• Soundboard 8.9 - A good one, if slightly below the expectations of perfection you might be anticipating with a mid 70’s board tape. Occasional phasing, and sometimes a little volume fading as the sound man adjusts things on the fly but it’s greatness is derived from the spectacularly cohesive performance by all the musicians and the sometimes disparagingly different styles they run through in the set.
  • Studio Quality 9.4 As expected, these are from studios sessions and having been remastered (to freshen the old tapes up), it sounds quite good. The material sounds a bit dated though, I mean I know it is Bowie but it’s probably not his best stuff in my opinion…some people like it though. David Bowie - Sigma Sound 1974   1.   • Soundboard  9.0 - Sounds kind of thin and compressed to me but it is perfectly clear being a modern sdbrd. Features songs with Nine Inch Nails, and a lot of good bonus material. All in all a very good CD!
  • Pro Studio and Live 9.0 - Consistent, with some obvious age related issues present on some cuts but overall pretty much in the pocket.
  • Audience 6.9 - Bowie clearly audible above the din. Not great separation of instruments, with some minor analog tape saturation at full volume.
  • Audience  7.3 -  Pretty clear with a bit of hall space that gives it some atmosphere. Enjoyable!
  • Audience  9.6 - Marvelous recording captures every nuance in pristine, clear, full quality.
  • Audience 8.9 - A recording that seems to “rise above” the din because literally it sounds like the mic was over the crowd. It makes for a more immersive experience, and the fact that the dynamics are good and the sound is clear…well it just goes to prove once again that a well made audience tape is more than welcome in any real live music collection.

  • Audience 8.4 - Simply has to be one of the best audience tapes of the time. So, it isn’t perfect but I consider this to be a must have due to how clear, and really nice fat bottom end without boominess. Lovely!

  • Audience  7.7 - A great period for Deep Purple, this is probably their peak in a lot ways. The recording here is decent, vocals a little back, some overload at times, but you don’t miss anything really all the music is there and you can pick up just about everything on stage. I like it, I think you will too.

  • Audience 7.7 - The rating does nothing to express the magnitude of intensity that this show has. It gives you a very real sense of how completely bombastic and insanely loud Deep Purple were at this time. Incredible on many levels, so use this to show your kids how we rocked back in the day. Amazing!
  • Audience 9.3 - Technically the sonic quality here is more likely an 8.9 but this tape gets a MAJOR boost because, quite simply, it’s one of the most incredible, insane, unbelievable things Deep Purple I have ever experienced.   • CD 1 & 2 - Audience  8.9 - Very strong presence, taper had great seats and knew how to operate his levels, so, have fun because the band never sounded better! CD 3 & 4 - This show received a nice remastering which helped bring the middle up and cut out a lot of the tape hiss so what you get now is a smoother sound, and good punch in the mids while offering great solid kick drum, vocals, and guitar with keys being placed perfectly in accompaniment. Just get past the first song where taper finds his position and you are good to go.
  • Audience  7.8 - Crowded a bit in the middle, but not bad enough to lose any one instrument. In fact, the guitar and bass complement each other in the mix like a battle of giants. I will say also that the performance itself is a real jam fest, with everyone shining bright. I like this one a lot.
  • Audience 6.8 - Very thin, but a low gen tape used here so it is pretty clear and guitar is the most present along with Ian and a pretty prominent kick drum too. The show is marvelous wish it sounded better.
  • Audience 8.4  - I think the draw is, when you are dealing with these old audience tapes that don’t have very wide dynamic range, is that as long as you get a solid guitar, and reasonable vocals, it’s going to appeal to collectors because what they want is the performance mainly – and I tend to agree because this is after all the peak period for the band. You can hear guitar, vocals, and keys in pretty decent clarity and forceful too – I see the value in this recording, a little rough around the edges when band is at full flight due to limitations with the recorder, but let me tell you I hung around, listened to the whole thing, and came away satisfied.   • Audience 7.3 - 8.0 - Gets better as the show progresses. Let me just say this – I think this show is hotter than the officially released Live album! Maybe because when a band knows they are being recorded, they are less “free” in their playing. I don’t know but this show is off the hook jamming, wish it sounded a little better but even so I am happy to get to hear it.
  • Soundboard 9.3 - OK, let me explain why the high rating here. Technically speaking, the actual audio quality is more like 8.8 to be honest…but this tape is so MUCH more than that and deserves a super high rating because of it. Let me explain: First of all, the audio is good enough to get excellent separation of instruments, that allows you to hear the detail of the guitar and drums, with a driving keyboard and clear vocals…and that is important because a certain new vocalist is hoping to impress in front of a London audience – and he does, they ALL do in a major way especially Blackmore. See, Richie is one of those guitarists that really goes for it, and sometimes it works and sometimes he is probably not inspired as much so it falls a little flat…not here! He’s simply brilliant and when I hear him like this I remember to include him on my all time greatest guitarists list ha ha!  This rating is for the spectacular event this gig is, and how happy we should be to hear it clearly.   • Audience 7.8 - The best of the tour and in fact Tommy is very cohesive here. A must for fans of DP and Tommy Bolin.
  • Audience 7.7 - This sounds way better than I remember it from years ago, not to say it is marvelous, but what I can tell you is that Ian and Jon are absolute beasts here, the intensity is off the charts folks. Because of where the sound spectrum is (focuses on vocals and keys) you get the idea maybe you won’t hear Ritchie but when he solos the guitar is riding the top of everything which is a relief. So, all in all a spectacular show, mediocre recording that sounds better than it ever has. I consider this along with the Hiroshima gig of the same year to be essential for real fans due to the insane levels of intensity present.

  • Soundboard 9.5 - So I haven’t kept up with this band since Steve Morse joined. I’ve always loved them, but they just fell off my radar. It was with great pleasure that I reacquainted myself with them as I reviewed this show. It’s multi-layered, multi-dimensional music with some resemblance to the old band if Ritchie traded places with his Southern fried twin brother!  I mean, it works, don’t get me wrong – but it can fool you because it’s not Ritchie’s band by any stretch. I like this one maybe a little better to be honest. This is a “deeper” Deep Purple actually, and the orchestra behind them makes it that much more interesting, if sometimes a little bit “cabaret” but it still rocks when it has to and the guitar work by Morse is impeccable.   • Soundboard 9.2 - I think this right here is as good as it will get to a complete Tommy Bolin Purple gig in soundboard quality and, here’s the important thing, reasonably cohesive playing. To be honest, after listening to this, it’s kind of apparent that Deep Purple was probably not the best vehicle for Tommy’s talents. Not that he can’t play, but that Deep Purple’s music was too one dimensional. That being said it is still pretty good despite the erratic mix – sometimes guitar is up front and sometimes it is buried.   • Audience 6.8 - Audio is Not very good but man, what a bummer because this is one of the absolute best performances I think I have ever heard. Totally intense and really good improv jams that do not bore you to tears. Wish it was better – but on the plus side you get a rather clear Richie on guitar. Quieter passages are rather decent. The main problem here is that everything is squeezed into a narrow bandwidth. Must have for hardcore fans for the ferociousness of the performance.
  • Audience 7.9 - It’s hard give this a below 8 rating because of technical limitations of the recorder (a touch of high end distortion) because it is a very exciting and highly amped show captured quite well for the primitive hear that must have been used. I can hear everything and guitar is loud and up front. The distortion present is not a killer, it’s there but it is as unobtrusive as distortion can be. A fun recording, puts you right there.

In excellent, mind-bending sonic POWER – the kick drum literally will kick your skull in – the crowd extending their pleasure with every note.  For those only familiar with their two radio staples, you will most certainly want to re-examine this band’s output after hearing this. I know I did! Deep Purple Radio City Music Hall 1976 Audience 9.1 - This is a long awaited tape for many people who craved to hear the late Tommy Bolin with the band in at least above average quality.
