Audience 8.8 - A great atmospheric recording – I think I have figured it out though – so people used to go to concerts and party, with the musician on stage performing just an excuse to be with hundreds of other pot smoking, over-hyped hippies. What I am trying to say is that the audience is a little too into it…in my opinion. Great show though. This recording has been available for years now but this is the first time the master reels have ever been properly digitized. This show captures Neil Young and his backing band The Stray Gators touring in support of his Time Fades Away album. This is a good show but Neil is plagued with guitar problems and spends about a quarter of show tuning his guitar. Also of note David Crosby and Graham Nash join Neil onstage for Old Man.

Audience 9.1 - A recording that delivers everything that you want, especially the guitar tone which is simply glorious. You would be forgiven if you thought “hey am I listening to the Stones right now?” but remember, it was The Stones that sounded like Mick Taylor not the other way around! Great stuff! Audience 8.2/8.6 - The recording starts out borderline, probably due to taper position…but hang in there because midway through the 4th song it improves and becomes a more interesting document because of it, First of all, it’s literally Bob Seger in the peak of his powers with a handful of chart toppers to display proudly. Normally that would not move me, but Bob Seger is old school, he delivers the goods even if his songs are considered “mainstream”, I mean, its good rock and roll no matter what. I love this document for many reasons. Audience 8.5/8.7 - Both tapes are not well known, and are pre-Close To The Edge making them quite interesting to the fans of early period Yes. Both tapes sound pretty good, with the nod going to Tucson for just that little bit of clarity it has overall. There’s enough dynamics, atmosphere, and clarity to allow the listener to settle in to each show and appreciate the details (great ripping Hammond work by Wakeman throughout). Audience 9.2 - Amazing recording! Not that it is perfect, in fact, the audio mix is off, but it is off in a spectacular way. So, it’s basically guitar, I mean, plugged directly into your brain and proceeding to torch your brain cells until they are dry spots on the carpet. Yeah, it’s like that, but don’t worry if you do not hear vocals perfectly, or bass is too low, or drums are not pounding because while all that is here, it is predominately the Johnny Winter and his hypnotizing psychedelic blues at maximum volume show. Audience 8.2 - A somewhat average tape that is brand new to circulation and captures a good time for Lou when he had some great songs and great players with him. Plus side of the recording is that it is low gen and clear enough to hear the band although keyboards are quite behind in the stage mix. Lou is more prominent, with bass and guitar next. A good tape for a lo-fi cassette recorder snuck into the venue in the mid 70’s. Audience 8.3 - This recording has you right in the thick of things. Equally enjoying both the electric excitement of the Kinks and the amazing responses from the audience. Quality is a little above average but the instruments are clear and not muddy. The vocals are very clear, which is important because Ray commands the show. This show has been written about, and not just for the incident involving Ray falling into the amps during Apeman. One to remember! The Kinks Philharmonic Hall, New York, NY March 30, 1971 Band line-up (personnel : May 1970 - November 1976) Ray Davies - lead vocals, rhythm guitar Dave Davies - lead guitar, backup vocals John Dalton - bass guitar, backup vocals Mick Avory - drums, percussion John Gosling - keyboards Total Time = 73:37 Set list 01 Intro 02 Till the End of the Day 03 Brainwashed 04 You're Looking Fine 05 Apeman 06 Waterloo Sunset 07 Sunny Afternoon 08 Give My Love To Rose 09 Get Back In Line 10 A Pub With No Beer 11 Lola 12 Louise -- tape flip -- 13 Big Sky 14 Milk Cow Blues 15 See My Friends 16 Powerman 17 One Night With You 18 You Are My Sunshine 19 You Really Got Me 20 All Day & All of the Night 21 Top of the Pops The Kinks play at Lincoln Center's prestigious Philharmonic Hall (later renamed Avery Fisher Hall). In contrast to the elegance of the hall, Ray Davies' spontaneous, campy, outrageous, sometimes disoriented performance elicits a huge crowd response. When he falls into a bank of amplifiers (brother Dave kindly steps aside when he sees Ray toppling), members of the audience leap on stage to finish the song "Apeman" for Ray. By all accounts it is a night to remember.

Soundboard 9.4 - Minor hiss present in quiet passages but does not impact any music. Audience 8.3 - Don’t let the rating fool you, this is an exciting tape! What lowers the rating is just a non-biased appraisal of the sonic limitations of the tape which is mainly the upper end distortion due to volume. It’s a small club and a loud band, and probably a consumer grade cassette recorder…but, it’s actually not that bad and delivers a real exciting vibe. I can tell you this for sure – you will be sucked into this recording and will completely get it, it’s a charming document of a long forgotten time and place. Soundboard 9.3 - A very well traveled tape, seeing release as a video, as well as countless boot CD’s. The video was so-so, the audio has always been great. The show itself, not their best, and not their worst. Is it essential? It’s a great sounding ’76 board tape (the closing gig of the tour in Europe) so, my thought is that it should be somewhat necessary in the collection. Soundboard 9.6 - This tour was well documented with a plethora of expertly recorded board tapes. This is no exception, the quality, both in terms of sound and mix, is worthy of official release. It’s weird because Joe also sang “Birthday” the classic Beatles song (and it wasn’t for me although I imagined that it was ha ha!). Audience 8.7 - Believe it or not, few excellent recordings exist of Motley Crue from these early days. This one is actually very decent, with a lot of festival atmosphere, and even though the recording is “distant” it is clear and you get a good round bass, clear and loud guitar, and vocals very clear. Virtually no muck in this tape, you can turn it up loud too because there’s good headroom. At the end of their set, Nikki throws his bass into the crowd and it lands on a fan named Stu Taylor, smashing his glasses and cutting his head open. A number of people take the guitar to the side of the stage to smash it up and share out the pieces.

Audience 8.4 - A barn-burner gig and maybe one of the best of the tour (recorded, anyway) with some unbelievable jamming. The audio is decent, some mid band clutter was equalized to allow less noise and more music to permeate your space. I think that made the difference with this tape. It’s worth getting and will impress you even more than you might already have been with these guys. Always gave their best. Audience 7.9/Soundboard 8.8 - A rough and tumble recording for a rough and tumble show. Quite frankly, it’s a perfect match, but obviously when the soundboard portions kick in it is a relief to the ears. The audience tape is one of the better sounding ones of the tour – we’ve all heard the dismal sounding ones and this is by far better. The video footage gives you more appreciation for the tapers efforts, because it just looks like it would have been a miracle to have produced anything remarkable in that venue. My hats off to the tapers!
