Soundboard 9.1 - This is a strong, powerful sounding board with a pretty decent sound mix, although not super clear, but not a muddy mess…somewhere in between the two but leans toward being mostly clear. Metallica Live in Davenport, IA - DEAD HEROES May 30, 1986 Coliseum Ballroom Damage, Inc. Tour 1. Master Of Puppets 2. For Whom The Bell Tolls 3. Welcome Home (Sanitarium) 4. The Thing That Should Not Be 5. Cliff Burton Bass Solo 6. Damage, Inc. 7. Seek & Destroy 8. Creeping Death 9. Am I Evil? 10. Whiplash 11. The Four Horsemen 12. Motorbreath
-
Soundboard 8.7 - This is the kind of soundboard that was probably meant just for soundman audio reference. It’s fine though, and generally speaking, way better than any audience tape because Metallica, especially in 1986 (I know because I saw them in ’86 and it was the loudest concert I’d ever heard) was so loud there wasn’t any way to get a good capture unless you had excellent gear with mic level adjustment. Metallica - Metal, Inc. Live @ The Coliseum, El Paso TX May 12, 1986 1. Master Of Puppets 2. For Whom The Bell Tolls 3. Ride The Lightning 4. Welcome Home (Sanitarium) 5. Seek And Destroy 6. Creeping Death 7. Am I Evil? 8. Damage, Inc.
-
Studio Rehearsals 8.8 - Thankfully recorded on something other than a cheap boombox so the quality is there as far as being able to hear everything clear. Vocals are the only thing that does not ring out clearly, but other than that this is gold. This early Metallica is a far cry from what would be in just a few short years. METALLICA 1982.03.XX - Downey, CA Rehearsals in Ron McGovney's Garage 1. Hit the Lights 2. Helpless 3. Jump in the Fire 4. Let It Loose 5. Sucking My Love 6. Am I Evil? 7. The Prince 8. Killing Time Released in '94 via a collaboration between KNAC and Ron McGovney, a number of these demos were debuted during the CLASSIC and ORIGINAL Mandatory Metallica show on 105.5 KNAC. They did a whole week with Ron McGovney in the studio and some of these gems were played on the air. Pat O'Connor, one of the DJ's from the Mandatory show, had his hand in putting out numerous Silver Bootleg CD's and promptly released Sucking My Love between '94 and '95 and then released Things That Should Not Be in late '95. Always an interesting listen... they had a long way to go. Lineup: James Hetfield - Vocals (No Guitar) Dave Mustaine - Guitar Ron McGovney - Bass Lars Ulrich - Drums

Soundboard 9.3 - An expertly recorded and mixed show. It’s hard to find anywhere to improve it, but maybe, and I am nitpicking here, but boosting the guitars in the mix a bit (disclaimer: I am a guitarist, I have bias!). Kick Axe Country Club Los Angeles CA 1984-09-17 01 – Alive & Kickin’ (4:10) 02 – On The Road To Rock (4:43) 03 - Vices (4:13) 04 – Just Passin’ Thru (4:56) 05 - Maneater (3:24) 06 – Runnin’ Wild In The Night (3:30) 07 – The Dark Crusade (7:12) 08 – Dreamin’ About You (5:16) 09 – Stay On Top - Drum Solo (6:09) 10 – Heavy Metal Shuffle (3:14) Band: George Criston - vocals Larry Gillstrom- guitar Raymond Arthur Harvey - guitar Victor Langen - bass Brian Gillstrom - drums

Audience 8.7 - This band, while not a household name by any stretch, actually did gain quite a following throughout Europe and even to a much lesser degree in the USA. They played a style of progressive rock that was accessible but did not convert to singing in English completely and that probably won over more fans in their home country. The recording here is clear, it provides just enough dynamics and detail to let you sink yourself into their sound, although the recording suffers some level problems towards the end, but recovers enough to end on a high note. The material is great, I am reminded of Pink Floyd, Eloy, and perhaps maybe a bit of ELP. Home Recordings 8.8 - You have to give props to Lou Reed because he can take an acoustic guitar and a bedroom atmosphere and crank out demos that you can’t ignore. The songs man, he can write! Amsterdam 1973 Soundboard 8.9 - Nice to have good, clean board tapes of this line up. I think this is his best band, and I think he sounds terrific here. Sheffield 1973 Soundboard 8.9 - Another great board tape featuring Lou’s best band. I love the sound of the band let alone their musicianship. Lou rises to the occasion, he knows he has to deliver or he’ll be overshadowed by these fine players. Thankfully, he actually does! Soundboard 9.6 - A tight, expertly mixed board tape. I think how they mic’d this up to include audience was a great idea, it adds so much to this recording. Lou feeds off their excitement. Audience 8.6 - This is a surprisingly decent sounding tape. I was not expecting it to be anything close to this good, quite frankly. Clarity is reasonable, it’s not a muddy tape, there is some dynamic to it without distortion (although bass is not well defined). The key components are all here though, and it’s a tape (and gig) that can be welcomed wholeheartedly by the punters. Led Zeppelin Musicarnival Warrensville Heights, OH July 20, 1969 01. Audience 9.5 - Astounding! Not just for the excellent sound but the dynamics are so present here, you get lush, rich lows and then all the way up through the spectrum including detailed but not sizzling highs. Combine all that with the energy of Tusk performed with a marching band at the LA Forum and man, yeah, this is the stuff! -
Audience 8.8 - On the rarity scale this is one of those needle in a haystack recordings. It’s an obscure “group” (actually just a duo but here it sounds like they have some accompaniment), and the music straddles the fence between fold psyche and space rock (that’s a good thing). I would say this couple was trying to stretch something as far as they could in the context of a “folk” duo. Interesting material, very positive vibes! Emtidi Quarter Latin Berlin, Germany 1973 01. Soundboard 9.5 - This is a compilation of unreleased guitar vehicles and exceptional solo excerpts for fans of the "Shut Up N' Play Yer Guitar" and "Guitar" albums. The sound quality is excellent soundboard. Yes, some of us are guilty of skipping over the “vamp” sections in order to get to the shred. This compilation delivers what I feel are some of Frank’s tastiest pieces, and all in superb quality. Studio tapes 9.0 - Great to hear this raw, early pre LP stuff because quite frankly it’s fantastic. It’s a different take because there is a real sense of urgency with this recording, like the band know it’s critical to make it happen or they remain bums on the streets of San Francisco. Soundboard 9.7 - I saw this band around the same time and I can tell you it’s great that there are board tapes around because even though they were spectacular live, the sound was very dense and there’s a lot going on. With this tape you can hear it all in glorious quality, it’s prime stuff, psychedelic rock taken to the next level. Audience 8.8 - This is what we all look forward to as Rush collectors, another great, and rare, Rush show from one of their best time periods. While not quite as clear as the Boston 79, this tape gives us a great aural spectrum for our ears to delight in. FM Broadcast 8.8 - A tape that sounds…1978. That doesn’t mean it’s bad at all, it’s just a rather dated sounding broadcast to my ears. That means it kind of captures the time period rather well, and the quality itself is pretty good, but not exhibiting the usual dynamic of an FM broadcast. Not enough 1978 era tapes of excellent quality though, so grab this one. Sale!Quality varies but does not dip into anything that might be considered sub par, mostly very good, and a good bit of this set I would consider to be excellent. Sounds to me like this old tape could have benefited greatly from some remastering work but as it is, it’s listenable and a very fiery performance by the band. I like that you can hear every instrument, I think this recording has promise and I hope it gets a facelift soon. SPECIAL NOTE: Another title also going under the same date and venue has made the rounds but is in fact NOT Los Angeles 1970 (in fact it is listed on this site, so if you bought that, feel free to exchange it free of charge for the ACTUAL real date and venue that is that title - Anaheim 1970). Audience 8.7 - Sound resides somewhere in the mid range and does not feature well defined high end but does have a warm, round bottom to it. The mix does not favor any one instrument, it’s rather even, and all in all the listening experience, while not exceptional in any way, is also not offensive. Audience 8.6 - This tape does not offer a wide dynamic range, but neither is it compressed sounding, so it’s not awful on the ears. The good thing about capturing a band like Genesis during live performances is that the PA and mix is usually good, and not a distorted metal mess, so even average gear can produce reasonably good results. Audience 9.1 - A lovely, intimate recording that belies the size of the venue. Of course, this was a different approach Elton John undertook on this tour. I think it works well, the bombast has been toned down and what you get instead is an examination of his music presented to you by the man…I think you will appreciate these songs in this way. Audience 9.1 - Once taper settles in, this tape TAKES OFF and is pretty impressive. What struck me more than anything is not only the realism, but the wide dynamic range. It’s also a very powerful recording, you get a sense of the volume, especially when you get isolated drums during some of those small breaks in between measures, they are full bodied and great sounding. Audience 9.1 - Taper is close to the action, and this gives the sound an exciting edge to it that pulls you in and doesn’t let you go. Guitar is palpable, drums are crisp and detailed, even organ sounds appear when a lot of other audience recordings seem to bury it. VERY cool and definitely a must have! Audience 8.8 - A great tape here! I heard pretty much everything happening on stage, and the mix is not bad. FM Radio Broadcast 8.8 - A tape that has held up decently over the years but does not have the expected clarity associated with a radio broadcast. That being said, it’s still very good, has the depth and dynamics just enough for a progressive rock performance on par with the likes of ELP. Great material here…a band that should have continued on but for disco taking over and what not. Audience 8.3 - Somewhat thin and rather raucus, with an outdoor venue quality and perhaps taper somewhere right in the middle – not close up and not too far – but even so, I find the guitar almost too overwhelming and can imagine what it was for the concert-goers that day. So, if you like your guitar really loud, here is your tape. Audience 8.5 - At first it’s a little over-driven and very harsh but it all smoothes out and becomes an astonishing document…still rather crude but powerful and all instruments are heard. I was transfixed by this, by the band’s tightness and such excellent guitar! Wow, to have been there… Disc two is a very rare document of the John Kay Band opening for Steppenwolf in 1972 and is also very good…and very Steppenwolfy as you could imagine. Soundboard 9.2 - This is the only known board tape from 1975. It’s very good, I find no real problems other than occasional drop outs, and it’s maybe a little distracting here and there but I don’t think it kills the fun. Audience 9.1 - Great stuff here! A wide, ambient, but solid capture. Pro Radio Broadcast 9.8 - When hearing a recording of a great band in this fidelity, it reveals much more about the artist than what you might learn just listening to their hits on the radio. For instance, thier music is much more layered and nuanced once you hear this show, even live the band is so tight, so professional, that stuff is going on you don’t even get from the album tracks. Soundboard/Audience matrix 9.5 - Here you have a recording that does both of the things you want in a live concert experience – clarity and punch via soundboard and ambience, immersion, electricity of the audience. The audience recording being blended in really adds to this experience, even when you hear excitable fans clapping nearby…it’s quite exhilarating really and this recording will eventually be hailed and revered by fans because…well, unfortunately because of the passing of Taylor Hawkins (RIP). Audience 8.7 - A surprisingly decent tape surfaces from Italy where Genesis found initial acceptance in the early part of their career. Sound is clear for the most part, and the timbre is pleasing to the ear…if I can knock it I would say maybe it is a bit compressed in the middle, so no crispness in the highs nor definition in the low end but it’s not the kind of compression that you get from, say, a video tape. It’s quite good like I said so feel secure if you get it knowing it will be worthwhile.
