(Can't Seem To) Get A Line On You [4:24] The Sotheby’s Reel are Glyn John’s working tapes when he was the Stones' studio producer during Let it Bleed through the Sticky Fingers sessions, the Stones classic rock period. The tape reel was auctioned some years ago at the famous Sotheby's London auction house and featured some different versions of great songs. Something to point out; "Gimme Shelter" recorded here on 15th March 1969 and featuring Nicky Hopkins on piano, a version of "You Got The Silver" sung by Jagger from 16th February and an early take of “Sister Morphine” almost without piano. But remarkable is also "Loving Cup" that starts with a striking different piano intro and lasts more than 6:30 minutes. Minimal are the differences in the mix for songs like "You Gotta Move", "Dead Flowers" and "Sister Morphine" second version that all resemble the finished "Sticky Fingers" release. On the other side of the coin we have to put the many opening riffs of both "Brown Sugar" and "Bitch" that are tirelessly repeated by an engineer that rolls back and forth the tape looking for a better echo effect, it seems. When the Stones recorded "Brown Sugar" in Muscle Shoals Studios it is said that they tried the song the whole night to get it right, we can feel how they felt while listening to all these false starts. Anyway when the tracks are completed like version number 11 of "Brown Sugar", here comes an early take with Stu on piano and no sax or takes 19 and 20 of "Bitch" where you can hear Jagger ad-libbing over Keith Richards' guitar solo. Last track offered is a primitive version of "Shine A Light" called "(Can’t Seem To) Get A Line On You" that stems from Leon Russell’s session at Olympic Studios in early October 1969 with Jagger on vocals (different words) but this take was officially released in January 1994 on a Leon Russell CD. -
Private recording 8.7 - This is a cool piece of history, and the sound quality does not play that big of a role even though it is decent. It’s kind of loud, a little overloaded in spots, but just because it is raw, it doesn’t mean it ain’t great. I had this on vinyl decades ago and it was one of my favorite boots. Audience 8.0 - You are probably wondering why I am including low rated recordings here, especially Kiss…well you may have a point but here’s the thing: This site is for ALL collectors, and the reason this show is listed here is because it circulated for years in unlistenable quality (below 7.0), but thanks to modern technology it is now listenable. It’s from perhaps one of their best tours, musically speaking, and needed an upgrade so bad! So, for the casual fan I would say pass, but for the Kiss collector who knows how bad this show sounded and wants to throw away that old CD, I would recommend this 2020 re-master. Still kind of rough but there is now music here instead of an insufferable wall of distortion. I am not 100% sure but I think the big thing about this show among collectors was the inclusion of the song “Move On” to the set list, perhaps only performed this one time. Audience 8.4 - This tape takes a song to find its sweet spot (relatively speaking), so I give full credit to the taper for having the sense to make sure he was going to get the best capture he could get. What I like about this is that it’s not a muddy mess, it is bright, it’s present, and I think a very worthwhile addition to the collection especially considering it’s from 1972 which was, arguably, one of the Stones’ best tours. Audience 8.7 - Easily one of the best recordings of the 1970 Euro tour. Mick and Keith really project, the sound is forceful, and even though you do get the rest of the band (and yes, Mick Taylor for sure), they are playing second fiddle to the Glimmer Twins. Audience 8.6 This is a pretty common Who boot, and, well, it’s fine but to me I thought guitar was too low in the mix. It’s a rollicking good show, bass, vocals sound strong followed by Moon, and to be fair, during quieter parts Townshend’s guitar is clearer. It’s during the heavy parts where guitar loses force (it’s there, it’s not completely gone!) and probably it saves the tape deck from overloading so I’d rather it a little behind in the mix than completely distorting the tape. Audience 8.9 - Very lively, great atmosphere! Sound is very very good, and the mix that gets to your ears includes everything happening on stage but what I really love is the sound of the drums. Fills the arena yet is pretty tight, with that slight bouncing off the walls effect that gives an almost 360 degree experience. Audience 9.4 - Beautiful and well balanced, this taper was well known to have produced consistently high quality work in the area taping a variety of concerts big and small. Band was opening for Badfinger, and this is the earlier of the two performances that day. This is one of the only extant live recordings of Big Star playing in the ‘70s that has not been officially released. Audience 8.5 - Pretty middle of the road, not annoying or bad, but not crystal clear. Hard to hear any detail in the guitars, it’s on the bassy side, so it’s bass and Jagger, and some locomotive sound which could be Keith and Ronnie. I mean, it is clear enough, it’s not a “bad” tape at all – in fact listening closely I am tempted to say this was pulled from a video source. Audience 9.5 - Thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish. The only thing that prevents an even higher rating is some occasional conversation around the taper, not that it ever rises to an infuriating level or anything, but it sometimes calls to your attention. I still can’t figure out the concertgoer who simply cannot focus their attention on the performance they have spent good money on seeing and hearing.
