you expect this crowd is mainly there to bump and grind with each other and party like it’s 1999 or something. Now, I have to say after listening to many Prince audience recordings I come away as being impressed for the most part. This tape confirms what I now believe, that Prince bootleggers actually give a shit about the quality of the sound recordings they make. I LOVE the sound and feel of this tape…hands down I put this up against ANY soundboard you want to throw at me. This has ELECTRICITY and you don’t get that out of line recordings. Various Sources 8.5/10 - So this is, as the title suggests, a collection of recordings made during this tour but the kicker is that the songs are all ones that were one-off’s (with a couple of exceptions). I found that even the worst track (the final track in the set) was not as bad as they made it seem in the liner notes. Still, when compared to some of the truly outstanding ones in the set, yes maybe it really paled in comparison but there’s only two “marginal” tracks here and they aren’t totally abhorrent. This was a very interesting listen for me personally. Audience 9.1 - God bless the tapers for this one! What a great show it is, and really I can’t recommend it highly enough because it’s TOTALLY immersive, I mean, sure it’s not 100% perfect but in a way it’s as good as you would hope. It’s a fun experience to hear this man just at the top of his game like this with a band that doesn’t miss a thing, ever. Audience 8.9 - A recording that seems to be, if I had to guess, somewhere mid crowd but manages to bring you closer to the action. Great separation of instruments and a clear capture with zero tape noise so you can almost hear the pot smoke swirling above your head ha ha! But, this is quite good, and mesmerizing, so have a great trip as you put your time machine headphones on and set it to Seattle in ’76. Audience 8.9 - A nice recording job in that you really hear the music as clear as can be but also some atmosphere to let you know where you are at. It’s surprising really to hear how an amateur audience tape from ’74 can feature such nice depth, this is not a brittle or thin recording, there’s some meat to this one. Nice! Broadcasts 8.8/9.4 - A little variation depending on the source of the recording in question (all fully annotated in the notes), what you get here is a collection of broadcasts over the air during 1969 and 1970 when music was in full change mode and experimentation and blending of genres was all the rage. Blodwyn Pig certainly has to be included in that product description with their jazz-tinged hard rock akin to Jethro Tull without flute (substitute sax instead). Makes sense, since Mick Abrahams helped define Tull’s sound in the beginning days. This is great stuff though and is HIGHLY recommended.
