They play what sounds like, to my ears, the same vintage equipment they must have used originally, or maybe their equipment was new in 1973 but I guess it is vintage now…as are the dudes ha ha! • Soundboard 9.4 - Yes it is CDB but it’s also a whole lot more. Since 1974 they hosted the Volunteer Jam and invited their friends and fellow “southern” rock bands including this legendary get together (famous for being the first on-stage appearance of Lynyrd Skynyrd after the plane crash). Sound is taken from what sounds like a couple of different sources but it’s all consistently great. January 13, 1979 Volunteer Jam V was held at Municipal Auditorium in Nashville, TN. This Jam marked the return of Lynyrd Skynyrd to the stage for the first time since the '77 plane crash, and the CDB gave the first live performance of a song that would catapult the band to superstardom, "The Devil Went Down to Georgia." Special guests also included Toy Caldwell and George McCorkle from the Marshall Tucker Band, Dobie Gray, The Winters Brothers Band, The Henry Paul Band, Link Wray, John Prine,Papa John Creach, Carl Perkins, and Jim Owen. • Various Sources 9.0 - I give this a high rating for many reasons, as it can be easily assumed that the sound quality will vary being a compilation. The producers were smart to put it together this way, I found it to play much like a legitimate record company release. The worst of the recordings is in itself not even that bad, in the context you are hearing it in, it takes on new significance. I myself did not realize how few times some of these songs were played live, so having a collection like this makes sense. I enjoyed it immensely. So will you. • Audience 8.8 - Very bright recording, the bottom end is there and it has good detail but could be a little deeper. That being said, if you want to hear the combination of solid, hard rock guitar paired with Greg Lake’s proggy and sometimes jazzy keyboards well, this is about as good as that combination can ever sound. It works actually, quite well. The good thing about this recording being on the bright side is that the guitars and keys are especially clear. • Audience 9.3 - Taken from master tape, this is super clean, vibrant, and detailed – as an Italian prog recording ought to be.  These guys cover a wide range of sound and style all keeping within that certain ethos of grandiose, elegant Italian rock (can get frenetic at times, complex, gentle, ethnic, it's all that and more). • CD 1 Audience 8.8 - A very good, bright, well balanced recording. Most welcomed because for me, it’s this time period (actually 1970-73) of the band I like the most. CD 2 Audience 8.1 - A somewhat flat, and a little bit muffled recording. I can still hear everything, it lacks dynamic range, but I did not find it annoyingly so, just when compared to disc 1 this one sounds lifeless. • Soundboard 9.3 - A very well traveled tape, seeing release as a video, as well as countless boot CD’s. The video was so-so, the audio has always been great. The show itself, not their best, and not their worst. Is it essential?  It’s a great sounding ’76 board tape (the closing gig of the tour in Europe) so, my thought is that it should be somewhat necessary in the collection. • Audience 8.6 - This is an untouched, raw transfer straight from the reels, and as such it will sound like it could be MUCH better sonically with some professional sound re-mastering. Many people will no doubt want to hear it as it was recorded, and it is good, it’s really pretty good, but what I would prefer is a sonic facelift because I think this one really deserves it. It’s still a great show. • Audience 9.1 - A really fine recording and a great show this is! Some minor limitations present during very heavy passages where the equipment fails to maintain the clarity we get used to during most of this show – but it’s not a deal-breaker at all because the recording remains powerful without distorting which is critical to the success of the tapers’ efforts here. You might lose a touch of vocals and some clarity (a little bit) but that will not detract from the pleasure you will get from this show.
