Soundboard 9.1 - In this recording, what you will notice right away is the massive sound that they dialed in for Charlie…very different but I like it! The rest is OK, not as full bodied as I’d prefer it to be but it gets the job done. Audience 8.7 - I rate this as very good and it is, but a typical review might not explain what makes it so very good. It’s not the greatest live mix or sound, but it’s a tape that delivers real magic despite itself. The Mick’s (both of ‘em) are the highlight, both are more prominent and both are on top of their game. Audience 7.2 - When it comes to The Stones, you can’t deny that ’69 to ’72 is where you need to focus. That’s how it is with me, and therefore ANY tape that comes along from that time period, I want it. So I wasn’t completely disappointed with this audience tape, even with its obvious limitations. -
Pro 9.7 - There are loads of Rolling Stones studio session tapes out there but the year of 1982 for some reason has not been well documented…until now. Audience 8.5 - an interesting tape, sometimes flawed but quickly recovering. It’s an old tape after all, and I am glad someone dug it out of their shoebox and made it available. The stadium PA systems all have funny mixes sometimes, with how things are panned, etc. etc. and this one is no exception. I get more of the synthesizers and a very articulated bass which is actually very cool because normally Bill is just a rumble. ROLLING STONES ATLANTA,GA. Radio Broadcast 8.0 - Not a vibrant, clear document but the amazing thing is that you can hear the band playing over the crowd! That was not typically the case around this time. Stuff like this is important when put into its proper context, this is the birth of modern rock and roll actually. Audience 8.1 - In the pantheon of ’69 Stones audience tapes, this one ranks as one of the more listenable ones. The recorder levels are low, so some tape hiss comes up at volume, but it is relatively clear, no murkiness (which historically is a sound killer), and you actually distinguish very well the two distinct guitars (but still sometimes can’t tell where Taylor ends and Keith begins (which is kind of what they strove for anyway). Audience 8.5 - Should be a higher rating but for the mastering where the mids are so hot. Put this through your Equalizer and bring the mid band down a little bit and you have a very strong recording. The highs are insane, not screechy just detailed, and the low is present, so just fiddle with the mids because it’s just too hot there. -
Audience 8.7 - Easily one of the best recordings of the 1970 Euro tour. Mick and Keith really project, the sound is forceful, and even though you do get the rest of the band (and yes, Mick Taylor for sure), they are playing second fiddle to the Glimmer Twins. Audience 8.2 - From tape source not LP, this recording has some tape hiss present, but it’s not overwhelming the music. Music sometimes seems a little muddy but then clears up a little then returns to a little muddy. It’s not bad though, it’s much better than most of the multi gen STP tour audience tapes out there. Studio Quality 9.7 - Overall the quality is superb, a couple of songs maybe just a couple notches down but none here that is less than excellent. Obviously these versions are not what was on the album but some are pretty close, just some different mixes, maybe alternate guitar workouts and maybe Mick is trying some different vocalizations but it’s still another angle on a great album. Why do all these “modern” era Stones albums seem to age very well. Because they were and are good, fact! Audience 7.9-8.3 - A tape that starts rough and ends rough but in the middle it is actually not bad. This is a taper that made this an event, the evening was captured with a genuine excitement which is epitomized by the introduction to the show by taper. I love that stuff. I like this tape because I understand now – it transcends the necessity for perfection because it happened in real time for the people who made this tape and there’s a twinkle of magic because you suddenly, for a split second, become them during the show. I can’t really explain it, but something happened while listening that made me understand what I was listening to beyond a rating. Make sense? THE ROLLING STONES Boston Garden Boston MA. Audience 8.8 - Back in the cassette tape trading days, many tapes would be passed around containing the Mick Taylor period and those were the ones I most gravitated towards. A lot of those shows I have never listened to again since the cassette days for fear they would still sound so weak…but this one has blown me away, literally. It is not the old multi-gen, hissy and muddy clusterphuck like so many of those audience recordings were, this one is really pretty friggin’ good. Not perfect, but VERY damn good.
