• Audience 9.5 - Brilliant recording in every respect, and one that I dare say rivals a lot of board tapes in dynamics and presence (definitely beats most boards in the presence dept.). Is that heresy? I don’t care if it is, I would take a tape like this over a board tape every time. • Audience 9.3 - This show rates highly in the audio department because of how the guitars sound and I am a guitar guy so there is some bias…but it doesn’t matter what I like because it’s just a great recording all around. The sound envelopes you, it’s a completely immersive type of recording and will suck you in immediately. What a great find this is! • Audience 9.2 - What immediately strikes you about this recording is that Rick Wright’s synth sounds and effects are NOT window dressing! In fact, they are almost overwhelmingly loud at times during the concert. Now, what I like most about old recordings is when they reveal something to me I never knew – in this case I did not know or appreciate how much Rick’s work, however consequential during the song, was not mixed out or down by any stretch but you might think that judging on the myriad hundreds of tapes that exist that do not give you a true appreciation of the volume.  This tape is insistent, relentless, and thankfully clear and dynamic. The middle and upper midrange is sometimes almost too much but never does it distort. Get ready for a front row earschplittenloudenboomer! • An absolute beast of a canister! Loaded down with 14 discs, it's quite the experience as you follow the Who on tour in the States in 1980. For the most part, all of the recordings reside in the mid to upper 8's on the 1-10 scale, with a couple coming in at over 9.0 (Essen, for instance). I found it to be very satisfying as all of the songs I enjoy hearing them play are represented, without the overindulgence into Tommy...finally! • Soundboard 9.0 - The unmistakable emphasis in this mix is the percussion (and to a lesser extent keyboards) but that makes for an interesting take on this one…you are forced to reckon with the powerhouse engine room for once, and with no regrets either. It’s still a good recording, and everyone else is there but you will know who’s taking the stage in the mix here. • Excellent quality throughout with only disc 1 being less than ideal due to the rarity of the tape and early vintage, and that is because you are comparing it to the rest of this set which is all soundboard. The canister cover might appear in the photos as though Rory's face is all washed out but that is just how the flash affected it. • Audience 9.3 - A brilliant, dynamic, and exciting recording that anyone could enjoy. I mean, this sounds like it could be officially released…not 100% perfect but I would not be as thrilled about it if it was perfect.
