Studio Rehearsals 8.8 - Thankfully recorded on something other than a cheap boombox so the quality is there as far as being able to hear everything clear. Vocals are the only thing that does not ring out clearly, but other than that this is gold. This early Metallica is a far cry from what would be in just a few short years. They did a whole week with Ron McGovney in the studio and some of these gems were played on the air. Pat O'Connor, one of the DJ's from the Mandatory show, had his hand in putting out numerous Silver Bootleg CD's and promptly released Sucking My Love between '94 and '95 and then released Things That Should Not Be in late '95. Audience 8.6 - This is a surprisingly decent sounding tape. I was not expecting it to be anything close to this good, quite frankly. Clarity is reasonable, it’s not a muddy tape, there is some dynamic to it without distortion (although bass is not well defined). Audience 8.6 - This tape does not offer a wide dynamic range, but neither is it compressed sounding, so it’s not awful on the ears. The good thing about capturing a band like Genesis during live performances is that the PA and mix is usually good, and not a distorted metal mess, so even average gear can produce reasonably good results. Audience 8.5 - At first it’s a little over-driven and very harsh but it all smoothes out and becomes an astonishing document…still rather crude but powerful and all instruments are heard. I was transfixed by this, by the band’s tightness and such excellent guitar! Wow, to have been there… Disc two is a very rare document of the John Kay Band opening for Steppenwolf in 1972 and is also very good…and very Steppenwolfy as you could imagine. Audience 8.7 - A surprisingly decent tape surfaces from Italy where Genesis found initial acceptance in the early part of their career. Sound is clear for the most part, and the timbre is pleasing to the ear…if I can knock it I would say maybe it is a bit compressed in the middle, so no crispness in the highs nor definition in the low end but it’s not the kind of compression that you get from, say, a video tape. It’s quite good like I said so feel secure if you get it knowing it will be worthwhile. You can add some low end here and it would make a world of difference because the sound is already good, so anything that can help it is only going to make it even better rather than overdone. Sometimes loud rock concerts in large venues have a low end rumble that makes adding anything to it a risky proposition – this one screams “please add some low end to me”! Audience 8.7 - A VERY powerful recorded sound coming out at you like a hurricane. Thankfully this tape holds together, although it sounds like it’s going to tear apart any second – it’s quite a frantic recording if I can describe it that way. You are like placed in front of the mains, and surprisingly you can hear everybody, especially Klaus who sounds BRILLIANT as does the entire band. The music also holds up, and since I never saw Elton John live I am still impressed with how much the guitar factors in to this show. Audience 8.5 - While some may say this recording is not technically that great, I beg to differ. Now, it is not super clear, but it is not muddy…it is not distant, it is not super dynamic but it still has guts and balls. I actually REALLY grooved to this, and the band is ferocious sounding. Hearing the fresh faced Vinnie Appice on drums for the first time with Sabbath and he’s really driving the beat, a different style to Bill Ward. This one is a must have for anyone that calls themselves a Sabbath fan. It’s THAT important. Soundboard 8.8 - OK, so yeah this board tape is extremely clear but it suffers from the sterility of most board tapes, and when the band is ACDC, you really need that electric atmosphere a rowdy audience provides. I also found this tape kind of missing some “guts”, but, if you want to hear everything, all guitars and drums, vocals (including backing vocals), then you can’t miss with a clean board tape that allows everything to be present. Truly somewhat of an oddball release, this album stems from a long lost rehearsal session by a bunch of stoned South African teenagers in the late 60's. Not much was even known about them, not even at the time as the band never gigged or recorded a legitimate album. Still, the music reverberates with manic acid rock intensity. You've been warned! -
Audience 8.7 - This recording is better than it has a right to be, after all it is in a big stadium, early 70’s so the gear, if it doesn’t weigh 80 pounds, has to be cheap crap…but, dang it this sounds cool! Granted, instrument separation isn’t great (it is good enough), and it isn’t super close up, but all that still does not detract from how stompin’ this is. Great fun! Studio Quality 9.5 - I am thankful for this because it has further taught me to appreciate and respect Clapton’s musicality, and his desire to remain true to himself first and foremost. Audience 9.4 - Before you write off the late 80’s Eric Clapton, you REALLY need to look deeper for a minute. This performance, and this recording, clearly demonstrates the reason why one should examine the totality of an artist’s career, particularly if said artist was as prolific and talented as Mr. Clapton. The edgy, electrified sound of Clapton’s Cream days is gone and that is ok so long as you still get the TALENT, and many of Clapton’s performances (at least on tape) sometimes lacked the elements that you would have hoped for, despite his undeniable songwriting prowess…it was the PLAYING of the guitar, and the sound of said guitar, that we craved. Here, along with his pal Mark Knopfler, all of that is delivered and the audio quality does the whole thing justice because it is excellent. I think playing with Mark elevated Eric’s game. Hearing them do “Money For Nothing” together was cool, and Mark decided to sing in his own “bluesy” way in deference to Eric. Sweet! Eric Clapton feat. Audience 8.4 - They should call this tape “Noise In The Attic” ha ha! Actually, I am being very tough here, it’s a bright tape, it favors high end but is not too screechy…I just need more low end personally. That being said – vocals are in the front here, followed by Joe Perry, so that is crucial to this being a worthwhile listen. Taper has to hide his gear once or twice, so you occasionally hear the inside of his coat. Not too many 1975 period tapes out there, I am thankful for this one…you will be too, especially when the coast is clear and taper brings the mic back out (makes for a really refreshing audio moment!). Audience 8.8 - It’s hard to express exactly what makes a particular recording or gig special, mainly because it is all very subjective. But, I have been collecting music since 1982, so I feel I have earned some credibility ha ha! So let me tell you why this one is special. Placed right in front of the main P.A. speakers, this sound is brutal. Sure, the first 45 seconds are a mess, but it gets better, and man, is this a rocking good time! The sound is ferocious, threatening at any moment to destroy the tape completely, but it doesn’t. It’s hot, it’s loud, but it’s also very real, as if happening at the very moment you are hearing it. The Who in 1970, in Detroit (Rock City!), playing Tommy (and other great tracks) in front of an appreciative audience (without incident!). Everyone sounds great here, and you have a front row seat. Central Park 1971 Audience 8.6 - The limitations of this tape are mainly the over-riding level of tape his present, although it’s been re-mastered to the degree that much was removed without sacrificing highs. The actual recording is not bad, and even with some hiss, the tape does not sound like it is multiple gens down. Highs are good, lows are present, mix is not terrible (guitars are somewhat low, but this is a live mix situation and not the taping). Copenhagen 1972 Audience 8.8 - A very clear tape with an emphasis on high end crispness (not brittle or irritating, just very clear in the high end), mix favors vocals, drums, then keys and guitars in the same range. Radio/TV Broadcasts 9.4 - I have learned to trust most Prince titles now, generally speaking there is great care taken to preserve the fidelity, to obtain master sources, and to package appropriately. That seems only fitting when dealing with an artists’ of Prince’s caliber…and I mean that most sincere. The list of contents for this title is extremely long and extensive and I did not write it up. Audience 8.8/9.3 - So, you know how huge the O2 Arena is, right? Well it sounds like a huge arena, but aside from the large mega stadium ambience, this is not that bad at all. It’s what you call “immersive” because you really can imagine yourself there. The audio quality itself is very good, as far as the tonality and levels, etc. The “live mix” is typical of an event like this, tons of atmosphere, party vibe (with about 15,000 of your closest friends), and Prince as always delivering the goods. The after show audio is extremely well done, sounding quite intimate and very warm.
