• Soundboard 9.1 - This is not a bad board tape, leans just a touch maybe on the more trebly side, giving bass the title of “second guitar” I guess. Still, it’s not a static board, it’s very exciting. Led Zeppelin Eisstadion Mannheim, Germany July 3rd 1980. • Audience 8.7 - Both tapes sound as if they were recorded by the same person they are very similar although the slight nod goes to London for being just a touch brighter. That being said, both tapes do an admirable job (for 1971 standards) of capturing the epic ferocity of this amazing rock band in their prime, or just before they got universal “commercial” success. It’s hard to imagine what it must have been like being there in person, the volume, the intensity, I would have been drained after the first song! • Audience 9.1 - Capturing the unbridled excitement of the flamboyant maestro in his prime in Los Angeles during perhaps his biggest tour. • Audience 9.2 - A very interesting tour that featured just two individuals on stage working in coordination to bring audiences a new perspective on Elton’s music…and it works marvelously. Audio quality here is great, and that is a huge benefit to the listener as they get to enjoy the subtleties of what is happening on stage, including the witty banter between songs. • Audience 9.3 - As good as it could be for a large stadium concert. Despite the soundmen fighting mic feedback issues during the first few songs, it certainly gets dialed in and becomes quite nice with the feeling of this being an event, the atmosphere, the way the sound sort of envelopes your ears and you get a sense of size and space. Really sweet!

  • Cleveland 1981 is an FM Broadcast 9.2 which I had not heard before believe it or not, so, I was suitably impressed. Anyone would be appreciative! The second disc (and most of the 3rd) is Montreal 81 and is an FM Broadcast 8.9 due to a more subdued signal that does not take away any frequency range but rather slightly compresses the sound just a bit. Now I want the listener to realize that this is a subjective opinion, technically speaking the audio here is excellent so it’s a matter of personal taste in this case. The second half of disc 3 is all studio quality. • FM Broadcast 8.8 A tape recorded off air sounding its age but surprisingly it’s actually decent enough that fans of this venerable band will rejoice at hearing such an early gig in very good quality. If you compare it to a typical FM broadcast you’ll be less ecstatic, but I tell you this: in the year 1982 there were few bands that could match the intensity and precision of Iron Maiden. This gig highlights that fact, personally I can’t recommend this one highly enough I loved it! IRON MAIDEN The Beast on the Road Tour Pavillon Baltard Nogent-sur-Marne, France March, 24th 1982 01. • SDBRD 9.4 /Audience 8.1/Audience 8.8/Audience 8.3 - A comprehensive collection but not everything is represented here, but I would say the more complete recordings are…and so, well, what you get is a pretty mixed bag. The good stuff is very good, and the not so good stuff is…not so good. What does it mean? Should I get this 4 disc set?  Yes you should if you care anything at all about this seminal band. There just isn’t a whole lot of live “bootleg” recordings because they predate the era of the taper – not to say there aren’t tapes from 1967-1968 because there are, but not nearly as plentiful or as good as tapes that were made subsequently. That being said, I still found myself listening to everything in this set because you can’t argue the fact that hearing Jeff Beck or Jimmy Page before they were rock gods is immensely interesting. • Audience 9.2 - Even with the well known acoustics of Carnegie Hall being not ideal for taping (but very good for “live” concert hall sound), this taper did an admiral job. The sound is crisp, vibrant, and has great atmospherics. Obviously without that over-amped rock star PA insanity you get with most concert hall audience tapes of that time, this is more acoustic, generally speaking and therefore the sound does not get crowded or distorted. • Audience 8.9 - Thankfully we have this amazing document because it’s quite fascinating. The sound is clear and bright, and has LOADS of ambience and immersive quality although I would not say it is “deep” or very rich sounding. It’s certainly kind of a typical guerilla recording but that someone went through the trouble and actually got the whole show in admirable fashion to me is the amazing part. The audience response to Donovan is the other amazing part and lends a lot to the excitement of the show. Really, really interesting one! • Soundboard 9.2 - This is the complete recording featuring both sets (previously available as an edited down version) and is notable for the amazing version of Dark Star, although the gig is expertly performed, that track really stands out. The sound is clean (almost too clean) and does have a “rounded” sound, there’s no jangly edges here so crank it up for a better experience. • SDBRD 9.2 - Would be rated even higher but for the fact that vocals are non-existent in this mix. Well, if you care about the lyrics, get a lyric sheet – meanwhile, the music is fine with a guitar clinic being put on by Clapton. Later in the set, the sound switches over to an audience recording (7.2) and the vocals and bass return. The main difference between this one and the one already listed here is that this is just the Tulip Bulb Auction Hall show without additional material (date here is correct) and different, I would say better, artwork.

  • Audience 9.0 - A small club atmosphere puts you up close to the band and the respectful audience. The music is all-encompassing, it’s space rock with emphasis on rock, and It is quite interesting. Quality is clear, it’s not super dynamic but you can really sink into this recording and what is extra cool is the taper stayed for both sets leading me to believe they were connected to the band or their management. • Pro Recording 9.3 - The reason this is not listed as a soundboard (and it very well may be) is because they way it was recorded sounds like they may have hung microphones rather than direct through board. • Audience 9.7 and Soundboard 9.3 - Opening for ELP, this is the short lived Robert Fleischman period just before the arrival of Steve Perry. Hard to find anything about this recording to complain about, it’s amazingly life-like and extremely dynamic – about the only fault is how short it is. Taper arrived late, but makes up for it with a stellar recording. • Audience 8.7  - This tape has one thing really going for it, and that is it is surprisingly clear, maybe not super close to the stage but that means there’s no distortion…there’s also no boominess, and there’s some good live atmosphere. The mix is decent, and overall this tape can be really enjoyed by anyone but let me tell you why I love it – because they play my fave Thin Lizzy song “Opium Trail” so there ya go. • Audience 9.5 - What makes this one so special is that it is a COMPLETE document of the entire processes that unfold while a performance is orchestrated. That means you will hear the entire soundcheck (a concert in itself), the show in its entirety, and the Aftershow. All of this occurs over two days, and let me tell you when I say it is immersive, I mean in the literal sense you are completely immersed from start to finish. Even the sonic quality is excellent although I understand this is entirely subjective. For me, I loved it. I loved being in the crowd and even the screams and oohs and aaahs added a real sense of realism and were not obnoxious at all. The mix and balance of the sound is so good, I love the drums, guitars are really present and vocals are in a good spot. It’s quite magical in many respects, and really I think the quality is not disappointing considering some re-mastering of the tape has been done and it helps. • Audience/SBRD 8.8/9.3 - This is the good stuff. Both shows excellent, the Osaka aud. tape is quite good, very lively and clear. • CD reissue from Shadoks Music of an album that originally came out in 1972. The band hailed from Iceland. (Sealed, jewel case)
  • Issued by Mandus Music.  Brand New and never played. UK import.
  • Soundboard 9.2 & Audience 9.7 - Right away you are going to question this rating. Most of you will be familiar with the ’69 set as it is well traveled and professionally recorded and as such has a purity about it. Now, I like it, I like the purity and clarity and all of that, but just listen to the raw audience tape from 1972 and then tell me it doesn’t deserve the rating I give it. If you don’t hear the unbridled intensity, the electricity zapping the entire stadium and coming through your speakers directly into your head at full throttle, than just stop collecting right now and take up another hobby, maybe crochet or something. • Audience 8.8 - This rates highly as a new audio tape discovery from decades ago you might have low expectations but it’s a good, clear (but for Alice being a little low in the mix) and I would say powerful show in sound and performance. • Audience 8.9 - A strong tape here, with very open, spacious sound and pleasant high end. It could benefit from more bottom but it’s not what I would call “thin” sounding. • Audience 8.6 - This old tape has been extensively reworked to present a fan favorite in as good of quality as ever. It’s not a great tape recording but it’s actually kind of a charmer, this is due in part because this old theater was a favorite venue for many of the classic UK prog and Canterbury groups of the time. It’s a very appealing concert, you can kind of sense the band relishes it. • Audience 8.5-9.1 All in all, for what you are privy to hear in this collection (some pretty darn rare bits!), it’s pretty good and listenable. It sounds to me that the band, from 1973 and again a few years later in 1975/78 REALLY progressed, it’s almost like night and day. I do like the early, raw stuff because it shows what a band can become if given half a chance. Judas Priest Rarities 1973-1981 Disc 1 London May 10, 1973 First gig with Halford 1. Cheater 2. • FM Broadcast 8.8 -  A radio broadcast that was captured to cassette. I'd almost call it an audience recording because it’s kind of got that same sort of feel except for the vocals and the bass as they have this quality to it that reminds me more of FM broadcasts. Be that as it may, it’s a good one from 1979 which doesn’t seem to be as well represented as either the year before or after. KANSAS MONOLITH IN THE STORM Alpine Valley East Troy, WI.
