Audience 8.6 - Surprisingly decent, it’s got some “rattle and bones” but overall it is highly listenable with a good timbre to it. Anything from this period is welcome, and this old tape has not only survived the decades intact but delivers on the enjoyment meter considerably. The bonus tracks vary but are generally pretty good quality with the tell-tale sound of vinyl ever present throughout. No attempt was made to clean it up, this is due to the sensitive nature of the high end on these recordings, it would seem any real noise reduction or cleaning would compromise that. Soundboard 8.8 - This tape exhibits some compression characteristics but is overall clear enough to enjoy. It doesn’t favor any one particular frequency, and does not have a large amount of bottom end. The sound resides mostly in the mid range, but it suits this style of music and that is why I found it to be just fine. Aerosmith 19840831 Oakland, CA The Coliseum Disc 1 01. Audience 8.7 - It’s definitely rare to find unknown Allman Brothers recordings featuring Duane, and here we have one new to circulation. The sound quality is very good, it really is from the master (obvious when you hear how clean it is) and it sounds like it has been gently mastered for optimum fidelity. A great find! Soundboard 9.5 - A professional recording that has a real 1974 mix – sound engineers might understand what I am saying. Naw, I mean, it’s super clean and tight but it also has a certain kind of “dated” sound, and it really feels like a small venue to me…but these are PLUS marks! It’s for those reasons I love it. Audience 9.6 - This is a special set, not just because it also contains the complete soundcheck but because it is stunning quality and off the hook performance. Audience 9.3 - Again, we discover that yes some people do really know how to use stealth recording gear to great effect. Lovely balance, warm, in the pocket and thankfully so because this tour was perhaps him at his peak. That is not to say he does not perform well now, it is just that this tour seems to have them so up and enthusiastic almost every show, with great special guests and great set lists. Audience 9.5 - Listening to this recording made me think for a second I was listening to classic Gabriel era sans Peter Gabriel (he’s backstage nursing cold) ha ha! What I mean is, the performance and setlist is reminiscent of an earlier time because the band seem to be playing the songs as if for the first time. It’s just great to hear – and the sound quality is top shelf. Soundboard 9.7 - This is not just a good board tape – it’s a tape that has loads of atmosphere to go with the upbeat party vibe of the band. It’s simply amazing sounding. Soundboard 9.2 - Another fine recording from the board is here to enjoy. A great setlist, and I mean it is super strong all the way through. Hard to beat this period. Great stuff! Audience 8.7 - A new tape discovery and it is a good one, although not without some bumps and bruises. The tape is incomplete, missing at least the last 1/3 of the show (if judging by similar set lists from the time). The taper is close, and the sound is raw, powerful, and clear. The first few minutes are bumpy, but the tape smooths out for the majority of the show. The band is firing on all cylinders, much like the following month’s Texas Pop Festival performance. A great find! Audience 8.7 - So this is one that fell below the radar but absolutely must be considered by any Crue fan to be one of the best of the best…and technically speaking it should not be. It’s not a board tape, it’s not even the best audience tape out there – but it is one of the best from this tour AND it just friggin’ smokes as far as performance goes. It’s one of the best played shows I have ever heard by them. The atmosphere is electric, the band is feeding off it, and they just deliver one hell of a performance. The tape captures the evening quite well, and you really feel as if you are there. I love that, I want the tape to be clear and I like some dynamics but I also really like a good atmosphere – this just delivers man. I saw Ozzy around this time and it was excruciatingly loud so I wondered how could anyone get a good capture unless they were using excellent mics and level control? I guess someone did. Soundboard 9.4 When you listen critically, you will discover that this was a great tour. Most of the time the band was on point, fiery, gritty, dirty, sort of like they were in 1978 maybe, which is what you want The Stones to be like. The playing in particular on this show is fantastic, and the mix allows you to get everything in great detail. Certainly this is one to have in the collection. Audience 8.8 - A surprisingly good tape here, with pretty much everything you require including really great atmosphere. The flaws have mainly to do with the ability of the equipment to supply bandwidth, which basically translates into depth or dynamics, which are present but maybe not to the degree you prefer. It’s certainly worthy of your investigation though, and will not be a one and done show. SUPERTRAMP Sam Houston Coliseum, Houston, USA 05 May 1979 CD 1 - 76:53 1. School (5:53) 2. New York 1978 Audience 9.3 - What a wild, out of control ride this is! Not only perhaps one of the most engaging live Kinks bootleg recording (or at least in the top 5), It also may just be one of THE coolest bootleg audience recording of any band. Why? Why such praise? It captures an intangible quality, that thing you can’t accurately describe with words…it’s a statement of sorts. We have a foundation rock band (first British wave) who have always been sort of disregarded but who refuse to pack it in, and here is why. These guys were punk before punk was a thought, and here they are a decade and change removed from their 60’s heyday, playing the birth place of US punk and they STILL can out punk the punks. Brilliant! Magical. A MUST! Buffalo 1978 Audience 8.7 - A very clear recording, good solid mid range and leaning toward emphasis on the high end which gives cymbals the little bit of crispiness that makes them heard and not washed out. Drums are highlighted and have a great sound too.
