  • Soundboard 9.0 - A classic old board from the fantastic 1976 European tour which has brought us a few amazing live works by this venerable band. Of course, by this time Ronnie is completely ingrained into the sound and style and one finds it hard to be overly critical of him compared to the very different Mick Taylor. • Soundboard 9.3 - A good, and raw board tape which perfectly suits the ramshackle, lurching Stones sound and style. Listen to how Mick sounds especially on Shattered – it’s perfect end of story but wait a minute Bill Wyman is actually present and accounted for in a way you never hear. • Audience 8.8 - This old tape is fascinating, and frustrating. The “DJ” is a guy who seems to work for a local radio station who somehow got to broadcast this show – but my spidey sense says it’s not actually what went down. This is a ruse to get the tape machine into the venue, I am willing to bet money on it. So, he’s in the venue but to keep up appearances he does station ID’s periodically (almost every song) and because of his cheap recorder, the station id he does just sounds like a loud sonic swoosh (thankfully they are real short). Zep are in good form but fight constantly against poor PA which makes for a very interesting evening and a unique tape. One thing I want to point out is that because of the weird PA problems, it seems Page is getting much more feedback than normal and it causes him to sound much more psychedelic and I actually enjoyed that very much. • Soundboard 9.7 - Terrific in every way this one will melt your brain. The engineer mixes this on the fly and works it out during Brown Sugar but there are some cool moments while he figures it out – like some stereo panning, and you’ll hear him juggle the bass a bit, but he gets the mix right and off we go!  The band is flying high…probably literally. • Audience 9.2 - This recording has a special quality to it, it’s not that it’s technically great – the instrument separation isn’t very good but the band does project well – the thing about this tape is it feels like you are sitting just above the audience, in the middle of the room, and you hear the space around you, you have a great sense of where you are and it’s weird but you can visualize this show. I give it a high rating because this recording captures the “essence” of this moment in time in an accurate manner that allows the listener to be transported. • Audience 8.4-8.6 - This gets a double rating because I found that it seemed to become better as it went, and really had its best moments during songs or parts that were not full on max volume. Now that being said, the mic that taper used (probably a condenser mic built into his deck) could not accurately reproduce the sound it was picking up in the hall to the tape itself – but because there was level adjust (I am guessing auto level), it never distorted. So what you get is a crowded sounding tape during most of the performance when the music is at full tilt (it’s Black Sabbath so yeah, it’s mostly full tilt), but during parts where the music is more sparse (like during Black Sabbath, or the solos, especially the drum solo) you can hear what the recorder was capable of because it is way much better. In fact I praise the drum sounds, super massive and that’s why I loved Black Sabbath on this tape in particular because it’s frighteningly dense and scary sounding here. This show can be appreciated for the inclusion of songs like Gypsy, All Moving Parts, and Rock and Roll Doctor which are audible enough that you can thank this taper. I’d not heard of this tape before so I assume it’s new to circulation, and personally speaking I am glad it exists and I feel it offers something worthwhile. • Audience 9.0 - This is a very good recording that delivers most of what you need, but for someone who perhaps understands the nuances of sound they may have wished for hearing this from a little bit closer with more clarity. That is nitpicking though – I think this sounds very very decent. The main attraction is Jeff Beck’s guitar playing and Johnny Depp’s accompaniment and you get that all very nicely. • Audience 8.8 - This show, while not the soundboard you expect since there’s so many from this tour, is a real charmer regardless. I am not trying to sell you on this, this just captivated me and by the end of the show I felt like I somehow knew Eric personally a little tiny bit. • Audience 8.9 - This recording is super duper realistic, meaning it’s probably exactly as your ears would have heard had you been in tapers seats…a but far back but because taper used exceptional quality gear you get a crystal clear sound. It’s the main PA mix that you hear which is not an ideal mix to be honest. Guitar and vocals are not pronounced but horns are prominent which kind of gives a unique way to hear the band. Is that bad? Well, I am not saying instruments are buried, I am saying the mix does not favor them and overall this is a unique recording that provides realism of atmosphere and amazingly clear and clean sound. • Audience 9.7 - Brilliant recording and an example of what you can do if you have excellent gear, perfect acoustics, and good placement. This version of the Chick Corea 1978 tour does not feature a full band ensemble but rather a more natural, non electrified direction which allows the players to really showcase their talents without much competition for the sound space. Really gives the listener exactly what they might have experienced attending this concert, a sort of audio time capsule in very good quality but more than that it is LOADED with electric atmosphere. You get a very good sense of time and space. Fantastic! There is one caveat…a microphone drop out does occur towards the end of the show that kind of spoils the flow but it was not something that seemed like taper error so all is forgiven. • Audience 8.8 - Excellent recording for the time period when it seemed most audience tapes sounded very flat and tinny. This one is pretty dynamic but for one fault (not tapers fault). The PA system, while good, did not give vocals enough clarity. During quieter passages, yes, but in louder parts (most of the gig) it’s sort of indistinct, but audible and not buried (just not real distinct). I mean, he’s totally audible is what I am getting at, but for some reason I can’t make out anything he’s singing about (is this par for the course with Marillion?).  BTW the Genesis comparisons are accurate! • Audience 8.7 - Both tapes sound as if they were recorded by the same person they are very similar although the slight nod goes to London for being just a touch brighter. That being said, both tapes do an admirable job (for 1971 standards) of capturing the epic ferocity of this amazing rock band in their prime, or just before they got universal “commercial” success. • FM Broadcast 8.8 A tape recorded off air sounding its age but surprisingly it’s actually decent enough that fans of this venerable band will rejoice at hearing such an early gig in very good quality. If you compare it to a typical FM broadcast you’ll be less ecstatic, but I tell you this: in the year 1982 there were few bands that could match the intensity and precision of Iron Maiden. This gig highlights that fact, personally I can’t recommend this one highly enough I loved it! IRON MAIDEN The Beast on the Road Tour Pavillon Baltard Nogent-sur-Marne, France March, 24th 1982 01. • Soundboard 9.2 - This is the complete recording featuring both sets (previously available as an edited down version) and is notable for the amazing version of Dark Star, although the gig is expertly performed, that track really stands out. The sound is clean (almost too clean) and does have a “rounded” sound, there’s no jangly edges here so crank it up for a better experience. • Audience 9.0 - A small club atmosphere puts you up close to the band and the respectful audience. The music is all-encompassing, it’s space rock with emphasis on rock, and It is quite interesting. Quality is clear, it’s not super dynamic but you can really sink into this recording and what is extra cool is the taper stayed for both sets leading me to believe they were connected to the band or their management. Maybe not, but it’s my guess. Cool stuff! Far East Family Band Troubador Los Angeles, CA Early Show 1978-03-24 First Performance in the United States. • Audience 8.6 - This old tape has been extensively reworked to present a fan favorite in as good of quality as ever. It’s not a great tape recording but it’s actually kind of a charmer, this is due in part because this old theater was a favorite venue for many of the classic UK prog and Canterbury groups of the time. It’s a very appealing concert, you can kind of sense the band relishes it. • Soundboard 9.3 - For my first exposure to a live Buzzcocks show, this was a splendid one!  The recording captures the energy and the excellent, gritty, and I would even say cocky guitar tone. • Audience 8.7 - Here is the big question: Was this broadcast over the air?  If it was, I’d find it odd that they recorded the show from the audience, I mean, in bootleg fashion as it sounds like a bona fide audience bootleg tape!   It’s decent enough though, taken from what seems like the back of the room so it gets the full PA sound projecting out, including audience reaction, so it is somewhat immersive. You definitely get a sense of the room that’s for sure. I think this recording is a raucous good time if nothing else and shows the band very comfortable with the music and their place in rock and roll. • Audience 8.9 - The great thing about this band is that most times a relatively normal tape machine can capture them cleanly and a really good machine captures them gloriously. • Audience 9.5 - If the date of this show looks familiar, it’s because she’s opening for Black Sabbath! Now, while this music is a product of its time, it is not to say that it’s not worthy of examination – I’ll be the first to say I love this stuff. First, it’s just kick ass rock and roll, with loads of hooks and even though the majority of the song structures are standard  barre chord blues-based riff rock, they have put enough creativity in them to make you take notice. Ruby is best known for being stage mates with Jim Dandy in Black Oak Arkansas, but whatever she learned from him she has taken very good notes and delivers primo stadium caliber boogie. Great “saucy” voice too! • Audience 9.6 - This sound is so real, so present, and SO LOUD but thankfully hangs together without shredding the tape it is stored on…mostly. On occasion there’s some minor breaking up in a certain frequency due to the sheer volume and proximity to the microphone but to be honest that is kind of what makes this recording such a revelation for me. I just never predicted that King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table would be as heavy and manic as it is here in an expertly recorded live setting. Rick Wakeman is a badass! • Soundboard 9.4 - A terrific “live” sound and feel, it’s hard to tell even if it is a board tape because it just has too much “room” and atmosphere. It’s quite astonishing really, it’s a fantastic sound and mix, and feel, and of course there’s the band and their amazing material.
