Audience 8.8 - Here we have two concerts in very good quality that show a band undeniably at the peak, a peak that seemed to stretch out for a VERY long time I might add, but a creative peak that gave audiences a lot to digest musically. The quality of this tape is pretty decent but I give it a knock in the rating (although 8.8 is still high) because I got too much emphasis on an upper mid frequency that didn’t rub me the right way and this is a subjective analysis. The tape allows plenty of information in that you get pretty much everything, it’s clear, and the content is worth the price of admission. I am making a subjective observation but I feel the taper had done an amazing job and it would have gotten a 9.4 if the mic he used delivered more dynamics and a wider sound-field. Picky picky picky! This sounds good. Audience 8.5 - I would designate this recording as a reference recording – what was going on in 1973? That’s what this tape is, an old newspaper featuring a back story on this local band. Very dated…sound quality is marginal but not in a miserable, muddy, dogshit kind of way. It’s listenable and fun, like I said it is a good reference and may guide you towards other NYD tapes out there. I know I was certainly intrigued enough to seek out other recordings. Audience 8.7 - Not too bad for 1972, this tape has some nice energy, and not to say it doesn’t have limitations, but it seems to deliver a lot more than the expectation. You have to accept that the hall is a touch echoey, or at least the guitar seems to bounce off the wall to give a very short reverb effect. It’s not a distraction at all, in fact it is exactly how it sounded at the show – the recording is very accurate. Audience 9.1 - This show is divided into two sets, with both sounding similar but the 1st set is just a touch rougher in the sense that I hear a tiny bit of channel overload (not distorted!) and less clarity (but not harmfully so) than the 2nd set. Overall, both are very well recorded and I would imagine set 2 was broadcast as this was typical around this time and other Rosyln, NY. “My Father’s Place” shows were indeed broadcast on local FM radio. So, while it seems Set 2 is the better audio (fractionally), I would say it was recorded for broadcast and this is the pre-broadcast tape recorded from the audience with open mics…yes? No? Maybe so? I have no idea…it’s really good but not radio station broadcast good so maybe this show was never recorded for broadcast at all. Studio Quality 9.7 - A lot of collectors may think they are getting the same stuff over and over again in a different package but with the Prince studio collections you really are getting something different, but that might just mean alternate takes, mixes, or a different session with different players. Prince did like to experiment a lot and might want to try a song a hundred different ways before he was satisfied, similar maybe to Jimi Hendrix. I always find something to enjoy and always end up admiring Prince more and more after each listen…which is why I keep offering these titles because it lets me listen to even more Prince! Audience 8.7 - There is something very special in these amateur audio documents. While you could be overly critical of them for failing to live up to modern sonic standards, the truth is that not only is the audio acceptable as it is, but as a moment captured forever on tape that not only manages to document the entire evening (opening act included) but does so with few blemishes. It's decent quality too, although does not offer extremely dynamic low end or crisp high end, it's a recording that stays mainly in the middle with better definition on guitars which is fine. Audience 9.4 - A fantastic, close, precise recording that really drives that funk right through the speakers. A crackling, red hot energy that taper captures admirably, I mean, it sounds like he is sitting right directly in front of the band with microphones up and the band is only too happy to oblige. Paris 1971 Soundboard 9.6 - Excellent, well balanced mix seemingly made for some kind of professional use but if it was for broadcast than this is certainly a pre-broadcast master source. Frankfurt 1972 Audience 8.8 - A really good tape here, it seems it would have to have been on a reel to reel because it’s too good to be a portable unit with a cheap inboard mic. Audience 8.7 - This is a marvel! I mean, who would of thought to bother recording the completely underground opening acts for Genesis! Come to think of it, maybe even Genesis were still considered to be "underground" around this time! The point being that because someone went to the trouble to bring gear and set up to record you don't immediately expect that person to get ready in time to record each act in its entirety. They had to have planned it, to make sure they had enough blank tape, got situated in a good spot, got it rolling and balanced and then made sure to get the whole performance...MUCH respect to taper! The sound quality is very good, it is clear the machine used is good gear but I am inclined to think either the house mix was not ideal or his position was not ideal but the recording itself you can tell is solid. The flaw? I would call it mid-band crunch, or too much information crowding the middle band but not to the extent of distortion or overload, more that it ended up not having the clarity you want. The low end is round and tight, it's a comfortable sound but the overall mix is average. Audience 8.7 - OK, so I totally understand why someone might pass this up- but I think you would be missing something special. It’s an audience recording, very very deep into the crowd, it’s noisy, it’s not fantastic but it is great – now here’s the rub: If you are reading this review, this can be considered a spoiler alert. It took me a complete song before I realized the audience was not a part of the show. The people near the mic sound like they are a part of the stage show, or at least they did to me. I felt like I was in New Orleans but its New York City. I liked this performance, and I tolerate the recording, I came away after listening to this feeling I understood Prince just a little better. After this review I think it’s only fair to warn you – on a few songs the drummer’s high hat sounds like a missile shooting through your speakers – it’s unnerving and I don’t think there’s much you can do but wait for the next song. Audience 9.0 - An incredible document from The Netherlands that you can’t deny. I am a huge fan of this band, and of Jerney Kaggman in particular (one look will indicate the simple reason why), but seriously if you have any interest at all in progressive rock and have not yet discovered this band, this is a great opportunity to take a chance I promise you won’t regret it. Sound quality here is very good, capturing the power and finesse of the band and with this fine lady singer it’s like you don’t even need a PA because her soaring, soulful voice pierces the veil of sound with ease.
