Radio/TV Broadcasts 9.4 - I have learned to trust most Prince titles now, generally speaking there is great care taken to preserve the fidelity, to obtain master sources, and to package appropriately. That seems only fitting when dealing with an artists’ of Prince’s caliber…and I mean that most sincere. The list of contents for this title is extremely long and extensive and I did not write it up. I do have an image that I am willing to email if you need to see the track listing. It does show the contents in detail. My apologies, but trust me this is a great title and all the info is on the artwork.

Audience 8.8/9.3 - So, you know how huge the O2 Arena is, right? Well it sounds like a huge arena, but aside from the large mega stadium ambience, this is not that bad at all. It’s what you call “immersive” because you really can imagine yourself there. The audio quality itself is very good, as far as the tonality and levels, etc. The “live mix” is typical of an event like this, tons of atmosphere, party vibe (with about 15,000 of your closest friends), and Prince as always delivering the goods. The after show audio is extremely well done, sounding quite intimate and very warm. Audience 8.7 - This tape is surprisingly clear, it is not super dynamic but it is nice and clear. It’s almost like a REALLY good AM radio broadcast. Los Angeles 1975 - Soundboard 9.5 Offenburg 1977 Audience 8.9 - A very strong tape for sure. Clear, and pretty dynamic with great bass, and deep drums with guitars very tuneful and nicely placed in the overall mix. Lovely. Buffalo 1977 Audience 8.6 - The recording here is pretty clear, it definitely does lean towards the upper mid and highs but there thankfully is enough bottom to keep it from being irritating. Your ears do adjust quickly, and at some point you begin to notice it is actually very decent…think of it as maybe a superb AM radio broadcast (it isn’t, but it sounds like it could have been). Boston 1978 Audience 8.8 - It is apparent that very good gear recorded this show, the sound is warm and rounded, not a jagged, raucous tape like a lot of the amateur recordings can turn out to be. The live mix sound is good too, and the live mix is spot on. I think this tape offers a lot and you’ll probably give it multiple spins…especially after you hear Schenker just RIPPING on guitar. Studio Quality 9.6 - Make no mistake, as I once did, that just because this was the Stones entering the era of “disco” and experimentation, it is very much a bona fide Rolling Stones album and these sessions prove that they still jammed old school on every song. It’s an eye opener for me, when I hear the musicianship across a lot of songs I dismissed early on or never properly examined, I have new appreciation for the Emotional Rescue album and that period of the band. SDBRD/AUD Disc 1 SDBRD 9.2 excellent material that features some later (’78) performances but seems mostly to be 1974. Unfortunately the tapes were not adequately annotated. Disc 2 Audience 8.8 A very decent tape that has a great live energy to it. I almost prefer this over the board tape, it just captures more of the mania happening on stage at a SAHB concert. Disc 3 Audience 8.5 The recording seems to emanate from a more distant point from the stage and as such lacks the power and punch your ears crave, but it is not a muddy recording, you can hear the band well enough, just not much in the way of dynamics or power. Mahavishnu Orchestra Central Park 1972 Audience 8.6 - A somewhat percussive recording that has loads of middle band punch making for a sound that contains fierce kinetic energy. The performance is astounding, the recording adds an element of immediacy, with the drums especially sounding like they are placed right next to you. Very cool. Mahavishnu Orchestra Munchen 1972 Professional TV audio 9.3 - This is a nice one, and it is not suffering from TV compression although the “atmosphere” here is somewhat muted as if it was in a studio setting and not live in front of an audience. Soundboard 9.3 - OK, let me explain why the high rating here. Technically speaking, the actual audio quality is more like 8.8 to be honest…but this tape is so MUCH more than that and deserves a super high rating because of it. Let me explain: First of all, the audio is good enough to get excellent separation of instruments, that allows you to hear the detail of the guitar and drums, with a driving keyboard and clear vocals…and that is important because a certain new vocalist is hoping to impress in front of a London audience – and he does, they ALL do in a major way especially Blackmore. See, Richie is one of those guitarists that really goes for it, and sometimes it works and sometimes he is probably not inspired as much so it falls a little flat…not here! He’s simply brilliant and when I hear him like this I remember to include him on my all time greatest guitarists list ha ha! This rating is for the spectacular event this gig is, and how happy we should be to hear it clearly. Audience 8.7 - A good recording with what seems to be a little middle band compression but not too much. So, it’s smooth low end and louder upper middle and highs but softer middle band, that is not necessarily bad, it’s just lacking in that punch factor. It is though, as stated, a pretty decent recording. Oh, and the last song of the evening is “Don’t Fear The Reaper” so VERY cool to hear another live version of that. You know why BOC fans love the live recordings? Because with 5 guitar players at any given time, you just want to hear what they do with these amazing songs on stage. Audience 8.6 - Loud and noisy but every instrument heard…loudly. Here’s the thing – this is a complete show from 1975, for BOC fans, yeah it’s gotta be in your collection. It’s not terrible either, it’s just loud and thankfully not distorted but make sure you turn volume down before you press play ha ha! Blue Oyster Cult Tivolis Koncertsal Copenhagen, Denmark. Audience 8.4 - So, first the good news. This recording is much better than the Dublin ’83 show. Why is that significant? Because there are precious few live recordings of any kind of quality highlighting this short lived period with Gillan. I don’t know about you, but I think this material and the sound of the band during this time period is just awesome. I really would have loved more of this…but alas it was not meant to be. The downside is that the recording is mainly from Geezer’s side of the stage, so you are going to get an earful of Geezer, and that is not a deal breaker but what sucks is that Tony sounds weak in comparison. Another upside? You can hear Ian Gillan over the wall of sound, and therein lies the main reason why this tape deserves a listen. Will it get repeated plays? Probably not…but I was happy to be able to get another chance to hear Ian Gillan live with Black Sabbath and I am better for it. Black Sabbath Los Angeles 1980 Audience 8.9 - This is a much welcomed recording of perhaps the best post Ozzy era of Black Sabbath. 1980 was an interesting year, Ozzy making classic “solo” albums with his new band and Sabbath beginning a new era with a new singer in Ronnie James Dio and neither the worse for it. This is a great show, in great quality. Black Sabbath Vienna 1980 Audience 8.3 -Unfortunately this recording suffers from many ailments, mainly in the range and dynamics, but what it does offer is a previously uncirculated (and complete) show from Sabbath in Europe during the very crucial 1980 tour with Dio as new front man. This is what I get from this show- Dio is very committed to bringing the audience in to the spectacle…the performance is killer in every respect. The sound quality is not trash, but I want Dio more clear than this because he is really on his game this night. I think this tape belongs in this set because it doesn’t have to be the centerpiece of the set, it offers the collector a new tape of a complete show from 1980 and that is enough for me. Studio Quality 8.9 - The quality is great but you have to get past the first song and a half as there is some static present. KISS - "New York Academy Of Music - First Demo Tape 1973" Academy Of Music, New York Ciy, NY December 31st, 1973 KISS - 1st demo tape Electric Lady Studios, New York City, NY March 13th, 1973 Produced and engineered by Dave Wittman supervised by Eddie Kramer 01 Deuce 02 Strutter 03 Cold Gin 04 Watchin' You 05 Black Diamond Academy Of Music, New York Ciy, NY December 31st, 1973 06 Deuce 07 Cold Gin 08 Nothin' To Lose 09 Firehouse 10 Let Me Know 11 100,000 Years (rare live version) 12 Black Diamond 13 Goin' Blind (Howard Stern show) 14 Love Theme From KISS (1995 NYC KISS Konvention tour) 15 Mr. Speed (1995 NYC KISS Konvention tour) 16 Dirty Livin' (extended version 1979) Notes: On March 13, 1973, KISS recorded a low-budget five-song demo tape with producer Eddie Kramer. In October of 1973, Bill Aucoin, who had witnessed several KISS concerts during the summer months, approached the group to become their personal manager. KISS hired Aucoin, and subsequently inked a recording contract with Casablanca Records on November 1, 1973. KISS was the first act signed to Neil Bogart's new label. KISS began recording tracks for their debut LP at Bell Sound Studios in New York City during Autumn of '73. On December 31st, KISS performed at the Academy of Music in New York City, opening for Blue Öyster Cult and Iggy Pop, with the hyped New Years Eve gig billed as the band's official industry premiere. This has gone down in KISStory as the first time Gene would accidentally ignite his hair while breathing fire at the end of "Firehouse!" "Dirty Livin'" extended version wasn't very widely known at the time of release, possibly because it was only released in countries like Italy, Germany, France and Mexico. Soundboard 8.6 The board mix favors only one half of the band to the near exclusion of the others but does level out some as it progresses. In this presentation it certainly allows you to understand the contributions of Ace! The bonus material is all outstanding. This is worth picking up despite the strange board tape because it is extremely early Kiss and these kinds of tapes are very scarce.

Audience 8.4 - The quality of the audio is very good, being taped on what sounds like something better than a realistic recorder, but it is somewhat distant from the stage, and consequently a lack of sharpness. So, sound is good on your ears, but maybe sounds like what you would have heard if you were sitting in the upper deck at the Garden. That being said, Bowie is CLEARLY heard as are guitar leads, so it makes for an overall nice experience and worth grabbing. DAVID BOWIE Madison Square Garden New York, NY. Audience 8.7 - This is a “realistic” sounding tape, by that I don’t mean it sounds like it was recorded on a Realistic tape machine, rather it sounds like what your ears may have heard had you been at the show sitting towards the back of the hall. Is that bad? Not necessarily, because the tape sounds pleasing to the ears. Good, round, atmospheric…only flaw is the detail is missing. I can’t make out individual band members except the main gultars, bass, drums, and vocals. Other instruments come and go during the show as they get a spotlight on them, but I rate this show as very good because it’s so relaxing and pleasant overall and deserves a real deep dive into its contents. Audience 8.5 - What this tape represents is an almost uncanny time warp back in time, the sound that the taper captured is amazing – the mix and separation of instruments is what damages an otherwise exceptional sounding tape. With that being said, it’s got a lot to appreciate regardless of the actual music contained herein. For instance, once the soundman dials the mix in better, the music does sound MUCH better and guitar rises slightly higher up front making for a more enjoyable listening experience. The sound of this tape is good, with a punchy upper midrange but not uncomfortable, and roaring “low end” and I say that because while bass is not well defined, it certainly is present in the lower frequencies here. This tape will grow on you, and I promise once you start, and get past the first song (where the live mix is getting dialed in), you’ll find yourself more and more sucked in to it. Audience 8.2 - A loud and raucous tape, with a band of noise in the upper mid frequency that prevents better separation of instruments. Saving grace? Duane is the clearest instrument on this recording – in fact it is his guitar that soars over the sound to the degree that you almost inevitably focus solely on him throughout. As it happens, Gregg’s vocals are next up in the mix. Soundboard 8.9 - Kinda cool when you get these board tapes that pan a guitar, and then one other lead instrument to the other side, which in this case is keyboards. I think this allows for an examination of the instrument in question, so you might find yourself listening once and concentrating on guitar, then another time you’ll give drums and keys more attention…and that is why this show might have you coming back several times for more. Metropolitan Opera House NY 1970 Audience 8.4 - A decent tape considering we have very few US 1970 tour audience tapes that sound great. A little sweetening with EQ and you’ve just raised the sound rating another half a point…technology has changed the way collectors think about these old audience source tapes. I rather like it! San Francisco 1971 Audience 8.8 - This tape has some depth to it, where you get definition in the bass and not just “low end” which I appreciate. Roger rises above in the sound mix but on this tape nobody is drowned out, it’s evenly mixed and that makes it enjoyable. Some background noise which sounds like it is coming from the house PA but not during the band performing…all in all this is a real good one. Ultrasonic Studios 1969 Pro Studio 9.4 - Excellent stuff, I’d never heard this one before and I was pleasantly surprised to finally hear such pristine unofficial tracks by this great band. Tucson 1972 Audience 8.7 - A rambly, jambly sounding tape that allows you to hear every instrument with emphasis on drums, vocals and keyboards believe it or not…in such a way that sucks you right into it almost as if it were at a revival meeting. Yes, there’s a tiny amount of overload here (understandable) but I gotta tell you, this is a very, very exciting recording. Memphis 1972 Soundboard 9.7 - Scintillating stuff! Razor sharp guitar, pounding drums, and beautiful bass all interwoven and mixed for maximum clarity and separation of instruments. They were smart to allow some bleed from the audience to give this tape plenty of electric live atmosphere. SUPERB! Lakeland 1980 Soundboard 9.3 - So it’s the early 1980’s and I have to be honest but I would not have given Prince a chance. But, listening to these recordings today I hear real drums, crunchy guitars with an almost psychedelic tone, and confident rhythm section all belting out some decent funk and pop (although I don’t quite hear the precedent to superstardom). Interesting in hindsight. Columbia 1980 Soundboard 9.3 - Early period Prince already showing so much confidence on the live stage. Excellent sound!
