Audience 8.7 - Every audience tape has a certain unique “timbre” to it, a quality hard to define – it encompasses distance from source, surrounding ambience, equalization, harmonics, and more. So, this recording is what I would call “very good” but different than other 88 Euro Zappa tapes in timbre. I find this one leaning too far in upper mid band and treble, not irritatingly, but wanted more bottom end. My ears were telling me that is what it wanted…yours may not it is all very subjective. Audience 8.8 - Back in the cassette tape trading days, many tapes would be passed around containing the Mick Taylor period and those were the ones I most gravitated towards. A lot of those shows I have never listened to again since the cassette days for fear they would still sound so weak…but this one has blown me away, literally. It is not the old multi-gen, hissy and muddy clusterphuck like so many of those audience recordings were, this one is really pretty friggin’ good. Not perfect, but VERY damn good. Audience 9.5 - Easily one of the best, if not the best, audience recording of the US leg of the 1988 Tour. If you have to pick one, I would always point to this one for that reason but also because it is a great show and features a special guest or two (Adam West and son Dweezil), but I don’t want to spoil the surprise. Audience 8.6 - A kind of bumpy ride at times, being immersed in the middle of a rowdy audience, but the music comes through surprisingly well for such a massive cataclysm it must have been! It’s kind of fun, it’s a time capsule, and as long as I can hear the music in a clear way, even if it is not “hi-fi”, it’s fine by me. Audience 8.5 - an interesting tape, sometimes flawed but quickly recovering. It’s an old tape after all, and I am glad someone dug it out of their shoebox and made it available. The stadium PA systems all have funny mixes sometimes, with how things are panned, etc. etc. and this one is no exception. CD 1 Audience 8.5 - A very good sounding tape here, nothing that annoys the ears, in fact it is clear with a solid impact vocal and smoothly integrated guitar/bass. I did notice some phasing effect but it’s not even a bother at all, in fact in this case it adds some atmospherics. Solid! CD2 Audience 8.7 - Slightly more distant than the previous show but certainly has good clarity, a more even mix as far as the drums being at the same level as guitar, bass, and vocals. It gains points in the overall clarity, sounding like a master was used as there is virtually no tape noise, no mid-band muddiness, really CLEAR! Turn up the volume because it sounds way much better at loud levels. Soundboard 8.7 - A tape that shows some age with a little bit of a lack of high end that would provide more clarity as far as the sound mix. It’s a workable board tape nonetheless and it does feature the antics of Pete Townshend and Keith Moon so there is that. In this mix, it is guitar, bass, drums (and vocals are fine) but don’t expect much more. Soundboard 8.8 - A little bit thin, but it’s clear and of course the guitar is really captured well. Vocals are sometimes in the background here, not that it matters because the all important guitar work is so present you will be more focused on it instead. It is a pretty good performance, it was a good night. I can’t complain about this one, I think it will be appreciated by people even those with only a passing interest in Clapton.
