Pro Recording 9.3 - The reason this is not listed as a soundboard (and it very well may be) is because they way it was recorded sounds like they may have hung microphones rather than direct through board. In this case I find the recording to be more preferable to the “dry” board mix, here you get some atmosphere and it helps immensely! Audience 8.9 - Thankfully we have this amazing document because it’s quite fascinating. The sound is clear and bright, and has LOADS of ambience and immersive quality although I would not say it is “deep” or very rich sounding. It’s certainly kind of a typical guerilla recording but that someone went through the trouble and actually got the whole show in admirable fashion to me is the amazing part. The audience response to Donovan is the other amazing part and lends a lot to the excitement of the show. Really, really interesting one! Audience 9.2 - Even with the well known acoustics of Carnegie Hall being not ideal for taping (but very good for “live” concert hall sound), this taper did an admiral job. The sound is crisp, vibrant, and has great atmospherics. Obviously without that over-amped rock star PA insanity you get with most concert hall audience tapes of that time, this is more acoustic, generally speaking and therefore the sound does not get crowded or distorted. Audience 9.2 - A very interesting tour that featured just two individuals on stage working in coordination to bring audiences a new perspective on Elton’s music…and it works marvelously. Audio quality here is great, and that is a huge benefit to the listener as they get to enjoy the subtleties of what is happening on stage, including the witty banter between songs. If you were sitting in tapers seats, your ears are now hearing what his ears heard at the time. That is all you can hope for and that is what this tape is. Audience 8.8 - Excellent recording for the time period when it seemed most audience tapes sounded very flat and tinny. This one is pretty dynamic but for one fault (not tapers fault). The PA system, while good, did not give vocals enough clarity. During quieter passages, yes, but in louder parts (most of the gig) it’s sort of indistinct, but audible and not buried (just not real distinct). I mean, he’s totally audible is what I am getting at, but for some reason I can’t make out anything he’s singing about (is this par for the course with Marillion?). BTW the Genesis comparisons are accurate! Soundboard 8.8 - It’s kind of hard to rate this any higher due to the extreme hotness in the recording levels but it rates as high as it does because it’s unique among board tapes in that Mick Jagger sounds so live and in your face it’s like he’s singing next to you…scary I know. Now, just because this is a “hot” tape doesn’t mean you can’t hear anything, it’s all there but it’s all pretty forcefully delivered. I can’t say in this case it’s entirely a bad thing…’cause it does make for a rather “intimate” encounter with the Stones, especially you know who. Audience 9.5 - Brilliant! After sound adjustments the PA system just cranks out the best, clearest sound you could hope for. Almost everything is clear and balanced in the mix, I mean it ain’t perfect (for instance we don’t get the best balance between Keith and Ron) but it’s darn good. The sound mix has nothing to do with how well the audio capture is but it factors slightly in the rating. Audience 9.3 - A sweet recording that is so comfortable to listen to, so easy on the ears with a nice rolling bass and present but not obtrusive drums. Mick is above the fray where he should be and guitars swirl and hum beneath him…excellent! Audience 9.1 - A great sounding capture that is just a little further back than the previous night…still it’s really good because the dynamic range is wide and warm. The sound mix itself is not heavy on the guitars here, it’s really Mick and drums followed by the low rumble of the bass. Guitars are here just not the spotlight instrument which in my opinion I prefer them front and center. Alas, I found myself able to appreciate the contributions of everyone else for once. Audience 8.8 - This tape is fascinating! Really gives the listener exactly what they might have experienced attending this concert, a sort of audio time capsule in very good quality but more than that it is LOADED with electric atmosphere. You get a very good sense of time and space. Fantastic! There is one caveat…a microphone drop out does occur towards the end of the show that kind of spoils the flow but it was not something that seemed like taper error so all is forgiven. Audience 9.7 - Brilliant recording and an example of what you can do if you have excellent gear, perfect acoustics, and good placement. This version of the Chick Corea 1978 tour does not feature a full band ensemble but rather a more natural, non electrified direction which allows the players to really showcase their talents without much competition for the sound space.
