Soundboard 9.8 - What makes this recording rate so highly is the professionalism all around – that means the band first for putting in the sparkling performance (and that’s even more succinct here with the unusual line-up and changing sound of Tull), and then the sound engineer for so deftly mixing and preserving this recording. I mean, it’s not just a board tape where you pop in the cassette and capture whatever sound you’ve dialed in for the evening, this is a well manicured mix that seemingly must have been made with a view towards a release because it is just too good, too perfectly balanced to be just a house mix. Studio Quality 9.3 - This seems to be a real early example of the Steve Perry era and as such presents an interesting snapshot of the band in transition…yet still retains most of their fiery 70’s guitar-centric jamming quality. Soundboard 9.3 - Very smooth, dynamic, elegant sounding tape here. Just a tiny bit of tape hiss when things are quieter, but this tape is a joy to listen to and the band is just firing on all cylinders. Audience 8.7 - Here is the big question: Was this broadcast over the air? If it was, I’d find it odd that they recorded the show from the audience, I mean, in bootleg fashion as it sounds like a bona fide audience bootleg tape! It’s decent enough though, taken from what seems like the back of the room so it gets the full PA sound projecting out, including audience reaction, so it is somewhat immersive. You definitely get a sense of the room that’s for sure. I think this recording is a raucous good time if nothing else and shows the band very comfortable with the music and their place in rock and roll. FM Broadcast 9.7- Brilliant sound, and so nice to have this because you get the full on experience with a great band and the great back up vocals of Ruby Starr (I honestly would not have minded at all for her to be the singer and Jim the washboard player and back up singer!). Soundboard 8.7 - The mix here tends to lean on a darker side (meaning more low end but not boomy) with guitar being clear enough but not the prominent instrument which is fine as this is totally all about ensemble and vastly different than anything he was doing with Deep Purple. That in itself makes this kind of odd, if he’s touring with Deep Purple yet managed to play some gigs with other people and sound so totally different musically, it’s really a zig zag routine here as the music is so all over the place in a good way. Audience 8.7 A real surprise here because when I first came across this one I assumed it would be crap. Why had I not heard of it before if it was good? Well, sometimes stuff just slips through the cracks I guess. Anyway what I am saying is that this is quite good, I began listening and made it through to the end and was thinking “this is a real find”. Van Halen Market Square Arena Indianapolis, IN. Soundboard 8.8 - A welcomed board tape that I knew nothing of previously before discovering it. It’s fine, it’s not a “pristine” or sterile tape by any means and it does sound…dated a bit but it’s the mighty ‘Halen in all their splendor and it’s great! Van Halen 1979-10-02 Tucson, Az. Audience 8.8 - This is an interesting recording because while the guitar is very close and defined, the rest of the band is kind of floating above you. It’s as if the taper’s mic was placed in front of Jeff’s guitar cab and at the same time he was able to capture the rest of the sound through the main P.A. so it’s kind of strange. It’s decent though, it’s a good capture just a strange placement of instruments but I really love being able to soak JB in when he’s having a great night as he is here Beck, Bogert, & Appice Shi-Kokaido Nagoya, Japan May 16, 1973 Disc One 01 - Superstition 02 - Livin' Alone - I'm So Proud 03 - Lady 04 - Morning Dew - Drum Solo 05 - Sweet Sweet Surrender 06 - Lose Myself With You - Bass Solo Disc Two 07 - Black Cat Moan 08 - Why Should I Care 01 - Goin' Down - Jeff's Boogie 02 - Oleo - Boogie 03 - Plynth - Shotgun Jeff Beck - guitar, vocals Tim Bogert - bass, vocals Carmine Appice - drums, vocals

Audience 8.9 - The great thing about this band is that most times a relatively normal tape machine can capture them cleanly and a really good machine captures them gloriously. This is a local product (Houston) and dates from 1998 (with one track from 1995) and perfectly encapsulates the odd effect of the what your perception is of music after the passage of enough time. For instance, I remember this band from the time and considered them just another local "inner loop" grunge band...but hearing this CD they do not categorize so easily there. I find this to be an odd mixture of things that all sort of make me uncomfortable in a creepy way. Some people like that sort of thing though. Anyway, musically it's got some interesting stuff going on and might be worth checking out at this attractive price. CD is SEALED.

Described as "First Wave Of California Metal" this band was one of the earliest progenitors of the genre. There had to be a first and sometimes that means you end up forgotten while others swoop in behind you. Thankfully this UK label, PROGAOR, has been reissuing a lot of this cool underground stuff. CD is new, never played.
