FM Broadcast 8.8 A tape recorded off air sounding its age but surprisingly it’s actually decent enough that fans of this venerable band will rejoice at hearing such an early gig in very good quality. If you compare it to a typical FM broadcast you’ll be less ecstatic, but I tell you this: in the year 1982 there were few bands that could match the intensity and precision of Iron Maiden. This gig highlights that fact, personally I can’t recommend this one highly enough I loved it! IRON MAIDEN The Beast on the Road Tour Pavillon Baltard Nogent-sur-Marne, France March, 24th 1982 01. Audience 8.7 - So let me put it this way – the recording is not perfect, but is near perfect for someone who needs to try and understand what makes Iron Maiden special. This captures a night, just another night (in fact this was a stand of shows at the Radio City Music Hall) on a long, never ending tour for the band but they play as if it was their last show. It’s amazing how night after night, town after town, tour after tour, Iron Maiden never gives a bad performance. I love this capture even though it suffers a few bumps and bruises, because it’s in the trenches from the hardcore fans perspective, it’s as if the taper is working as hard to capture the gig as the band is in delivering it. I LOVE it, and once I started playing this, I could not stop. I think you’ll love it too. Soundboard 8.9 - Always nice to have these, the rarest of things, a great sounding Iron Maiden show from the early days. Bass is slamming on this one, you hear every note! FM Radio Broadcast 8.9 - This is not a typical radio broadcast, it is very raw and in-your-face loud! That makes it much more enjoyable to me. The kick drum and bass are nicely present in this mix – but are not boomy or obnoxious so this is a great way to hear instrumentation normally not very defined. This helps make this show sound even heavier now that a solid bottom end is going on. Iron Maiden "Maiden America" Summerfest Henry W. Pro 9.9 - this is unbelievably solid. Everything is in the pocket, which is awfully hard to do with a metal band. Every instrument, and the crowd mixed in to provide atmosphere. This had to be a broadcast, but it’s not from a broadcast it has to be a pre-broadcast master. I mean, it’s almost perfect. Audiece 7.0 - Loud and noisy, but Maiden fans know all too well the kind of lo-fi muddy sound most of the early recordings suffer from, that’s why this is welcome. It is not nearly as horrid as most, in fact in places this is actually pretty decent. You do get a great feel of the hall, and the energy level, and even though it is a tad crunchy you do get most of the band.

Audience 8.4 - Buried in a closet for decades this important document has finally surfaced. It’s, to my ears, slightly better than the next oldest live document which I believe is the Music Machine gig. The tape itself is not as bad as you’d imagine and that could be due to the diligent re-mastering that was done. The sound is not as murky and indecipherable as a lot of the other 1980 tapes. This can be appreciated, I mean, this is May of 1980 the band had yet to break open and even though they had a hardcore following, was not known outside of UK in any substantive sense. If you were a fan of Iron Maiden in these times, it’s akin to investing money in Google stock when it was first offered. Why would you? …maybe because you liked what they were doing and had a hunch. Audience 8.7 - While this tape may not enjoy the same clarity as some of the Japan 82 recordings, it does have a good powerful delivery nonetheless. Vocals come through the clearest, but the combination of bass, and guitars follows with the force of a piledriver to your skull...and I rather like it. The bonus here is the inclusion of the set by the band The Rods, and having never heard of any live tapes of them before, it was a most welcome addition to this great vintage Iron Maiden set.Iron Maiden Colston Hall Bristol, England 1982-03-11 Disc 1 {79:49} 01 - Intro [Doctor Doctor] ........ 3:39 02 - The Ides of March ............ 0:51 03 - Murders in the Rue Morgue .... 3:28 04 - Wrathchild ................... 3:32 05 - Run to the Hills ............. 4:25 06 - Children of the Damned ....... 4:46 07 - The Number of the Beast ...... 5:31 08 - Another Life ................. 3:43 09 - Killers ...................... 5:39 10 - 22 Acacia Avenue ............. 6:31 11 - Total Eclipse ................ 4:12 12 - Drum Solo .................... 3:20 13 - Transylvania ................. 6:12 14 - The Prisoner ................. 5:48 15 - Hallowed Be Thy Name ......... 7:14 16 - Phantom of the Opera ......... 6:51 17 - Iron Maiden .................. 3:58 Disc 2 {63:50} 01 - Sanctuary .................... 6:52 02 - Drifter ...................... 7:46 03 - Running Free ................. 5:03 04 - Prowler ...................... 4:32 Bonus Rods 05 - Rocking And Rolling .......... 3:26 06 - Waiting For Tomorrow ......... 4:02 07 - Get Ready To Rock 'n' Roll ... 5:34 08 - Nothing Going On In The City . 3:32 09 - Too Hot To Stop .............. 4:07 10 - Crank It Up .................. 5:54 11 - Getting Higher ............... 3:42 12 - Drum Solo .................... 3:50 13 - Power Lover .................. 5:23
