I found it interesting to hear the early takes because on some of the tracks it really shows less of the Southern influence and more of the psychedelic influence (listen to their cover of Evil Ways). Soundboard 9.3 - Listen to the beginnings of something happening, you can feel it about to take off. It’s a bunch of free-thinking kids who’ve smoked a little something, maybe popped a few little somethings…and then whaddya know the blues and folk and country and all kinds of music you grew up with sounds a whole lot better if you amp it up and throw some wild licks here and there…maybe let the sound feedback some…the birth of the San Francisco sound of the 60’s. Audience 9.4 - A tape that is almost TOO good…and by that I mean it has captured with sonic clarity the exact sound coming from the P.A. – which in this case was a P.A. that had some really pumping upper mid’s and high range frequencies!  No wonder people often leave home from a concert with a ringing in their ears…for weeks!  This show would have had me moving farther back to be honest. That being said it is just my own preference for sound – but the casual listener will find this recording damagingly good. Audience 9.1 - This is a very cool old tape, first I have to issue a disclaimer: If you don’t like deep, round, brassy bass you won’t like this recording. Bass is the star of this show, and I don’t mean it’s a low end muddy mess either – it’s a beautiful bass sound that pretty much drowns out most of the keyboards (not entirely) and at least vocals area able to hold their own in the mix.  That all being said – this ROCKS!  I love it, I love hearing the tone and detail of the solid bass work of Greg Lake. Detroit 1973 Audience 8.4 - A somewhat average but clear enough tape that has some sort of wobbling effect during at least the beginning portion but evens out thereafter. I think this may not be complete when compared to any other performance during the tour – including the one that is paired in this set. San Bernadino 1974 - Audience 8.6 Keith Emerson and vocals clearly stand out in this recording, while drums and bass seem to not be as distinct. There is a small amount of tape hiss indicating the age of this tape, but I won’t slag this one off because it isn’t that bad at all. Audience 8.7 - This is a very strong, clear tape that captures almost too much atmosphere (crowd) and leans towards the upper-mid band frequencies a little much. That being said, I still recommend this one because the sound is good enough to be very responsive to EQ, so if you season it to taste you will end up with a very nice experience. Soundboard 8.7 - The only flaw with this tape is that it features a typical video compression type sound but the mastering job mitigated a lot of that so that the sound does breathe a bit more. It’s still very good, a little rough maybe but I take it and I am happy with it especially if nothing else because all instruments are present, the bass work is surprisingly defined in this mix…I can actually hear individual notes being played and my goodness Michael Anthony was a boss! Audience 9.1 - I am always surprised when I hear such good recordings from this time period and then I remember that mics and P.A.’s and acoustics were all relative to the capture in that if the combinations were good, the result would also be good. This recording presents excellent separation of instruments with great live sound mix of the instruments, so much so that Free convinces you they could have soldiered on as a stadium act rather than dismantle and reform as Bad Company. Either way, I’ll enjoy what we have left of this venerable band in the form of live tapes like this. Audience 9.2 - This is a really decent recording, it does sort of lean towards an upper mid range emphasis but not to the tape’s detriment, it’s just that is where most of the action is. The drums have a realistic sound, very live and thunderous without being boomy. Vocals are incredibly present and up front here, so this recording has an immediate impact when you listen and it captivates you all the way through to the end. FM Radio Broadcast  8.9 - This is not a typical radio broadcast, it is very raw and in-your-face loud!  That makes it much more enjoyable to me. The kick drum and bass are nicely present in this mix – but are not boomy or obnoxious so this is a great way to hear instrumentation normally not very defined. Audience 9.4 -A fierce sounding tape with major emphasis on Tony, and man, you can hear every nuance of the guitar and it is literally spine-tingling…but at the expense of Ronnie’s vocals. Not to worry too much, I mean, it’s just a badass recording you tend to overlook that. This is well worth listening to I highly recommend it. Audience 8.8 - I am very thankful this recording exists, so few tapes from around this time that are clean and audible. Now, it gets off to a bumpy start but smoothes out and remains consistent for the duration. It’s taken from I would say the middle of the venue but does not suffer from typical distance recordings. The main P.A. system is strong, so you get a good signal here, all instruments present and accounted for. Vocals remain very much up front in the mix, guitars follow.  All in all this is really outstanding and the time period is optimal. Audience 8.8 - Truly a marvel, you get three blockbuster acts performing outdoors at a large German Rock Festival in 1974 and you are sitting there listening to something that was probably forgotten within days by everyone as they smoke, drank, and partied until the cows came home in preparation for the next festival that came to town. What I am really saying is that while the band members and audiences probably cannot recall what they did on September 27th, 1974, we can now relive that very day in the lives of all of those people because taper managed to capture everything while sitting in a decent spot and running decent gear. Why he/she did this I do not know but I certainly appreciate their efforts not taking it for granted one bit. The music here sounds good to my ears, very comfortable even if not very distinct in the mid band (where guitars reside) but more than made up for with a beautiful round bass sound and good vocals and highs. Soundboard 9.6 - A great sound happening here, but what I really love most about it is the brassy, killer bass. Obviously it’s everything, it’s all great, but Prince, even being mainly onto a funky, keyboard, drum, bass approach on this tour (guitar is present in places just not emphasized) which might not be everyone’s cup of tea, still is able to engage this old rock and roller. Audience 8.7 - A rare tape of the 1974 tour, you gotta grab these whenever they appear because unfortunately there are precious few. This one does not disappoint in the quality dept. despite being pretty friggin’ loud and close to taper…almost crosses over the line pegging the meters into distortion but it doesn’t…it would have been a total loss if it had. Audience 9.1 - God bless the tapers for this one!  What a great show it is, and really I can’t recommend it highly enough because it’s TOTALLY immersive, I mean, sure it’s not 100% perfect but in a way it’s as good as you would hope. It’s a fun experience to hear this man just at the top of his game like this with a band that doesn’t miss a thing, ever. Broadcasts 8.8/9.4 - A little variation depending on the source of the recording in question (all fully annotated in the notes), what you get here is a collection of broadcasts over the air during 1969 and 1970 when music was in full change mode and experimentation and blending of genres was all the rage. Blodwyn Pig certainly has to be included in that product description with their jazz-tinged hard rock akin to Jethro Tull without flute (substitute sax instead). Makes sense, since Mick Abrahams helped define Tull’s sound in the beginning days. This is great stuff though and is HIGHLY recommended.
