Delaware 1985 Soundboard 9.3 Nice to hear this period of Trower with a good, punchy board tape that does present a minimal amount of hiss (evident between songs) but other than that not much to complain about. W. Hollywood 1990 Soundboard 9.2 Technically speaking this would rate much higher as it is what one would call a “pristine” board tape. Yes it sounds crystal clear and Robin is literally singing in your ear (a bit much perhaps), but the rating reflects what I personally consider to be a downside of board tapes…the lack of atmosphere and reliance on perfect mix. This was probably mixed for the benefit of what was coming from the stage and not for the sake of the recording being made. It’s a reference tape is what it is. Contrast this to the next show in the set and you’ll begin to understand why I always say a great audience tape beats a board tape. Karlsruhe 2009 Audience 9.5 This show gets a stellar rating because while it is not technically a superior recording (mainly due to the very slight amount of overdrive) it represents most of what I love about great audience recordings. This recording captures the lightning into a bottle so to speak. The fact that there is just a slight bit of overdriven energy (for lack of a more technical term) or lets call it “saturation” for the sake of the audiophiles out there – either way the point is that this recording will get more repeat plays than the board tapes in this set. Audience 9.6 - A beautiful, lush and atmospheric document. I love the stereo separation here, it’s a sound field that envelopes you in a way that makes you feel you are sitting in the first row staring up at the band. This is a must have without question! Audience 9.0 - This is one of those recordings that really grows on you. You kind of have to adjust a little, especially through the first couple of songs. Taper begins to slowly sort of find the spot, and the recording gets better, a good mix actually although I wasn’t crazy about Tony’s guitar tone around this time…and it’s only Tony who is still original Sabs but his crew is highly competent (not crazy about the big rock stadium mannerisms of Tony Martin). I like the vocals of Martin, don’t get me wrong, but the between song banter is a little over the top. Listen to this without bias, it’s not Sabbath but it’s a great fucking band with Tony Iommi on guitar. Audience 8.8 - A wide open and bright recording that highlights the fact that you are in a big venue. The show has that huge feel to it, the vocals sort of slightly echo off the walls (not in a bad way), and the P.A. system pushing out a massive wall of sound…not pinpoint accurate but it gets the job done. Boston 1981 FM Broadcast 9.0 This is not bad, I detected maybe a little trace of signal interference but not enough to destroy this audio. It may be kind of like a background “fuzziness” or something but I find this to be a very good representation especially being a crowd that knows the music and the band very well. I think the band responds and delivers an exceptional performance. San Francisco 1981 FM Broadcast 9.4 Very strong in every category, a recording with depth and a band that delivers the goods. London 1981 Audience 8.8 A decent tape with maybe a little “crunchiness” to it but overall it rates well and can be thoroughly enjoyed. Audience 9.0 - So you have to deal with the annoyance of the beginnings of almost all of the songs missing as, I assume, taper was trying to preserve tape. I think it’s a reasonable trade off to have this quality recording over the old source which was borderline unlistenable…but complete. I’d rather have this! This is well worth hearing. Soundboard 9.4 - This is great, not only a very good, strong and clear board tape but also a superb performance by everyone. There is one small caveat here, starting at Bambele and extending through 5 more songs there is the presence of tape hiss (not too bad during the songs but very noticeable when quiet) which was probably the result of the engineer using a tape brand different to whatever he used for the rest of the show which has no tape hiss at all. NEW SOURCE Audience 8.7 This is a major upgrade to the previous version (see old review below for comparison) and as such we felt that it had to be offered here as a replacement. If you purchased the previous version (the artwork is untouched, only the music has been replaced in this set) than you are entitled to receive replacement discs without charge (pay postage cost only). Just reach out to us and we will take it from there. If you have never bought this title, than consider this one worthy of the collection. I will offer this caveat though - it is a recording that still shows its share of shortcomings, such as maybe a touch of overload during more bombastic passages (not nearly as bad as previous!), and the last track is incomplete (better an incomplete but listenable track than a totally un-listenable mess). OLD SOURCE Audience 7.2 This one is rather mediocre, although it is not “unlistenable” at all, but compared to other 1977 recordings it is what I would classify as “for completists only”. That being said, I can point out a few moments of this concert that I found interesting in a lot of ways. Like, during Pigs On The Wing Pt.1 you hear large explosions from the audience (possibly fireworks or maybe PA problem?) and you immediately think of Roger and how he’s probably disgusted with the whole thing by this time. Audience 8.6 - A tape that has gone through extensive rehabilitation and is now something I can recommend to fans. First off, you no longer have a low volume, crowded tape – this new re-master has the sound panned wider which allowed the muddier channel to be dealt with properly…all the work has paid off because, quite frankly, any 70’s-‘80’s Priest tape needs to be considered as historically valuable, right up to around 1986 IMHO. Audience 8.7 - Do not be put off by the rating! This is a very strong 8.7 verging closer to 8.8. Why do I stress that? Because it has a lot going for it, the only black mark I hold against it is due to the lack of distinction between guitars and Paul being pushed back in the sound mix. That being said, it’s more the “mix” of the guitars that leads me to say that, not that you can’t pick each one up. I think I am just being picky though. Soundboard 9.4 - A nice, low gen board from what I consider the apex of this band. In fact I would say my favorite live Santana originates from the Lotus era. I will say this mix does highlight percussion in a way that you hear cymbals and other instruments in a different aural space, almost in stereo as they seem to phase across the speakers and sometimes may even give you the feeling you are hearing tape hiss but alas it is actually residual crash cymbal sounds and maracas. Interesting. Audience 9.4 - Outstanding tape that has a full, rich bottom end that comes close to overshadowing the rest of the band but does not…but the fact that it is so insistent in the mix gives you that feeling like you are standing close to the mains and literally feel the bass and drums going right through you. That is what gives this recording an amazing live feel, because it literally places you right there and when you crank this you relive this event. This date is NOT the same show as the other Cologne '79 (Rockpalast) listed here. This is November 4th, 1979 so if you bought the other Cologne '79 this is not that and this is equal if not better in some ways than the Rockpalast gig. Audience 9.3 - A beautiful wide, spacious, and clear recording of a band absolutely demolishing it. How much friggin’ better do you want it? I’ve heard major label released live albums that didn’t sound as good as this.

Soundboard 8.8 - Not your typical board tape here, in fact I hesitate to even call it one because to me it sounds like a stage recording. Either way, it is decent but not great. What is great, however, is this period of the band and this performance is indicative of that peak they attained. Marvelous playing throughout – and like I said the sound quality is decent and enjoyable but I expected more from a professional recording.

Soundboard 9.2 - What I like most about this board tape is that it emphasizes Bill Wyman, and I mean where you can hear individual notes that he is playing, while also laying down a strong, sonically speaking, low end (so it’s not just bass notes being plucked out). This is a new, and good way to listen to another ’81 Tour board tape without being bored…’cause we all know the set list didn’t change at all.

Dallas 1981 Pro Radio 8.9 - Sounds maybe a gen or two down (but no tape hiss) or perhaps just the age of the tape this was recorded on as it was presumably tapes off the air. Still, it’s very good and I am sure with some EQ touches could really bring more of the highs out.

I found it interesting to hear the early takes because on some of the tracks it really shows less of the Southern influence and more of the psychedelic influence (listen to their cover of Evil Ways). Audience 9.4 - A tape that is almost TOO good…and by that I mean it has captured with sonic clarity the exact sound coming from the P.A. – which in this case was a P.A. that had some really pumping upper mid’s and high range frequencies! No wonder people often leave home from a concert with a ringing in their ears…for weeks! This show would have had me moving farther back to be honest. That being said it is just my own preference for sound – but the casual listener will find this recording damagingly good. It sounds like a hybrid where some of it is a direct feed and some of it is mic’d up. Detroit 1973 Audience 8.4 - A somewhat average but clear enough tape that has some sort of wobbling effect during at least the beginning portion but evens out thereafter. I think this may not be complete when compared to any other performance during the tour – including the one that is paired in this set. San Bernadino 1974 - Audience 8.6 Keith Emerson and vocals clearly stand out in this recording, while drums and bass seem to not be as distinct. There is a small amount of tape hiss indicating the age of this tape, but I won’t slag this one off because it isn’t that bad at all. Audience 8.9 - Very clear recording, the kind where you know you are hearing exactly what your ears would be hearing at this place and time. The highs are nice here too, the crystalline “tink” of the ride cymbals even coming through with clarity. The mid range is well represented, the guitar and bass though do sound indistinct for all practical purposes so don’t expect detail on the bass notes. It’s a stadium after all. Soundboard 8.7 - The only flaw with this tape is that it features a typical video compression type sound but the mastering job mitigated a lot of that so that the sound does breathe a bit more. It’s still very good, a little rough maybe but I take it and I am happy with it especially if nothing else because all instruments are present, the bass work is surprisingly defined in this mix…I can actually hear individual notes being played and my goodness Michael Anthony was a boss! The high frequency range is well represented but at times when the horns hit higher notes it gets a little screechy. The atmosphere is a touch bouncy and live, mid and low frequencies are present but not powerful. Overall it’s not bad, but it isn’t going to set the world on fire. The BBC material is a vast improvement from the ’77 stuff as it is a pro recording and broadcast. Audience 9.1 - I am always surprised when I hear such good recordings from this time period and then I remember that mics and P.A.’s and acoustics were all relative to the capture in that if the combinations were good, the result would also be good. This recording presents excellent separation of instruments with great live sound mix of the instruments, so much so that Free convinces you they could have soldiered on as a stadium act rather than dismantle and reform as Bad Company. Either way, I’ll enjoy what we have left of this venerable band in the form of live tapes like this. Soundboard 9.4 - All but the Darmstadt 1981 are soundboards of excellent quality. The one and only audience tape is very good though, recorded very up close with all the low end power as evidence that this band shook your bones (I know, I saw them in 1980 and I am still deaf!). Because it is recorded what seems like dead center, you aren’t going to hear the guitars and vocals as distinctly as the drums (super sounding kick by the way) and bass (pumping!). I like the audience tape here as it is kind of a relief to have a chance to be in the pit with the fans and hear what you would have heard had you been there, and I am not knocking the board tapes they are well done. Audience 9.2 - This is a really decent recording, it does sort of lean towards an upper mid range emphasis but not to the tape’s detriment, it’s just that is where most of the action is. Vocals are incredibly present and up front here, so this recording has an immediate impact when you listen and it captivates you all the way through to the end. FM Radio Broadcast 8.9 - This is not a typical radio broadcast, it is very raw and in-your-face loud! That makes it much more enjoyable to me. The kick drum and bass are nicely present in this mix – but are not boomy or obnoxious so this is a great way to hear instrumentation normally not very defined. Maybe I would say it could use more bottom end but I am nitpicking, it’s got all the essential things a listener needs to be able to “relax” when listening. You don’t have to strain to hear everyone on stage but mix-wise I would place bass and drums more to the back, relatively speaking, on this tape. Studio Quality 9.3 - Very slight hiss but otherwise super-duper. Definitely this is fly-on-the-wall type stuff, with banter intact. Very insightful, and kind of gives me more of an appreciation for an overlooked album.
