Audience 8.3 - Somewhat thin and rather raucus, with an outdoor venue quality and perhaps taper somewhere right in the middle – not close up and not too far – but even so, I find the guitar almost too overwhelming and can imagine what it was for the concert-goers that day. So, if you like your guitar really loud, here is your tape. Audience 8.8 - Frighteningly close to the stage with a good, clear sound! The dynamics and clarity of “Out On The Western Plain” is spooky, it’s literally as if Rory was sitting there in your living room. Audience 9.0 - A really good recording seemingly done on good Japanese gear so you get a sense of placement, good sonic clarity and guitar tone is dialed in. A recording like this kind of adds that realism factor…I like that! Audience 8.5 - At first it’s a little over-driven and very harsh but it all smoothes out and becomes an astonishing document…still rather crude but powerful and all instruments are heard. I was transfixed by this, by the band’s tightness and such excellent guitar! Wow, to have been there… Disc two is a very rare document of the John Kay Band opening for Steppenwolf in 1972 and is also very good…and very Steppenwolfy as you could imagine. Audience 8.8 - A great tape here! I heard pretty much everything happening on stage, and the mix is not bad. Audience 8.6 - This tape does not offer a wide dynamic range, but neither is it compressed sounding, so it’s not awful on the ears. The good thing about capturing a band like Genesis during live performances is that the PA and mix is usually good, and not a distorted metal mess, so even average gear can produce reasonably good results. Audience 8.7 - Sound resides somewhere in the mid range and does not feature well defined high end but does have a warm, round bottom to it. The mix does not favor any one instrument, it’s rather even, and all in all the listening experience, while not exceptional in any way, is also not offensive. Audience 8.3 - A dusty old tape, with signs of age including a bit of tape hiss. Sounds to me like this old tape could have benefited greatly from some remastering work but as it is, it’s listenable and a very fiery performance by the band. I like that you can hear every instrument, I think this recording has promise and I hope it gets a facelift soon. Studio and Live 8.7 – 9.9 - A beautiful collection of recordings featuring the three original members (Tommy Shannon, Uncle John Turner, Johnny Winter) during various time periods over the decades. Most notable are the inclusion of some very rare 1969 studio sessions, and reunion material taken from Willie Nelson’s Arlyn Studios back in 1992. This material is outstanding and has yet to be officially released. Audience 8.8 - This is what we all look forward to as Rush collectors, another great, and rare, Rush show from one of their best time periods. While not quite as clear as the Boston 79, this tape gives us a great aural spectrum for our ears to delight in. Bright, and plenty of good atmosphere while retaining a tight focus even in a large arena. Rush Richfield Coliseum Cleveland, OH. Soundboard 9.7 - I saw this band around the same time and I can tell you it’s great that there are board tapes around because even though they were spectacular live, the sound was very dense and there’s a lot going on. With this tape you can hear it all in glorious quality, it’s prime stuff, psychedelic rock taken to the next level. Audience 8.8 - On the rarity scale this is one of those needle in a haystack recordings. It’s an obscure “group” (actually just a duo but here it sounds like they have some accompaniment), and the music straddles the fence between fold psyche and space rock (that’s a good thing). I would say this couple was trying to stretch something as far as they could in the context of a “folk” duo. Interesting material, very positive vibes! Emtidi Quarter Latin Berlin, Germany 1973 01. Audience 9.2 - A lively, airy, and detailed (especially with percussion and vocals) recording. Audience 9.5 - Astounding! Not just for the excellent sound but the dynamics are so present here, you get lush, rich lows and then all the way up through the spectrum including detailed but not sizzling highs. Combine all that with the energy of Tusk performed with a marching band at the LA Forum and man, yeah, this is the stuff!
