Boston 1970 Audience 8.4 - The separation of instruments here is rather dense, not muddy, just not to a degree one would prefer. The sound itself is not bad, I actually do hear every instrument I just want certain things prominent when it comes to this band…I really need more detail in the guitar solos. I still think this is a good one for the collection – the band is not afraid to stretch out and jam, they have tremendous freedom onstage and it shows. Los Angeles 1970 Audience 9.3 - This is a sparkling recording, my guess is that the same crew that taped the infamous Zeppelin Blueberry Hill did this as well. To me it sounds similar. Audience 9.5 - This deserves a high rating because it does much more than document a live concert…it transports you back to the event in a way that a soundboard tape cannot. It immerses you into the experience, with depth, clarity, dynamics, and atmosphere. What a tape! Get it. Soundboard 9.2 - Strong and clear as a board should be, but probably not mixed for a live album release, more for front of house sound which explains the interesting way the two guitars are panned…I rather like it. This allows you to really get the musicality of the performance and that is where this tape literally takes off. The playing is top shelf and worthy of paying serious attention to. On a side note, every now and then there will be a tape problem that resolves itself right away and I think this is present on the master. It is not a deal breaker at all, it happens few and far between. Audience 9.1 - A great tape that ramps up the intensity and puts you in the front row. This show has been put out before but never sounding as good as this. Wowsers! Chicago 1971 FM Radio broadcast 8.9 - Some generation loss and general passing of time has degraded the sound slightly but this version received a “freshening” which helps a lot. So, it’s a bona fide solid addition to anyone’s collection. Memphis 1971 Audience 8.3 - I had the luxury of being able to hear this tape before it was remastered and that would be the only way you can really appreciate how that simply removed what sounded like a layer of muck and grime, and revealed a shimmering sound that leapt out of the speakers… I am talking of course about Duane’s guitar. So, if you want to appreciate again what the guitar playing of Duane Allman was really all about then this recording will still cause shivers down your spine. Is it a great recording?  Not really, but there’s something here that still pulls you in (mainly it’s Duane). Austin 1971 Soundboard 9.0 - A tape that, while incomplete (some songs fade in and fade out, mainly the first and last) still has to be carefully considered when examining the few remaining live recordings featuring Duane. Audience 8.6 - OK, so this is one you might not be too familiar with, but it’s from ’79 so you know you gotta have it…so what’s the catch?  Does it suck? Naw man, this recording actually captures THE EVENT in a way that sounds so realistic you’d think you were there. Now, here’s the catch – poor taper’s gear just was not quite up to the challenge of the volume and so there’s the little tiniest bit of distortion that affects one very narrow piece of the middle bandwidth that thankfully is not the annoying kind of distortion, it’s not a deal breaker. It does mean you may not wish to crank this up too loud as the louder it gets the more that frequency announces its presence to your ears. That being said, if you want complete immersion this tape provides it and then some. For that reason I think you have to dive in, I did and I really do appreciate this kind of tape.
