Hard blues rock band formed in 1975 in Houston, TX. Featured vocalist BB. Watson who left Houston to pursue a career in Nashville as a C&W singer. He had some fleeting success, eventually came back to Houston and worked with Michael Knust (Fever Tree) and Keith York (Albatross, Rare Breed) for a stint and also attempted to reunite the Rare Breed (those sessions contained on this CD). Rare Breed also featured the guitar of Robert Hampton before he joined Hooker. These are all the known recordings.

Audience 9.5 - You can relax into this show, it's occupying a very pleasant space when the soundwaves wash over you and you begin to have a sense of the size of the venue, the space around you, and the distance from the stage. That's what I like about smaller venue recordings, and modern taping gear is getting so much better with the mic technology and level adjust that it's really hard to screw it up. Audience 9.2 - Here we have a real treat for those who now realize what we had in our youths with the "Seattle Sound" as epitomized by Soundgarden, a sound that fit the times very appropriately. Now for the kicker: This show not only sounds great but has plenty of fun moments with Chris Cornell and the audience (I think he's a bit toasty on the potent German suds). What I liked most is the live sound here is mixed well for the guitars especially, only Chris gets a bit drowned out during the extreme volume heavier parts but overall it's hitting the sweet spot, at least for me.SOUNDGARDEN April 1, 1994 Musikhalle Frankfurt, Germany Disc 1 01. Audience 8.7 - While this tape may not enjoy the same clarity as some of the Japan 82 recordings, it does have a good powerful delivery nonetheless. Vocals come through the clearest, but the combination of bass, and guitars follows with the force of a piledriver to your skull...and I rather like it. The bonus here is the inclusion of the set by the band The Rods, and having never heard of any live tapes of them before, it was a most welcome addition to this great vintage Iron Maiden set.Iron Maiden Colston Hall Bristol, England 1982-03-11 Disc 1 {79:49} 01 - Intro [Doctor Doctor] ........ 3:39 02 - The Ides of March ............ 0:51 03 - Murders in the Rue Morgue .... 3:28 04 - Wrathchild ................... 3:32 05 - Run to the Hills ............. 4:25 06 - Children of the Damned ....... 4:46 07 - The Number of the Beast ...... 5:31 08 - Another Life ................. 3:43 09 - Killers ...................... 5:39 10 - 22 Acacia Avenue ............. 6:31 11 - Total Eclipse ................ 4:12 12 - Drum Solo .................... 3:20 13 - Transylvania ................. 6:12 14 - The Prisoner ................. 5:48 15 - Hallowed Be Thy Name ......... 7:14 16 - Phantom of the Opera ......... 6:51 17 - Iron Maiden .................. 3:58 Disc 2 {63:50} 01 - Sanctuary .................... 6:52 02 - Drifter ...................... 7:46 03 - Running Free ................. 5:03 04 - Prowler ...................... 4:32 Bonus Rods 05 - Rocking And Rolling .......... 3:26 06 - Waiting For Tomorrow ......... 4:02 07 - Get Ready To Rock 'n' Roll ... 5:34 08 - Nothing Going On In The City . 3:32 09 - Too Hot To Stop .............. 4:07 10 - Crank It Up .................. 5:54 11 - Getting Higher ............... 3:42 12 - Drum Solo .................... 3:50 13 - Power Lover .................. 5:23

Soundboard 8.7 - What we have here with these two shows are a couple of primitive soundboards, and by that I mean they may have run the sound through the board but what ended up on the tape is NOT what you would expect. It's not a manicured, expert mix and pristine sound, it's a very raw, brutal, loud, obnoxious, hellish, and violent turbulence of sound that somehow fits the vibe to a tee. This is Slayer, in 1985, and it sounds like it. Wonderful in its rawness, brutal in its aggressive sonic assault, and 100% vintage Slayer.

Audience 8.7 All shows appear to have been recorded by the same taper who was diligent to show up to all the Sabbath shows in his town three years in a row. I am impressed with his effort, you can tell he's not an amateur and but for the fact he's not using pro equipment, he most certainly would otherwise have gotten a stellar result. As it is, it's fine but not winning any dynamics awards. What it does deliver is consistent, strong, error-free recordings that you can relax into, and let yourself adjust to what is there because it's certainly not that bad. I started listening to these shows in order to rate them and ended up just letting them play because it's cool to hear this great line-up playing in a far away place away from the glitz and glamour of the metropolis, year-after-year-after-year, and yet deliver a performance no different from one they might have done at, say, Radio City Music Hall or Madison Square Garden.

Audience 8.7 - An excellent 8.7 too! First off let me just say how blown away I am to find a long lost 1978 recording previously un-circulated and in such great shape! Wow man, this is a fantastic find. The sound is pretty beefy for what sounds like an old tape deck, normally you'd expect something either thin as hell or muddy as crap but it's neither. It lacks a little clarity, but it's maybe near the drums and I can tell you guitar sounds clear (maybe a little thin but bass is pretty solid so it picks up the guitar sound a bit) and Ozzy is situated in the middle and can be heard pretty well. A solid tape that will fit nicely in with your collection.

Neunkirchen Audience 8.8 - A large sound, almost feel the sound pressure against your chest on this one! The bass is huge and guitars sit slightly behind creating a sensation of dread, and thankfully the vocals are really placed very nicely in the live sound mix. Definitely the better of the two in this set.
Boblingen 1983 Audience 8.6 The overall sound here is somewhat average but it's actually slightly clearer than the Neunkirchen show albeit more distant and hollow sounding. It really could use some mid-range boost to bring up the guitars but if you have a good system you can attenuate this to dial in your desired EQ. It's not bad, it's just not quite up to prime time and you'll get more satisfaction from the Neunkirchen show in this set.

Stereo Soundboard 9.6 - A fantastic and interesting tape, the live mix sometimes pans in stereo giving it a unique flavor. The drums and keyboards are placed superbly in the mix, vocals very strong, but it does lack some low end, not that it is thin or too bright, that is not the problem here at all it’s just that I think the bass may have been so loud through the P.A. that it didn’t need to pass through the board feed so you do hear it but it’s not super deep. Still, a great one for the collection and certainly if you like hard psychedelic rock but the kicker here is the appearance on 4 tracks by John Cipollina.

Dunstable 1976 Soundboard 9.5 - Every Hawkwind collector surely must have this already in their collection, it’s just too damn good. So few recordings of such an eclectic band, so yeah, this has to be considered a MUST HAVE, and it’s equally cool to find it paired here with another soundboard tape.
Croyden 1977 Soundboard 9.2 -A respectable board tape, the mix does heavily favor guitar, keys are present more during passages where they are supposed to be in the lead. Vocals are out front, also where they need to be. So, it’s a workable mix, not perfect but definitely good for the casual and hard-core fan.

Soundboard 9.2 - A “reference” board mix, clearly…but it’s great. It isn’t going to win any awards for sparkling and atmospheric sound, but it’s a punchy, in-the-pocket sound that marries well with Kansas’ heavy progressive style.

Soundboard 8.8 - This is a soundboard that is not without flaws, not serious flaws, but indeed somewhat noticeable ones. So, it’s one of those mixes where guitar sounds at times amazing, up front, and gloriously loud…and at others it seems like it was ran through an on-board processor of some kind and ends up more compressed and lower in the mix. Rock The Nation is cut at the tail end of Ronnie’s solo, and the drum intro for I Got The Fire begins, so that was a little bit of a jarring edit that could have been smoother. Overall this is a tape, and show, that will sit nicely in the collection seeing as how there are so few Gamma sdbrds, or live tapes at all.

Audience 9.0 - A strong recording from what sounds like the center row, maybe halfway back but not as diffuse as you might think for being in that spot. Yes, maybe the guitar and bass aren’t separated the way you would prefer, but this was the sound of Rush in 2015, and on this show it is Geddy’s vocals that receive the most prominence. Overall it’s a very good recording with atmosphere and power.

Audience 9.1 - What a find! This tape exudes raw power, and hearkens back to the original sound and style of the band much more so than what would be just a year and a half later. Does that mean it’s a raw blues rock show? No, but there is a lot of that here, and more than that it’s the TONE of the band. Gritty, mean, raw but tight…fierce! The quality of the tape is VERY good…well worth snagging!

Audience 8.7 - Brassy, loud, and guitar dominant recording that delivers where it counts and finds Rory sounding, to my ears, much more rock/metal/grunge even though he features plenty of raw, blues soaked numbers in his set. It’s just that the atmosphere and volume don’t suggest this is a “blues” band blowing through town…I just get the feeling Rory felt the times changing and adjusted accordingly. Either way you parse it, this is high-intensity music, and the recording here really manages to capture that pretty realistically.

Pro Recording 9.4 - This is actually recorded from the audience, or the pit, or somewhere within the hall with professional equipment possibly for broadcast or posterity but it is obviously not an amateur job. The dynamics and atmosphere are excellent, and to my ears it just seems like the band wanted to record this gig for whatever reason.

Audience 9.3 - A really clean, punchy recording that has realistic presence, and is river deep and mountain high – I especially found the drums, kick drum, toms, this was a pleasant surprise for an audience tape to deliver almost studio quality dynamics and placement in the stage mix was on point. Amazing to think that this tape remained out of circulation to only just recently, while we did have other shows from this week at the Hollywood Palace in 1984.

Gainesville 1978 Soundboard 9.5 - A professional straight board feed recording that is as clean and balanced as you’d ever want – but very occasionally there may be a slight tape drop out (rarely), and the sound is almost too good…meaning it could use some ambience and atmosphere but if you only want to hear this as a musical performance rather than event, this is damn near perfect.
Cincinnati 1989 Audience 9.7 - A soaring, elegant recording that captures this event in spectacular quality. Guitars seem to float over your head and wrap around your ears as they seem to pan across the room, drums filling the spaces and adding immediacy. When the audience claps and responds it’s as if it is a part of the show how it blends in and seems so respectful. Overall man this is a frighteningly good recording and performance and is pretty much in the “must have” range IMHO.

Audience 9.4 - Almost sounds like a radio broadcast, and you’d be forgiven for insisting it is such, but to me it sounds like a good transfer from vinyl of a great audience recording, with some artifacts occasionally (like momentary drop-outs). The track listing on the cover differs slightly from the disc tracking but whatever was recorded by this source is present and accounted for. Other sources exist, and are inferior, so no patching was done to fill out anything missing. Seems like a complete show, maybe one song missing?

Telluride 1978 FM Broadcast 9.2 - A little hit and miss on the live mix, where sometimes I don’t get some of the background instruments associated with the synth or whatever is happening back there…but I could be wrong about that, I mean it is rather subjective whether I am hearing the mix as the band intended or if I need something personally – no matter, because this is lovely and warm, with just enough audience sound to give you a better representation of the liveness of the recorded gig. I need that, personally, otherwise you might as well just listen to the albums!

FM Broadcast 9.3 - This recording is a little hot, it’s slightly overloaded mainly in the upper mid to high band to the point of slight sizzle on the cymbals…but because it’s so clean overall, with good mid and low end, that seems to be mitigated as the ears adjust. So, it’s great, yes a fine FM broadcast, but in the pantheon of FM broadcasts maybe the engineer got a little excited…OR maybe it’s not the case but more a situation where, when taping from a radio source, you sometimes get artifacts (might be static interference, might be signal compression, might be a whole range of things) and here you have some in the form of slightly overloaded high end. Don’t let it dissuade you though…it’s still great stuff.

Radio Broadcast 9.5 - Sparkling! This is THE one to have in my opinion – the sound is really good and very vibrant. One can truly appreciate what made this band so special, despite their lack of commercial success (as it that is a measure of talent anyway).

Audience 8.8 - A tape that had the bones of a great recording but was buried under prevalent hiss and overall dullness…until now. A marvelous re-mastering has been done on this long forgotten old tape and it is now a little jewel for the collectors. A lot of good stuff lies herein.

Audience 8.8 - Previously available as a single track, Watcher Of The Skies was merely a taste of a tantalizing recording that has now been painstakingly restored from the original master cassette and it reveals much more than collectors could have imagined. A really good tape it is, with a nice intimate clarity (relative to the overall mix) of vocals, and a satisfying “thwack” of the drums…I found myself mesmerized by this show and especially a sparkling rendition of “Supper’s Ready”.

Soundboard 9.4 - First of all, this is a guitar fest, and definitely seems a harder rockin’ affair than what one might expect…notwithstanding the more acoustic songs…those seem to rock too! I suppose that is what happens when you have guys like Mick Taylor and Ian MacLagen in the band!

Audience 9.2 - I rate this one highly because it has a unique quality to it. First though, it’s a good recording, but interestingly it gives a clear and powerful representation to the often overlooked and seldom FELT kick drum. This instrument is kind of crucial to the sound of a heavy metal band, especially one whose primary power source is closer to the bottom end of the sound spectrum. So, a nicely defined and powerful kick drum propels this show in ways others do not. Highly recommended!

Audience 9.6 - Both shows in this set are phenomenal. I love the close, very intimate feel of the venues and the capture being so good for both shows…a joy to listen to this! Audience 9.0 - A really fine attempt to capture a loud metal band in a small club. Thankfully it seems the taper came prepared, he found his spot and delivers a stable recording of the entire show. Soundboard 9.4 - A newly remastered version of the matinee soundboard show in all it’s glory restored – with bonus material from Seattle, this is well worth re-examining because I found it to be a really pro job, and you don’t have to suffer through the inferior audience tape thrown in because quite honestly there would be no point at all.
