Audience 8.8 - A surprisingly great tape! Very wide spectrum and a solid, in the pocket mix. Great show too! -
Soudboard 9.7 - Beautiful fullness of sound! Saweet! -
Soundboard 9.6 - Great live mix, like it was recorded for a release. Drums are tight, guitar is slamming, vocals perfect. -
Pro FM Broadcast 9.6 - I really like the guitar tone here, a bit more grit, sounds less like a mega-hit stadium band and more like a very talented jam band. -
Soundboard 8.8 - A little hiss, some compression (not too much), and a rather dry sound (a pure board feed, no crowd noise present). -
Pro Video Source 8.5 - These sound like they were taken from video tape sources and have the telltale compression characteristics. These are actually several different broadcasts during the year 1976, with the final four tracks coming from UC Santa Barbara, which is also the best sounding of the batch. -

Audience 8.2 - Very live, with that telltale large hall reverb but smoking hot show and audio is real good and very electric. -
Audience 8.7 - A little on the upper midrange/high side but VERY clean and crisp with very pronounced and clear vocals especially. Really great! -
Soundboard 8.8 - Probably radio broadcast, very strong and dynamic if just a tad dated sounding. -

FM Radio Broadcast 8.7 - Pretty rocking debut, and even though the audio quality is not perfect (although it is great) I really like the rawness and band interplay of their early gigs. -

Audience 9.0 - Rated very high for the excellent mid range punch where the guitar tone is magical. -
Audience 9.0 and Audience 8.6 - The Fillmore West show is a revelation. This has been floating around mislabeled as Winterland 69, and in horrible quality. This is the actual venue, and comes from the original master and sounds incredible! The Boston show is also real nice sounding, with an immediate sound, with some minor tape artifacts present. A great two-fer here, vintage ’69. Free never sounded so good! -
Audience 8.6 - A very clear, surprisingly so, open air recording made with what sounds like really decent gear. Every now and then the volume fluctuates but it sounds to me like they are fiddling with the levels, it usually gets back up to proper levels after a second or two and it’s not on every song. -
FM Radio Broadcast 9.2 -
Soundboard 9.7 - A deft touch is what it took to make such a pleasant mix. Everything is where it should be, and the overall sound is something you might find on officially released records. Top shelf. -

Audience 7.5 - Clear but lacking depth (Early Show). -
Audience 8.3 - Decent recording that has some warmth to it. -
Audience 8.4 - One of the better early Italian shows, bass maybe pushing hard, but it’s clear and energetic. Lovely stuff! -

Audience 7.0 - Compressed sound, but it’s a killer show and the first time Gabriel wears the fox costume on stage. Historic. -
Audience 7.6 - This tape is very clear but has low levels and is somewhat narrow in bandwidth. By turning the volume up, and adding some personal touches on EQ you can lift the experience to a little higher level. -

Audience 7.4 - My oh my what a difference technology makes! I remember in the early days of my collecting music, and I mean on cassette tapes mind you, this show was one that I just would not even listen to out of curiosity. It was “file under abysmal” and that was it. Now, this new transfer from the master, and a prudent digital re-mastering has brought out actual music here! In fact, it’s not even that horrendous and you will actually listen to it. One brief moment really struck me, and it was the last fading seconds of the recording when you hear the enthusiastic shouts from the audience as the intense sounding Hammond organ notes fade out. This reminded me of just how powerful a Genesis show was in 1972, and we do not appreciate that because there are no analog recordings that can accurately reproduce that intense sound. We have to use a little imagination, but sometimes we do catch glimpses of it.
