Audience 9.2 - All three shows are recorded with high end gear, with a respectful audience – and the results are decidedly excellent. It’s a joy to listen to these shows, back to back, and just marvel at the grandiosity on display. These were different times, so painfully obvious when you listen, and quite sad to realize it ain’t ever happening again. Audience 8.7 - A very well recorded show by all accounts. The sound is round, and has nice timbre. I hear everything clearly, bass sounds warm, guitars are raw and jangly…basically this sounds like the Stones in a club and it’s anything but a club! Audience 8.7 - This show features the return to the Spectrum, a venue they had recently played and for some reason decided that they needed to schedule another show there (perhaps they felt the last show there was below par?). Anyway, by all accounts it’s a better gig, and the audio quality is also better with clearer sound and better separation of instruments. The recording levels are a touch low, so you will have to turn up the volume (trust me it won’t distort or break up, it will get even better). Sounds like someone handed Joe Perry the wrong guitar heading onto stage because he is way out of tune! He tries to tune on the fly, but sounds like he is given another guitar and things improve. A weird start to a show! The band cranks through its classics at this point, an entertaining show to these ears. Good quality for a 1977 gig, straight from the taper. Enjoy! -
Soundboard 8.7 - A show that factors in to what would become a stellar career over many decades. Pretty much on her own now (no longer paired with Gram Parsons R.I.P.) she started playing in the clubs in the DC area when a producer came to record this show for future reference as he crafted her breakout solo album. Did she know he was at the gig? Who knows, but she obviously made an impact. Morrison & Jeff Wisor on tracks 7-11 (disc 2) {After Gram Parsons's death} Emmy moved back to D.C., where Tom Guidera had also become a country music convert. With pedal steel player Danny Pendleton and two other musicians, they put together the Angel Band and started gigging around the clubs, playing some of the songs she’d performed with Gram. Eddie Tickner made Harris his number one priority and he convinced Mary Martin, an A&R representative from Warner/Reprise Records (the label that had released Parsons’ solo work) to investigate an Angel Band show in a Washington nightclub. Emmylou Harris became a Reprise Records recording artist in 1974; with her daughter Hallie in tow, the Angel Band relocated to Los Angeles to begin work on Harris’s first true solo album. To produce, Martin paired Harris up with Nova Scotia native Brian Ahern, the mastermind behind Anne Murray’s spate of hits in the early 70’s. She brought the quiet Canadian to hear the Angel Band, and he recorded the performance on a hand-held cassette machine to study at home. This sounds better than a hand-held cassette machine recording, purportedly a sound board, but it's not by any means what we think of as soundboard quality by today's standards. -
Soundboard 9.4 - A very cool, immediate and high impact sound and vibe…and the band, My God! Not all of their shows had that insane intensity and sharpness…sometimes they wandered and lost focus but not here…no way. This…is…amazing! Play this for your kids’ friends when they try to impress you with some new flavor of the month band they are into. Ha! Soundboard 9.7 - Crisp and elegant, this describes both the music and the audio fidelity here. The band is in really fine form, actually a good time period. Soundboard 9.4 - Minor hiss present in quiet passages but does not impact any music. This is a great show, impressive in every regard especially the incendiary guitar work by unheralded master Daryl Stuermer. Many people were first introduced to Ponty through this album, Imaginary Voyage, and it’s on full display here in a live setting. EXCELLENT!! Audience 8.8 - I can’t fault this too much even though it is not a tape without a certain sonic limitation – but it’s not enough of a fault to be critical of what is a fantastic performance paired with a warm, energy filled tape. It’s a great capture that barely holds the intensity before it begins to break-up, albeit only slightly, as the volume overwhelms the microphone. Is that bad? Normally it spells disaster if the recording equipment is, say, a realistic or some no-name generic piece of crap but this taper is obviously using high end stuff. The point at which volume and intensity causes normal gear to fail only slightly bother this set-up. So, I recommend it as one of the better 1976 tapes out there. It’s simply great and you’ll love it. Audience 8.3 - Not recorded from the best vantage point on the best gear, but taper made the best of it, and it gets incrementally better from the time where he moves to a better spot (closer). Tape has all the hallmarks of a large stadium, loud rock concert, the regular deal…not going to blow anyone away. Now that I’ve said that, there’s some good news! Yup – Pete is playing great and he is the clearest sounding, followed by Roger, and the bass has a good, deep, rumbling growl that comes through (NOT boomy!). If this tape had been boomy, I would have rated it in the upper 7’s. First song, first row behind the stage looking at Keiths Moon’s back. Track two starts and I’m looking for a better recording position. The stage has typical left and right arrays but there was also an extra array on the right side facing the stage. Strangely not one to the left side. I parked myself in front of it which was basically just above me. On minor movement towards the center of the arena on the right side to avoid two chicks with whistles and the remaining show was recorded in that position. -

Audience 8.6 - A recording that is very clear but dangerously close to being too crisp on the highs…but thankfully it doesn’t sizzle and ruin anything. It’s still very good – might could use more thickness, but you will probably be able to enjoy this show and certainly are welcome to boost the low end which will help. Soundboard 9.1 - This mix favors Mick Jagger, but I like the very lifelike feel of it overall. It’s not super well separated but everything can be heard well enough and that includes the piano (although horns are pushed back), and Mick Taylor is especially present when he solos (an added bonus!). There is no doubt that this recording must be present in every Rolling Stones fan’s collection. Audience 8.6 - Small club vibe and really good sound with an emphasis on percussion clarity and presence. Recording leans to the mid and upper end but it’s not too brittle there, so it’s very comfortable but can use some added low end anyway. Aside from that, this is quite good. Led by singer Richard Butler and his brother Tim Butler on bass. The Psychedelic Furs are one of the many acts spawned from the British post-punk scene. Their debut album was in 1980. But in 1982, the band were reduced to a four-piece. The Furs did find success in the US with their next release, 1981's Talk Talk Talk, which included the original version of "Pretty in Pink", which was later re-recorded for the 1986 movie soundtrack "Pretty in Pink". This movie would help launch Molly Ringwald's acting career. -
Audience 8.5 - A thin-ish recording, but it is pretty clear and thus can be appreciated. It’s a really fine performance too. Audience 8.3 - What is happening with this tape is that the bass frequencies are too much for the microphone, and it causes some peaking (not pure distortion, just level peak). On the plus side, it’s relatively open in all the other frequencies, meaning you can actually listen to this show and once your ears sort of adjust to the limitations, it’s not that bad. I would still call this one for hardcore collectors only though, even when there is a shortage of 1979 tapes.
