  • Soundboard 9.7 - A fantastically clear, bright and accurate recording of what can only be described as genius level “funk” and house party music with sporadic blazing electric guitar and hot ensemble jams…you have to give credit where it is due…man this cat could lay it down!  Great stuff. • Soundboard 9.6 - Another near perfect one from you-know-who and this time guest appearance by Miles Davis. I did hear some minor static interference with Prince’s guitar pedal during some solos, nothing that would probably even be noticed by most people. • Soundboard 9.4 - This is what Prince collectors come to expect, a crystal clear board of an amazing performance. Funny thing when listening to live Prince, he’s never put on a bad show…ever.
  • New York 1981 Soundboard 9.3 - Great early period Prince! Paris 1981 Soundboard 9.3 - Another very good board tape from early touring Prince, doing his thing on the “club” tour of 1981. • Audience 8.7 - OK, so I totally understand why someone might pass this up- but I think you would be missing something special. It’s an audience recording, very very deep into the crowd, it’s noisy, it’s not fantastic but it is great – now here’s the rub: If you are reading this review, this can be considered a spoiler alert. It took me a complete song before I realized the audience was not a part of the show. The people near the mic sound like they are a part of the stage show, or at least they did to me. I felt like I was in New Orleans but its New York City. I liked this performance, and I tolerate the recording, I came away after listening to this feeling I understood Prince just a little better. After this review I think it’s only fair to warn you – on a few songs the drummer’s high hat sounds like a missile shooting through your speakers – it’s unnerving and I don’t think there’s much you can do but wait for the next song. It’s an uh-oh I ain’t gonna lie. Prince Gotta Lotta Butter To Go Butter Restaurant New York City, NY. 06-17-2006 Disc 1 1. It Ain't Over - Peach 2. Te Amo Corazon 3. • Audience 8.7 - Do not be dissuaded by the rating, yes there are innumerable pristine board tapes out there to enjoy but let me tell you this show is a MONSTER! I was exhausted by the end, and what an ending stretch it is. The audio is very decent with a wide stereo field which helps it. When I first heard this tape I knew it needed to be refreshed because the performance was extraordinary and in fact it was a big event at the time. I remember hearing about it and I live in Texas! So, with that in mind I worked on it and the result is very convincing and gives life to the tape. It’s not going to be the best sounding show you’ve ever heard but it will be one of the best performances you’ve ever heard. I think this is worth it. Prince Madison Square Garden New York City, NY. • Studio Quality 9.7 - A lot of collectors may think they are getting the same stuff over and over again in a different package but with the Prince studio collections you really are getting something different, but that might just mean alternate takes, mixes, or a different session with different players. Prince did like to experiment a lot and might want to try a song a hundred different ways before he was satisfied, similar maybe to Jimi Hendrix. I always find something to enjoy and always end up admiring Prince more and more after each listen…which is why I keep offering these titles because it lets me listen to even more Prince! So thank you! • Audience 9.6 - Superb clarity and separation of instruments while retaining a cool, honest live vibe which is what recording from an audience can produce so long as the gear being used is high quality and taper knows how to use it. • Soundboard 9.3 - Excellent, tight, punchy, clean but there’s still some atmosphere which I think may just be electricity, as in the electricity this band creates and that spills out onto the recording. A party-like atmosphere permeates and the band is very good all throughout this 3 disc set. Great performances, each and every band member shines.  This style of funk stops and turns on a dime, with breakdowns and turnarounds, it’s exhilarating! • Soundboard 9.7 - As crystal clear as it could possibly get. Why it doesn’t get a 10 rating?  Because in my opinion a perfect recording is not just crystal clear but has numerous other elements that separate it from just another clear board tape. Not to denigrate this at all, because it is great – but a crystal clear near perfect board tape is just that, a near perfect board tape that does not reflect ambience, atmosphere, vibe (although not always), and other elements of a live concert. Still,  you will love this anyway it’s Prince after all and these kind of fly on the wall type recordings are super cool. The Spectrum Philadelphia, PA. 11-22-84 Disc 1 1. Bass Try Out #1 2. • Studio 9.7 - More spectacular studio works by Prince who commands the proceedings in a Hendrix-like manner. Listen to the different guitar effects that he uses, how it suits the song and how different he makes it sound when he needs something. He has a bag of tricks let’s just say. • Audience 9.5 - A lot of audience periphery (shouting and bustling) but nonetheless it’s a crystal clean and very dynamic recording. The energy is palpable and comes right out pretty much all the way through as the audience is very responsive and Prince most definitely fed off it. Guitar tone is perfection – vocals very nicely placed in the mix as is everything really. Great, great stuff!

Audience 9.3 - The ’92 Aftershow is equally excellent with just slight differences in tone and distance to come second place to the Bataclan show.

Pro 9.3 – The radio broadcasts here are great and as you would expect, since they are professionally recorded, but honestly I still prefer the Bataclan audience tape which says an awful lot about what a good job taper did on that.

Audience 8.8 - The final disc contains London ’99 audience tape which is the weakest of this set but still decent enough to enjoy. Sounds somewhat distant (not in the stadium sense but small venue distant).
