Audience 8.9 - One thing for certain, you can’t knock this recording for not having enough wide open and bright atmosphere! Holy crap it’s got that in spades, at maybe at a little expense of the lower register – although the bass is present in a sort of brassy and sassy kind of way. If you want to hear that guitar detail and don’t mind that the recording favors that sort of mid band/upper high range of sound and less emphasis on deep bottom end (most people would prefer not being overloaded with bass as it tends to muddy the sound) than you will like this a lot. I did not miss having phatness in the bottom end because I cranked up my bass on the EQ and lo-and-behold there was bass! Soundboard 9.5 - What a tour-de-force this show is! Long considered by Deadheads as being the pinnacle shows of the entire 72 tour, the “Texas Swing” stand of shows (Austin, Dallas, San Antonio, Houston) just present so much incredible music and vibe that it’s hard to believe your ears. Let me put it this way – if the psychedelic pop music of the 60’s is like a tic tac, than songs like Black Throated Wind or The Other One are Porterhouse steaks! Soundboard 9.3 The band are at the top of the biz, laying down a scrumptious assortment of rock, country rock, bluegrass, country, and heady, mind-frying psychedelic jams. Audience 9.4 - I love these open-air recordings that really shine, capturing not just the music but the entire vibe of the event…and so realistically! This to me is what collecting is about, basically it is about reliving a musical event from the past. This one does that in spades. Soundboard 9.6 - Same exact setup for recording as the Evening show do the review is the same. Killer sound for a heavier rock band because they preserve the tone and the dynamics, it’s not just VOLUME up to 10 although I am pretty certain this show was very loud. Audience 9.3 - The great thing about this performer is that his sound and style is timeless – it might as well be 1976 because after listening to his shows from the 70’s, I can’t tell much difference between then and this 1990 show. The show sounds great, it is rich and full bodied with an especially beautiful drum sound and bass is meaty without being overbearing although it sometimes shakes your speakers!

Soundboard 9.8 - A professionally made recording that saw a digital only release. This takes that stellar download and presents it in uncompressed, lossless form for you to enjoy. Nothing quite like this mesmerizing blend of Eastern trance psychedelic and Krautrock, the band never lost a step and sound like they traveled through a worm hole in time/space to leap from 1974 to 2013.

Soundboard 9.6 - A great sounding board because it incorporates the crowd, meaning that the engineer set up an ambient mic and those kinds of recordings are overall better than straight into the board line recordings.

Soundboard 9.5 - Somewhat controversial, this tour declared to the world that Bob Dylan would not be owned by a corporation, a label, any entity of this earth…so yeah, when you have something to prove you come out swinging. This stuff is actually some of his best stuff, even if there’s that unmistakable gospel and soul influence, it’s still very much Bob Dylan music. Excellent sound, but if I had to be hyper critical of anything it would be my own personal desire for louder lead guitars.

Audience 9.2 - Very nice job by taper to capture a show on good gear that allows the listener to feel a part of the experience – yes there’s some hoots and hollers but you won’t be annoyed, you will kind of agree and maybe do the same. The recording is close and bright with amazing atmospherics.

New York 1968 Soundboard 8.7/8.5 - This is a strange old tape, don’t get me wrong I am very happy to get to hear it, but it is a tale of two tapes…to my ears. It’s starts off, the first few tracks, as a relatively “clean” board feed, perhaps an AM radio live broadcast even, because it has that sound to it – like if you were listening to a radio broadcast with headphones (and took the headphones off slightly). Then, the tape changes to what I have to believe is another source, and one that is considerably more raucous and menacing. I can’t even say for sure the second part is a board, might be, but my guess is an on stage reel to reel recording (possibly done by John Sinclair?). It’s ok for what it is, both “sources” are welcomed into my personal collection since there’s so little of the live five out there.
Hollywood 1971 Audience 8.6 - Despite the lowish rating, this is very listenable. The main issue for me, and hence the low quality rating, is the drop off in the vocals. It’s not out front of the mix enough, but then, guitar (and bass) is the highlight so maybe that’s not so bad! Overall, I think if you love this band, this old tape is going to make you happy. One may wonder if a modern re-mastering would help this show come to life and the short answer is “maybe”, because it sounds like this one is already teetering on the edge of the bandwidth and to attempt sonic shenanigans might push it off the cliff. I’d like to hear an expert give it a try though.
