• New Haven 1975 Audience 9.0 - Nice one here, a lovely guitar tone that rings out clear and true, so close you can put yourself in tapers seats! Only heard one small drop out, there’s another somewhere else but I don’t recall. Only lasted a few seconds. Either way, this is truly an electrifying tape and I have to say I think it can be considered a must have. Tulsa 1975 Audience 8.6 -A recently re-mastered version has appeared, and thankfully so because this tape suffered serious hiss and muddiness before. Now, there’s some hiss remaining but not near as much, and layer after layer of muck has been removed revealing a fine tape, and a blistering performance. Detroit 1976 Audience 9.1 - Electric atmosphere, almost palpable as you settle into a great show by a guitar master. Band is hot, audience is responding…a great night for rock and roll! • Stoke 1974 Audience 8.4 - A loud tape with a touch of stadium boom, but not anything that approaches irritation. It sounds like it’s in stereo, I hear guitar in one channel and bass in the other which is kinda cool. The instruments are all clearly discernible here making for a tape that sits on the upper side of very good. Tulsa 1975 Audience 8.7 - A tape that has a good, snappy live sound and a pretty good mix for the ears.  The music is delivered to you through a tight mid-range and a snare drum that hovers over everything making it instantly delightful. I rather do like this one! Orange, France 1975 Audience 8.8 - A fine tape, one that really has good separation of instruments, and very decent dynamics. When the guitar solos, the sound seems to glide above you, so that kind of effect and atmosphere puts this show into a category I call “Repeat Listening” because you will go to it again. Amsterdam 1976 Audience 8.8 - Brassy, but enough mid and bottom to smooth that out nicely. A touch of cymbal sizzle but again there’s enough of all other frequencies here that not any one stands out in an annoying fashion. This is a well-balanced tape with some real life in it. • Atlanta 1977 Audience 8.6 - At times the tape shines (quieter sections) but for the louder parts (most of the concert) the bass overtakes guitar, and the bass is not boomy so it is not an annoying thing it’s more of a live mix thing. Clarity is very good but not great, frequencies are all intact here, the sound can breathe a little, it’s not a bad tape and it is not a great tape…and I think the consensus is that you would benefit from having it in the collection. Louisville 1977 Audience 8.7 - The sound here borders on distortion but manages to stay within a sane level of tolerance due to exceptional re-mastering (which is so difficult, to keep highs and mids but lose clipping, it’s a task I would not want myself). If taper was able to manage his levels, this would have been one of the best audience tapes of all time…you can hear the quality, but yeah, some problems there with the upper level distortion keep it as a very good tape as opposed to extremely great. Still, I have to say this is well worth having. Milwaukee 1977 Audience 8.2 - This is the kind of tape that is hard to get through without needing some major adjusting. I can tell you only that even after careful re-mastering, it is still an average tape with some decent moments but mostly difficult on the ears. It’s saving grace?  It’s a brand new discovery, and is only popping up for the first time since it was first recorded. I enjoyed the quieter parts (such as Wish You Were Here, and the acoustic portions of the Pigs suites). • Lakeland 1980 Soundboard 9.3 - So it’s the early 1980’s and I have to be honest but I would not have given Prince a chance. But, listening to these recordings today I hear real drums, crunchy guitars with an almost psychedelic tone, and confident rhythm section all belting out some decent funk and pop (although I don’t quite hear the precedent to superstardom). Interesting in hindsight. Columbia 1980 Soundboard 9.3 - Early period Prince already showing so much confidence on the live stage. Excellent sound! • Ultrasonic Studios 1969 Pro Studio 9.4 - Excellent stuff, I’d never heard this one before and I was pleasantly surprised to finally hear such pristine unofficial tracks by this great band. Tucson 1972 Audience 8.7 - A rambly, jambly sounding tape that allows you to hear every instrument with emphasis on drums, vocals and keyboards believe it or not…in such a way that sucks you right into it almost as if it were at a revival meeting. Yes, there’s a tiny amount of overload here (understandable) but I gotta tell you, this is a very, very exciting recording. Memphis 1972 Soundboard 9.7 - Scintillating stuff!  Razor sharp guitar, pounding drums, and beautiful bass all interwoven and mixed for maximum clarity and separation of instruments. They were smart to allow some bleed from the audience to give this tape plenty of electric live atmosphere. SUPERB! • Metropolitan Opera House NY 1970 Audience 8.4 - A decent tape considering we have very few US 1970 tour audience tapes that sound great. A little sweetening with EQ and you’ve just raised the sound rating another half a point…technology has changed the way collectors think about these old audience source tapes. Newcastle 1971 Audience 8.7 - A surprising new find!  Buried for decades and now dusted off, restored and presented for your approval. It’s not bad!  I can hear it all, with some cool atmosphere. I rather like it! San Francisco 1971 Audience 8.8 - This tape has some depth to it, where you get definition in the bass and not just “low end” which I appreciate. Roger rises above in the sound mix but on this tape nobody is drowned out, it’s evenly mixed and that makes it enjoyable. Some background noise which sounds like it is coming from the house PA but not during the band performing…all in all this is a real good one. • Nazareth Radio City Music Hall 1976 Audience 9.2 - Opening for Deep Purple, the band has something to prove…and prove it they did! In excellent, mind-bending sonic POWER – the kick drum literally will kick your skull in – the crowd extending their pleasure with every note.  For those only familiar with their two radio staples, you will most certainly want to re-examine this band’s output after hearing this. I know I did! Deep Purple Radio City Music Hall 1976 Audience 9.1 - This is a long awaited tape for many people who craved to hear the late Tommy Bolin with the band in at least above average quality. This is way above average! Now, it is not perfect, I would have liked more guitar in the house mix, but still you can’t deny the power and excitement of this recording. • Soundboard 8.9 - Kinda cool when you get these board tapes that pan a guitar, and then one other lead instrument to the other side, which in this case is keyboards. I think this allows for an examination of the instrument in question, so you might find yourself listening once and concentrating on guitar, then another time you’ll give drums and keys more attention…and that is why this show might have you coming back several times for more.  Interesting! • Audience 8.2 - A loud and raucous tape, with a band of noise in the upper mid frequency that prevents better separation of instruments. Saving grace?  Duane is the clearest instrument on this recording – in fact it is his guitar that soars over the sound to the degree that you almost inevitably focus solely on him throughout.  As it happens, Gregg’s vocals are next up in the mix.
