Pro Audience 9.2 - This rating may seem confusing and that is because I just don’t believe this to be a board feed recording, nor do I believe it to be a straight audience tape. I believe this may have been recorded for broadcast locally and the station probably hung mics or placed them somewhere in the hall because there’s too much ambience for a straight board tape. It’s very good, it’s got a critical element missing in every board tape and that’s some sense of the room, the audience, etc.

Soundboard 9.3 - This is a rough and tumble sort of board tape. Obviously never meant to be used in any official release, but it does certainly get the job done regardless. Very definitive instrument separation so you can concentrate on any instrument you want and you will get maximum information out of it – until you choose another one and then you will get stuck on that one. LA 1977 Soundboard 9.4 - THIS is what PUNK should sound like live…loud, brash, and totally in your face – that is exactly what this board tape delivers and I LOVE IT! Get it and you’ll see why. CBGB’s 1977 Audience 9.2 - A pretty clean recording, which is surprising to me as this is a punk band in a small club at full volume (presumably). So, either taper is affiliated with the club and set up somewhere with some good equipment or it’s a fan who just knew what he was doing and nailed it. I am going with the former. Audience 8.7 - This slightly above average tape sounds like it has been re-mastered and life restored to it, but the mix favors percussion and keys. The rest of the band is a little behind them but thankfully Carlos’ solos rise up above much more in the mix. I did find it an interesting tape with an atmosphere that lets you kind of soak up the Italian vibe – between the chatter and the feel of the venue itself it is kind of strangely…renaissance. Let’s just say the recording captures a little more than just the rock band that evening and it adds a lot to the experience. That is why I can still recommend this to fans, and the fact that it is 1971 which is that interesting period with Neil Schon. Studio 9.0-9.4 - Varies as far as the overall sound and mix but does not stray much below a solid 9.0…but man what you are getting here is bona fide Aerosmith and NOT the dressed up, slicked out, packaged presentation of Aerosmith that the record company needed in order to make vast profits. This is down and dirty, raw, primal, and above all – fantastic! To hear unadulterated guitars, guttural, almost fuzz style bass, and howling, tortured Steven, and this is 1987 mind you! Audience 9.3 - It’s hard to get much better than this as far as overall enjoyment…for one thing yes it sounds great but man, the band is in the pocket, razor sharp and ready to fuck things up in Netherlands. Sammy has his shtick so dialed in it is easy to forget the effortless banter of his nemesis David Lee Roth. And…finally there is Satch’s incredible fiery guitar work that is quite breathtaking here. Audience 9.3 - I found this to be highly immersive and exceptionally enjoyable. First of all the band sounds invigorated, breathing new life into the old catalog of songs but fiery with the newer material. I like how you can tell when the taper has to duck so as not to be discovered because at those moments (thankfully few) you hear the music suddenly seem above you and farther away, kind of cool actually. Audience 8.7 - Do not be put off by the rating! This is a very strong 8.7 verging closer to 8.8. Why do I stress that? Because it has a lot going for it, the only black mark I hold against it is due to the lack of distinction between guitars and Paul being pushed back in the sound mix. That being said, it’s more the “mix” of the guitars that leads me to say that, not that you can’t pick each one up. I think I am just being picky though. Audience 8.4 – 8.7 - A tape that has its share of strengths and flaws. The strengths are that at times it is pretty good, maybe comparable to the Raleigh 70 tape, but other times (such as during Dazed and Confused) the tape shows it has flaws due to age and although these aren’t egregious, they are clear and present and do effect the flow of the concert. For example the audio during Dazed has a speed fluctuation problem that is annoying. The problem stays through the next track but clears up after that and the sound improves dramatically. It is here that the tape shows it has considerable value! Yes, a great find after all. Two versions of the show are represented with both being similar, the different being in how each was re-mastered so it is up to the listener really. I liked the first re-master (CD1) personally.
