New York 1978 Audience 9.3 - What a wild, out of control ride this is! Not only perhaps one of the most engaging live Kinks bootleg recording (or at least in the top 5), It also may just be one of THE coolest bootleg audience recording of any band. Why? Why such praise? It captures an intangible quality, that thing you can’t accurately describe with words…it’s a statement of sorts. We have a foundation rock band (first British wave) who have always been sort of disregarded but who refuse to pack it in, and here is why. These guys were punk before punk was a thought, and here they are a decade and change removed from their 60’s heyday, playing the birth place of US punk and they STILL can out punk the punks. Brilliant! Magical. A MUST! Buffalo 1978 Audience 8.7 - A very clear recording, good solid mid range and leaning toward emphasis on the high end which gives cymbals the little bit of crispiness that makes them heard and not washed out. Audience 8.3 - This recording has you right in the thick of things. Equally enjoying both the electric excitement of the Kinks and the amazing responses from the audience. Quality is a little above average but the instruments are clear and not muddy. The vocals are very clear, which is important because Ray commands the show. This show has been written about, and not just for the incident involving Ray falling into the amps during Apeman. One to remember! When he falls into a bank of amplifiers (brother Dave kindly steps aside when he sees Ray toppling), members of the audience leap on stage to finish the song "Apeman" for Ray. By all accounts it is a night to remember. -
Audience 8.6 - It’s hard to figure out why there are few ’75 and ’76 period recordings of The Kinks. Perhaps it is due to the confusion among their fan base as to the new direction the band were going in with the big stage productions and “concept” albums. Looking back, one can now appreciate the artistic “stretch” going on as I am sure it became quite tedious having to bang out those mid ‘60’s chart toppers one after the other, even though they still throw in one or two. That being said, this is quite a nice find! A complete show, well recorded, and well performed. Audience 9.2 - I would have given this a higher rating but for some occasional volume fluctuations. Minus those, this is a "raise the hair on your back" type of recording. I can't explain it, some tapes just have it, this unquantifiable element, it's a lot to do with the band being recorded as much as it is in how they were recorded, and where exactly the taper sat, and what he used to record - so you take all that and factor it in to what is happening to you as you listen to an event that took place decades ago...that comes to life again and you are right there. As I listened to this, my neck hairs stood up. The problem with it being unofficial, or course, is that it was not recorded professionally, and in this case the audio is a little on the muddy side. I don’t think it is ruined though, because it’s not “thick” mud, it’s just missing something on the high end. -

Audience 8.8 - A well made recording that does straddle the fence a bit. There's some narrowness in how well defined the extreme ends are in both low and high end, meaning your middle frequencies are spot-on, clear, and defined but when you get to the real high end it gets crinkly up there. It does not damage the listening experience but could if you really crank up the volume. The taper does some adjusting it seems, as the show progresses it sounds like the tonality, or levels...something changes slightly...I don't know what really happens but sometimes this show is dialed in and sounds really great and then just ever so slightly it gets less defined or maybe it is my imagination. Either way, this is a really decent recording. Audience 9.3 - This show rates highly in the audio department because of how the guitars sound and I am a guitar guy so there is some bias…but it doesn’t matter what I like because it’s just a great recording all around. The sound envelopes you, it’s a completely immersive type of recording and will suck you in immediately. What a great find this is! Audience 8.7 - A kick ass show and quality is perfectly suited for the kind of loud and raucous music the Kinks made…albeit with excellent melodic sense. Recording has loads of power without overloading so I believe taper was using very good stuff for the time. -
Audience 8.7 - This tape, when it first surfaced, was to many Kinks collectors the Holy Grail of live tapes. It marked the band’s triumphant return to the States, and the band was determined to make up for lost time. A fiery performance and a great capture. A tiny bit of tape chatter in the first track but it smooths out from there and is a real rocket ride! Audience 8.4 - A very rare tape here, new to circulation and not bad, but not great either. What is the downside? Recorded towards the back of the hall, and some consistent tape noise that crowds the middle a little. The upside? It’s actually not bad sounding for all that was against it, you get used to it and after a few minutes you realize it’s very listenable. The crowd is pretty rowdy, I heard fireworks going off at one point – and they really love their Kinks in Cape Cod. I like this for the collectors, they will appreciate it. Audience 9.0 - Fantastic recording really, in fact I can only try and be real nitpicky to try to find anything outright bad about it. It’s close up, warm, atmospheric (I don’t mean echo or reverb either), and pretty good separation of instruments. Kick drum is even present, so it is also detailed. Good One! -
Audience 8.6 - Talk about being in the crowd, this recording is total immersion if ever there was immersion! But, here’s the good news – it’s a BLAST! The crowd is really an integral part of this performance, the band senses they have a great audience and they really play to them. It’s rather fun and gives you a tremendous feeling of nostalgia. A great ride! -
Audience 8.4 - A very rare treat, to hear a complete “Preservation” era show. There’s really not a lot of 1973 recording around. This one sounds just fine, while not venturing too far in either direction dynamically, and some lack of clarity down low in the spectrum…but the upper mids and highs seem fine. It’s a good recording that could use your own EQ flavoring to round it into shape. I am happy to have this as I have not heard many, if any, ’73 tapes as good as this. Early and Late Shows - Soundboard 9.1 and Soundboard 8.6 - The late show board tape is slightly problematic in that vocals and to some extent the drums are really prominent in the mix but the rest is pushed back. Acoustic songs come through nicely, they bring up piano and acoustic guitar so you get everything more even. At times it gets a little better, it’s not bad it’s just not as good a mix as the early show. -
Audience 9.7 - Is it live or is it Memorex?? It's both. It's a capture onto magnetic tape that sounds like it's real life. I totally life-like sound, immersed in the audience but placed ideally in front of the stage and getting a great mix. Your friends surround you, enjoying the moment as are you. Taper has good seats, and he manages not to get too bumped around because it sounds like a lot of stuff was being consumed this evening in 1972. A good one to have! J. Soundboard 9.0 and Audience 8.6 - This is a very interesting document of a period of time in the band’s history where they lost a key member of the band in guitarist Randy Bachman. That did not stop them, as these shows attest. Quality varies but is consistently good across all shows with the first part being Soundboard and the rest very clear and reasonably dynamic Audiences. -
Audience 8.7 - Both very decent recordings capturing a band that is on the cusp of breaking up, but holding it together very nicely for the shows. Interesting stage banter and occasional extended lead jamming present, certainly worthy of your consideration. -
Audience 8.3 - A fine recording all things considered. It’s a big hall, recording comes from somewhere in the middle of the arena but the capture is reasonable albeit without a good definition and some mild boominess. Overall you can be happy with this recording and of course the band has a fine repertoire. -

Audience 8.4 - This is not hi-fi by any stretch, but what it represents is a rollicking good time as only this band was capable of doing. In the mix is mostly Ron Wood and Rod Stewart, with a overdriving bass backbone that forces the intensity of the sound volume. It's a full bodied tape, no bones about it. With modern mastering tools, it has been brought under control...somewhat. Hey, I have heard MUCH worse than this, and once the ears settle in to it, what you have is a recording that delivers the fun and electricity of The Faces.
