Pro Radio broadcasts 9.0 to 8.8 - Ok, so let me put this into some context: These recordings are incredible and an absolute joy to listen to no matter what vintage they are. These are so historically significant, and the quality is surprisingly good when you consider what had to be absolute mayhem at the shows. I am reading Keef’s book right now, therefore these shows take on a whole new meaning to me right now. I am floored by what I am listening to…you will be too! Audience 8.3 - On this tape, you will hear all instruments (guitar out front) pretty clearly, not much crispness but decent bottom end and midrange intact. Slightly muddy in the middle with occasional brighter spots (definite improvement by the beginning of disc 2) throughout as the taper moves into better position. A touch of hiss is present. Not bad, not stellar, I would get it though if you like Rory’s set list during this time (Shadow Play, etc.). Rory Gallagher .... Soundboard 9.1 - I am kind of doubting whether it is truly a board tape because it doesn’t have that sort of dry and immediate sound, it’s got too much atmosphere. That being said, it is definitely pro, and could be open mics placed strategically around the stage. Sounds great! -
Audience 9.7 - The question you might ask is “do I really need another version of this?” and the short answer is “Hell Yes”. Why? Because technology has advanced to the point where you can take multiple sound sources (in this case four) and merge or “matrix” them together seamlessly to create a sonic tapestry so good it takes your breath away. Audience 8.7 - Both Volumes are very good and clear, but I give the nod to the first Volume because during the second one there are some odd stage sound situations and I have to fault the sound man who was probably nodding at the desk (possibly shot up with gram before the gig?). Anyway, historically speaking what you have here is pure gold and the literal birth of country rock. Great players, solid all around. Audience 8.8 - A fascinating recording, obviously with high quality microphones because there’s a detail here, especially with drums and bass (managing to realistically capture the depth of bass and the precision of drums). Guitar and to a lesser degree vocals get pushed slightly behind drums and bass, and the keyboards are a little bit behind those. Not to worry, even when the guitar work is almost tough to make out (taper must have been on one side of the stage) you have to remember Gilmour plays a lot of high notes which tend to carry across any hall so they are picked up here. My opinion is that because of the elegance of the way the bass and drums are recorded, when the guitar is really present it makes for something pretty amazing when it all comes together (and it does, just not all the time). Audience 9.7 - This was broadcast live at the time but I can tell you it is not a soundboard. There is too much ambience (a small club apparently) that gives you the impression they did not even need to run a board feed for this broadcast. It’s superbly captured, the detail, the depth, man…this is how they should record all concerts! Amazing stuff.
