Audience 8.6 - Pretty solid actually, you get pretty good instrument separation even though the rhythm guitar and bass combination is REALLY powerful on this tape, just thankfully not enough to bury the lead work which rings out over the top of it all. Audience 8.6 - This recording really surprised me. I saw Ozzy around this time and it was excruciatingly loud so I wondered how could anyone get a good capture unless they were using excellent mics and level control? I guess someone did. Audience 8.7 - A new tape discovery and it is a good one, although not without some bumps and bruises. The tape is incomplete, missing at least the last 1/3 of the show (if judging by similar set lists from the time). The taper is close, and the sound is raw, powerful, and clear. The first few minutes are bumpy, but the tape smooths out for the majority of the show. The band is firing on all cylinders, much like the following month’s Texas Pop Festival performance. A great find! Audience 8.7 - It’s definitely rare to find unknown Allman Brothers recordings featuring Duane, and here we have one new to circulation. The sound quality is very good, it really is from the master (obvious when you hear how clean it is) and it sounds like it has been gently mastered for optimum fidelity. A great find! Soundboard 8.8 - This tape shows some signs of age but it is holding its own and is strong in many aspects. The only thing that prevents the higher rating is that there is some “dirt” present, what I mean is just some extracurricular noise present in the mid band, nothing that destroys any enjoyment at all – it is a strong tape as I said, but for a soundboard you expect purity and this one is not pure. Still, I think the setlist answers the question “should I”? Yes. You should. This is a kick ass show and the Zeppelin covers just put it over the top. Heart Waukegan, IL. Audience 8.3 - One of those tapes that captures the power of the band, but does not deliver crisp definition…that being said, you must listen to this all the way through. It’s been cleaned up as best as could be and it delivers MUCH more audio than it ever did before prior to modern mastering techniques. A worthy addition to collections. When you arrive to the drum solo section, you will hear what this tape had the potential to present, it sounds great. Audience 8.4 - The same taping crew that did the Ozzy Osbourne, and it sounds very similar but maybe a touch clearer. It’s a pretty good effort, especially when you consider the year, and what I mean is that the tape recording equipment used during most of the 80’s did not usually produce anything to write home about. Soundboard 9.0 - Interesting hearing this line up in such clarity, it certainly allows you to make a better judgment on the music, which by the way is pretty damn good. It’s different, in some ways, but it is still very good. My advice is not to go into it thinking you are getting Black Sabbath – rather consider it a Tony Iommi side project, then it makes more sense and will grab you in a better way. Audience 8.4 - I think the draw is, when you are dealing with these old audience tapes that don’t have very wide dynamic range, is that as long as you get a solid guitar, and reasonable vocals, it’s going to appeal to collectors because what they want is the performance mainly – and I tend to agree because this is after all the peak period for the band. You can hear guitar, vocals, and keys in pretty decent clarity and forceful too – I see the value in this recording, a little rough around the edges when band is at full flight due to limitations with the recorder, but let me tell you I hung around, listened to the whole thing, and came away satisfied. Audience 7.9-8.3 - A tape that starts rough and ends rough but in the middle it is actually not bad. This is a taper that made this an event, the evening was captured with a genuine excitement which is epitomized by the introduction to the show by taper. I love that stuff. I like this tape because I understand now – it transcends the necessity for perfection because it happened in real time for the people who made this tape and there’s a twinkle of magic because you suddenly, for a split second, become them during the show.
