Audience 9.5 - What makes this one so special is that it is a COMPLETE document of the entire processes that unfold while a performance is orchestrated. That means you will hear the entire soundcheck (a concert in itself), the show in its entirety, and the Aftershow. All of this occurs over two days, and let me tell you when I say it is immersive, I mean in the literal sense you are completely immersed from start to finish. Even the sonic quality is excellent although I understand this is entirely subjective. For me, I loved it. I loved being in the crowd and even the screams and oohs and aaahs added a real sense of realism and were not obnoxious at all. The mix and balance of the sound is so good, I love the drums, guitars are really present and vocals are in a good spot. Audience 9.3 - Yes, it is that good – and there is, I believe, a soundboard which is the source for the pro shot video but the audience tape is used here because, quite frankly, it is better. You need the atmosphere, you need the sense of space, distance, and vibe that a well-done audience tape can produce. The dynamics are good, the sound is round and warm, lush if you will. My only complaint would be the lack of the crisp highs, but there are highs present just a little rounded off maybe. I am nitpicking! -
SDBRD 9.5 - This is basically the same set already available here but in SDBRD quality. Also, there are some tasty bonus tracks on some of the discs that aren’t on the other set. Consequently, I am phasing out the other set which is a 6 disc set (three 2CD sets). You can get that last set for a huge discount right now (only one available). Quality varies again but I found this particular O2 week of shows to contain the best audio fidelity. Bonus DVD "Planet Earth Is A Stage" - London O2 Videos 2007 - Reel #1 This abolutely xclusive, yet uncirculating O2 Arena video is the only O2 performance which offers a complete show (no material missing). It offers a direct view of the stage, but also focuses on the video screen at some points, e.g. during the piano sit-down. The video has been paired with the best audio around, an excellent uncirculating source. And this is only the beginning, since there is more rare material "out there"... The show itself is a special one: The first main show in September and the very last Saturday nite show of Prince's stay in London 2007 - and it feels! Prince was definitely on fire that nite: 'I might be small, but so is dynamite!' he proclaimed before explaining "The Rules". The show started with an unusual psychedelic "thunderstorm" intro, somewhat reminiscent of the Purple Rain tour interlude. For "Musicology", special guest Will.i.am came on stage and added some freestyle raps. Mr. Dynamite proceeded to give his purple fans a great hot concert and ended the show with a highly-explosive late encore: This was the only main show lasting *past* the 23:00h curfew! Which means that "Let's Go Crazy" probably resulted in somebody having to pay a hefty monetary fine - And it was only the beginning of the nite… Nite 11, O2 Arena, 25.08.2007 pm, 100' This video has been given "the full treatment": All 10 breaks have been smoothly edited, missing views have been carefully completed by other video material, and the audio has been replaced by the best audio source around. Audience 8.7 - OK, so I totally understand why someone might pass this up- but I think you would be missing something special. It’s an audience recording, very very deep into the crowd, it’s noisy, it’s not fantastic but it is great – now here’s the rub: If you are reading this review, this can be considered a spoiler alert. It took me a complete song before I realized the audience was not a part of the show. The people near the mic sound like they are a part of the stage show, or at least they did to me. I felt like I was in New Orleans but its New York City. I liked this performance, and I tolerate the recording, I came away after listening to this feeling I understood Prince just a little better. After this review I think it’s only fair to warn you – on a few songs the drummer’s high hat sounds like a missile shooting through your speakers – it’s unnerving and I don’t think there’s much you can do but wait for the next song. Audience 8.7 - Do not be dissuaded by the rating, yes there are innumerable pristine board tapes out there to enjoy but let me tell you this show is a MONSTER! I was exhausted by the end, and what an ending stretch it is. The audio is very decent with a wide stereo field which helps it. When I first heard this tape I knew it needed to be refreshed because the performance was extraordinary and in fact it was a big event at the time. I remember hearing about it and I live in Texas! So, with that in mind I worked on it and the result is very convincing and gives life to the tape. It’s not going to be the best sounding show you’ve ever heard but it will be one of the best performances you’ve ever heard. I think this is worth it. Prince Madison Square Garden New York City, NY. Studio Quality 9.7 - A lot of collectors may think they are getting the same stuff over and over again in a different package but with the Prince studio collections you really are getting something different, but that might just mean alternate takes, mixes, or a different session with different players. Prince did like to experiment a lot and might want to try a song a hundred different ways before he was satisfied, similar maybe to Jimi Hendrix.
